Whether you think DeBrusk should have been extended or not is beside the point. The main issue is that they let him walk and did nothing to address the hole on their top 6. Instead they spent that money on a defenseman we didn't need.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm happy with strategy. I know they assumed adding Lindholm would address the offense issue, but clearly more was needed and still is.

I'm just saying that Jake going on a hot streak is nothing new. Five goals in five games at $5.5M seems great. But it also comes with stretches of no goals in many games with no passion or pulse. Part of the package with young Jake.

If I knew why I'd have fixed it and Jake would still be a Bruin -- maybe the one of most beloved.

The Bruins did add a top 6 player in Lindholm.

They also had Geekie (17-22-39) and Freddy (18-22-40) to step up into the top 6. Jake (19-21-40) had virtually the same production playing more minutes with better players.

So far Geekie and Freddy are not producing so it isn't working out. But at the time it made no sense to sign Debrusk for over twice as much as two guys who had the same numbers and could play the same position.

And how can you say they didn't need a defenseman? They lost Grzelcyk and Forbort and Shattenkirk.

The Bruins took a mid-level offensive roster that couldn't score in the playoffs and swapped a 40pt winger (DeBrusk) with a 44pt center (Lindholm) +$3mil. Both coming off of down years. We also let Heinen and his 36pts walk out the door as well. We trusted Geekie and Freddy to fill the winger void and it hasn't worked. Fair enough. But did we really expect to be better offensively than last year?

As for defensemen, you could have brought all 3 back for less than what you are paying Zadorov. Not saying I would, but come on. Nobody had a gun to their head. We were the 5th best defensive team in the league last year.

Zadorov is basically a bigger, slower, dumber version of Connor Clifton......who we also could have re-signed for less money.

Come on, no one was suggesting that after last season. And last season the goaltending was much better.

I think management did feel they would be better offensively this season. But the terrible starts for Pasta, McAvoy and Marchand have had more to do with the lack of offense than losing Debrusk.

The Rangers are kind of in the midst of a meltdown after getting their lunch handed to them by Jersey last night;

Jack Hughes tried to do a Forsberg to beat Shesterkin late in the game, leading MSG analyst Steven Valiquette to cope at levels not seen before by calling the move disrespectful and "instagram hockey." Which is interesting given it's been a thing for a little over 30 years.

In his last 9 starts, Igor Shesterkin is 2-7-0 with a .882 SV% and a 3.93 GAA. Safe to assume he's probably regretting turning down that extension at this moment. Vincent Trocheck also had some big "calling guys out without calling them out by name" energy in the postgame availability;

All of this is being pointed back at peter laviolette as rumors are flying they might look to fire him. If they can him and hire another guy, that would be the rangers 4th head coach since 2021. At that point it you should probably start looking at your core guys, specifically leadership.

I think Ranger management might be looking at the core given the persistent rumors about potential trades & trade partners. Where there's smoke, there's fire. They'll probably can Laviolette first though, that is how it usually works. Not a good look going through 4 coaches in 3 years but it is easier to hire/fire 1 guy than make trades.

I don't know WTH is up with Sheshterkin. Yes it's harder to make stops when your defense isn't doing its job but he's just been awful. Maybe the contract situation has gotten to him. :dunno:

Rags management has to be happy they didn't get a deal for $10m + with him. Maybe Swayman (who I think will still be a great goalie post-contract when all is said and done) is the most recent cautionary tale about paying a keeper too much.

Four nations rosters starting to come out. Sweden is the first with imo a surprising Bruins name on it.

GOALIES

Filip Gustavsson, Minnesota Wild
Jacob Markström, New Jersey Devils
Linus Ullmark, Ottawa Senators

DEFENSEMEN

Rasmus Dahlin, Buffalo Sabres
Rasmus Andersson, Calgary Flames
Mattias Ekholm, Edmonton Oilers
Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning
Gustav Forsling, Florida Panther
Erik Karlsson, Pittsburgh Penguins
Jonas Brodin, Minnesota Wild

FORWARDS

Adrian Kempe, Los Angeles Kings
William Karlsson, Vegas Golden Knights
Joel Eriksson Ek, Minnesota Wild
Gustav Nyquist, Nashville Predators
Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks
Lucas Raymond, Detroit Red Wings
Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers
Leo Carlsson, Anaheim Ducks
Elias Lindholm, Boston Bruins
Viktor Arvidsson, Edmonton Oilers
Filip Forsberg, Nashville Predators
Jesper Bratt, New Jersey Devils
William Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs

Kinda shocked Lindholm made it over a guy like Eklund
