I wonder what Dman the Avs would target... I always thought Savard would be an Av, because I thought the Right Side would be our weak side, but honestly Malinski has been pretty solid, and the Left side feels like the weaker area now.

Also kind of wonder what quality of Dman they'd get... In theory they only need a #5 sort but if CMac is still this serious about winning, we have the assets to go get a Top 4 guy still if they really wanted to and were willing to put Ritchie or Goulash on the table.

I’ve started banging the drum for Oleksiak. He was effective for Seattle in that series a couple of years ago. That Seattle team had a similar playing style to the Avs too. 4.6, early thirties but his game might age well. The Avs could use another bigger body. If they could get some retention, that would also be nice.

Rantanen should not be paid a cent more than MacKinnon I don't care the cap is higher than when MacKinnon signed his deal.
Healthy Landy would still make what like 7mil a year... You gonna let Makar also walk when his contract ask will be higher that Macks. Thats just how it works.

You pay Rants and deal with it later like Vegas. You dont Trade him away now to make your team worse scoring wise. That should be automatic firing of Cmac.

For the people who think Rantanen is so replaceable can you find me a player who will replace his 48 goal pace? Find me even two players who we would realistically trade for that can replace what Rantanen does?

I don’t get the hate in here. He’s a top 5 player in the LEAGUE and guys are ready to ship him out for futures.

It's cost, simple as that. Do you want him for 8 years at 13mil or do you want something like 2 Mittelstadt. There's no right answer anymore since Rants hasnt been as much of a play driver of late.

There absolutely is a right answer.

It blows my mind how people think we would be better off with two slightly above league average players like Mittlestadt than an elite top 5 player.

He’s not a play driver? How is a guy who is 4 points behind Mackinnon for the league league and one point behind 2nd place NOT a play driver?

These broad terms in here that everyone throws around about Rantanen are just nonsense. Play driver, floater, no effort, falls down. It’s absurd. Every single GM in the league would be lining up to acquire him if he was made available. Which he won’t be because players of his calibre are NEVER made available. Unless he pulls a Tkachuk and says he won’t resign Rantanen is not going anywhere.

He’s an elite player. He’s not replaceable and we won’t win many games without him. Plain and simple.

Ok so we've already established that 2 Mittelstadts is not enough for you but I'm interested to know your number. How many Mittelstadts would it take for you to consider trading Rants?

He's not worth 14 mil. Two 24 goal scorers making 7 mil ? I'll start with Koneckny

I like Rantanen, and want to see him stay with the team.

That said, the Avs may just be up against the wall on this thing, and he may simply be too expensive, hence, he'll walk. Kind of analagous to the Soto-Yankees situation. The price just went up so high, they did their best, couldn't make it work, and are now off to doing something else.

If Rantanen is going to cost north of $14M......for that money, the team could sign a legit starting goaltender for multiple years, replace Rantanen with a good 25/30 goal guy on the wing, and perhaps even grab a nice depth piece - for similar money.

Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Drouin, and some 25 goal guy is still a nice set of top 4 wings.

They can't have everything.

Sigh

How many times does it has to be said, that the price for Colorado is not 14, it's something in the 12s. When the agent says they believe they could get 14M, that's on the UFA market with only 7 years. With the 8th year of the Avs, that equals 12.25M. This is just the way the contracts in the NHL work.

From what I've gathered from different insiders on podcasts and whatnot over the last 2 months, Rantanen is basically asking for something in the MacKinnon range. Not necessarely above him, but probably like 11.5 to 12.5. And the Avs have not even been willing to go to 11M. That's the holdup.

I would love to hear everyone’s plan to hear how they plan to replace Mikko. Everyone says we could utilize that extra cap space so much more effectively, but you never see any good plans that actual replace Mikko.

McDavid
MacKinnon
Makar
Draisaitl
Kucherov

Rantanen is a top five winger and a top ten forward though, easily.

How is Draisaitl better? Kucherov? Sure. But not by much.

Regardless, there are 3 clear top tier guys in McDavid, Mackinnon and Makar then a few elite guys that are all pretty similar in Draisaitl, Rantanen, Kucherov, Pasternak, Point, Matthews.

Simply put there are very few guys in the league in that top tier group and they cannot be replaced.

Let’s say we get offered a package of two 6 mil guys like Konecky and Mittlestadt, a 1st and a prospect we won’t be as good of a team because there are very few guys who can do what Rantanen does.

I just don’t get why guys who supposedly watch him play want to ship him out

I'm not a huge fan of Leon Neon but I think he's better than Rants, especially since he can play both center and wing.

Regardless, I agree, you get rid of the best winger on the team you'd better damn well have something good to replace him. I just don't see a scenario where the Avs are able to swing a deal that accomplishes that. Even in some weird fantasy scenario where he gets shipped to, say, Buffalo for Peterka and Quinn, that still feels like a downgrade.

So you get what. 2x40points guys who are passers and not goal scorers, 1 magic bean which might be in roster in 4 years since you cant instantly trade for a player since no cap.

Like I said, you pay him the 12,5mil and when the cap will go up, you still got the 50 goal scorer. If the cap goes up 10+ mil in 3-4 years that contract will be bargain.

Didnt Mikko play center in that god awful injury year when Avs lost to Seattle in playoffs?

When he's on, and consistent he is. When he isn't he's floating around the 30ish best player.
Well that goes to every player. Just look at Mack the last 10 games before last night.
