I think it’s just frustration from all the dumb and lazy things he does, and it’s not going to change at this point- he is going to always be like this. He makes up for it in points and those are necessary for winning games, but he’s just one of those players where you yell at the screen half the time he’s on the ice and then he makes you forget with a snipe or a nice pass.
This. Moose benefits from the players around him.

First goal last night Lehkonen gets the puck in the neutral zone, skates all the way behind the Pens goal and finds Makar. Cale slips a subtle yet top shelf pas over to Mikko who gets lucky and bounces the puck over Jerry's leg. Sure, Moose gets the goal but Lehkonen made it happen through his hard work. When was the last time Rants had the puck on his stick for 20 seconds?

Second goal last night is one of those plays he'll make where for 3 seconds he looks like the best RW in the NHL. Gets a savvy pass from DeHaan (who seems to be better of late) and snipes it past Jarry (who was not holding his post).

Third goal was an empty netter because Nate got him the puck to get the hatty.

12 mil? 13 mil? 14 mil?

For that money I'd take another Lehkonen, a player that has skills and works hard on every shift + a good D-Man (Manson replacement). And we'd have money left over to put towards resigning Blackwood after he wins the Cup.

not a trade proposal but more on the discussion of having rants vs depth.

I'd rather the combined salaries and players of Cirelli + Hagel on this time vs just 1 rantanen and his new 2025 salary

Vegas and Florida and even Dallas' success of late shows u dont need a winger like Rants to win a cup

drouin - mack - nuke
hagel - mitts - cirelli
lehks - colton - LOC

wow

Youre missing the point that those goals propably doesnt happen without him and Avs would barely win the game against bad Pens team. Now its a blowout. Also he did make a great pass to Lehky on the slot.

Yes you can have 4 great engines like Lehke but you aint getting all the goals which I still think matters in this game.

So pick your poison.

Here's the thing, Rantanen is a huge part of this team's offense, and his production will be hard to replace.

However, we won the Cup with depth, and Rants making more than 12M puts a stranglehold on that. So it's quite the dilemma
Next season will be tough for the Avs as far as the cap goes, but the following year, the cap is projected to be close to 100 mill, so we should be fine

Is this really from numerous insiders, or its more from you ? Honest question. Because I never heard that the Avs were offering less than $11M... That's very low based on reasonable comparables, so it would be very surprising. bordering impossible... Anything below $12M would be viewed as a bargain. Something starting with a $10M would be quite baffling... Just like something in excess of $14M would be.
It's not from me, but Nick Kypreos, who has proven to have sources around the league. He doesn't spew around much thsese days, but usually what he tends to say is accurate.

I'm not going to find the exact quote, but around a month ago he basically said that the number the Rantanen camp is asking is something along the lines of 11.8-12.4, and the Avs have had no interest in going anywhere near that. The front office/ownership don't see him as important as MacKinnon, and thus don't want to pay him that close to what MacKinnon makes.

I don't think anyone knows the right approach with Rantanen. Personally I view it in a few ways:

1. Assuming he signs for more than Mack - Keep him, management really needs to make sure they stack the deck to push hard for the cup at the TDL. This is likely the last real shot at a cup due to depth in the coming years. I just don't see how they afford it.

2. Assuming he won't sign, but Avs keep him for the PO's - Keep him, stack the deck at the Deadline. No assets coming back, so hopefully some depth can come in to backfill. Likely also the last shot at the cup in this window. But some cap room for goaltending and the rest of the roster.

3. Avalanche move him this season - The value I see here is you can bring in top 6 talent, gain some picks, prospects and other pieces that help offset the loss of scoring. Depth takes a hit this season, but likely keeps the team competitive for longer with more depth.

At this point i'd say gun it for the cup. In the offseason or last year I would've moved him to make more room for more depth and extend the window. It's hard to apply once you're into the last year of the contract.

Best case scenario would be sign him now for 8 years and trade him next summer.

New team gets an 8 year contract (they wouldn't get it otherwise) and Avs get their last shot with Rants + they can enjoy the cap space and a nice return for the next season.

Not happening but still the best case scenario. Then they can sign Makar for 15M X 8 in 2 years.

I think Rants is gonna walk this summer.

Sakic and CMac want him to take a team friendly deal like Landy and Toews did, but he wants to cash out.

Ofcourse I dont know Mikko but who wants to leave a team in cup window? With guys youve been playing your whole nhl career. If it comes to 1mil here or there he signs. If the office lowballs him too much then fire cmac.

Trade him to Van for Miller.
Vancouver doesn't make that deal without some sort of assurance that they can sign him. They're not trading Miller for a 'hope' that maybe they can re-sign Rantanen before he becomes a UFA.

So why doesnt Malkin want to leave? Also why none of the Tampa guys wanted to leave. They won twice. Also Marchant and the guys are still in Boston.

Its like you think that they wont be friends after multiple years playing together. Why would they want to leave? I cant think any other reason that being forced by management or opportunism to gain something.

Yeah, they would have to know if Rants will sign with them for sure.
