It would probably take a 3rd party who would want Rantanen as an exchange. The money has to work somehow. And Pittsburgh has zero interest in a rental like Rantanen, they would want picks and prospects.

Pittsburgh has zero interest on that deal. If they were ever to trade Crosby, it would be a full teardown. Picks and prospects.
If Crosby said he wanted a trade to the Avs, I doubt we'd have to give up much at all. My bet is the Pens would "Make it work" for Crosby. But I'm sure we'll still be paying a 1st.

IF, and that's a HUGE IF, Crosby asked for a trade, I can guarantee you that he will go where he wants to and Pittsburg will make it work for him.
I just have a very, very hard time seeing Crosby pulling a different jersey over his head. The only caveat to that is if he wants to play beyond the two years he's got left. If he's thinking he's got an additional two to four years after that, then maybeish I could see him wanting to go somewhere more competitive.
