These GMs never learn. Paying these young defensemen $8+mil long term is just so unnecessary. Even if he plays like a 1D for the next couple of seasons, you pay him about the same, maybe a bit more. Taking a huge risk to save $1-2mil a year? Silly.

Sens did it with Chabot, and Oilers did it with Nurse.

It's not just the savings, it's also preventing them to go elsewhere... Especially for a team like Columbus.

It’s just the trend now. Locking up young guys early to try and get a discount. And with most of the guys getting it, it makes sense because their contention lives and dies by these guys.

It would be close to $3-6 mil more in a few years with the cap going up and comparables.

Yeah but we did that with Girard, and it ended up being a (mostly) fair price for him. The level of play for whatever Girard makes being fair is a lot different than 8.5 for 8 years.

I mean Faber had significantly higher upside than Girard had/has.

Makar got $500k more and was a point per game defenseman.
Makars was 2% more of the cap than Fabers will be though.

Idk I don’t really see the issue in locking him up long term. He put up 47pts and is capable of playing all situations at a pretty high level.

Bought 1 UFA year (Makar) vs 4 UFA years (Faber). This shit matters a lot.

Plus the cap is significantly higher now than back then.
