Whether you think DeBrusk should have been extended or not is beside the point. The main issue is that they let him walk and did nothing to address the hole on their top 6. Instead they spent that money on a defenseman we didn't need.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm happy with strategy. I know they assumed adding Lindholm would address the offense issue, but clearly more was needed and still is.

I'm just saying that Jake going on a hot streak is nothing new. Five goals in five games at $5.5M seems great. But it also comes with stretches of no goals in many games with no passion or pulse. Part of the package with young Jake.

If I knew why I'd have fixed it and Jake would still be a Bruin -- maybe the one of most beloved.

The Bruins did add a top 6 player in Lindholm.

They also had Geekie (17-22-39) and Freddy (18-22-40) to step up into the top 6. Jake (19-21-40) had virtually the same production playing more minutes with better players.

So far Geekie and Freddy are not producing so it isn't working out. But at the time it made no sense to sign Debrusk for over twice as much as two guys who had the same numbers and could play the same position.

And how can you say they didn't need a defenseman? They lost Grzelcyk and Forbort and Shattenkirk.

The Bruins took a mid-level offensive roster that couldn't score in the playoffs and swapped a 40pt winger (DeBrusk) with a 44pt center (Lindholm) +$3mil. Both coming off of down years. We also let Heinen and his 36pts walk out the door as well. We trusted Geekie and Freddy to fill the winger void and it hasn't worked. Fair enough. But did we really expect to be better offensively than last year?

As for defensemen, you could have brought all 3 back for less than what you are paying Zadorov. Not saying I would, but come on. Nobody had a gun to their head. We were the 5th best defensive team in the league last year.

Zadorov is basically a bigger, slower, dumber version of Connor Clifton......who we also could have re-signed for less money.

Come on, no one was suggesting that after last season. And last season the goaltending was much better.

I think management did feel they would be better offensively this season. But the terrible starts for Pasta, McAvoy and Marchand have had more to do with the lack of offense than losing Debrusk.
