“Be the best version of yourself,” said Kinnear. “Too many times I find as coaches we try to instill Xs and Os, and then you lose what the player is about. We want to see their identity. They have to fit into what we’re trying to do, but I want to see the best version of them and we’ll work on the systems as we move forward. I want them to show what they’re about.”
great quote. best thing i've heard from kinnear.

After this weekend's ncaa games, man Minnesota State has 3 UFA's that I really want. In order:

1. D Jake Livingstone- Just a great toolset , 6'4" 205, solid defensively, great offensively, can skate, plays aggressive, rh shot, is very defensive minded, I always find him in the right position. He's the only ncaa free agent D in the last few years that I think truly has nhl top 4 upside.

2. D Akito Hirose- Smooth, cerebral d, can do a little bit of everything, creative offensively, great wrist shot. He's not bad in his own zone either. He's the Maverick's pp1 qb.

3. G Dryden McKay- 5'11", but he's so good. Made a ton of unbelievable stops against Harvard. Best goalie in college hockey, holds the NCAA career shutouts record with 34. Very smart goalie, great instincts. I know it's unlikely we sign him because of his size, but we did draft Levi. My hunch is that Lu likes this kid.

Also, D Zach Metsa from Quinnipiac, Smilanic's teammate. Great offensive skills, good skater, solid defensively too. 5'9", but plays a smart game, I can see him potentially working around this limitation in the nhl. He's also a little thick. Panthers have seen him plenty, so they might have more of an inside track than most teams as Quinnipiac doesn't have many nhl prospects.

If we get any of those four, it'll make giving up all those picks easier to stomach.

Those are great prospects and would heal the picks-thing for sure…

I like Nick Blankenburg too, he should be on that list… Great RHD, skating is top-notch, puck handling too, leader, size is a concern and D only okay, but has room to grow and would be a great signing IMO.

And you have to add Ben Meyers to that list…

Pretty sure Zito is cooking on that college free-agents class, can’t wait to see what he is up to ! ;)

thing is, do we have room for any of these kids near-term?

there aren't a lot of spots open on next year's roster. don't know whether these kids are ready or expect to jump right to NHL next year. i'm sure a pathway to the show would be more appealing than joining a juggernaut.

Yeah, Blankenberg is #4 on my list for D. I do love how competitive and physical he is, but yeah his size scares me. I think even Benning is bigger than him. I like Livingstone, Hirose, and Metsa more, but I wouldnt be upset if we signed Blankenberg.

Yeah Meyers for sure will be one of the most coveted forwards, I just think D and G are a higher priority for us. Our forward group is fine IMO, especially for a contender. But again, if we sign Meyers I won't be upset. I also like Ford and Trivigno.

That's what worries me, but you never know, a couple of these kids might find a contender appealing for various reasons. Actually I do think there will be a F spot open for a prospect next season. I really want a D though.

would love to make a splash like last year with kiersted. we could use a freebie or two.

hey, will probably take my son to the frozen four in a couple of weeks. anybody other than the kids you mentioned and benning/sammie i should look out for?

Not really, Minnesota and Michigan's rosters are filled with already drafted guys. Maybe Minnesota goalie Justen Close, he's been pretty good since having to suddenly take over as the starter mid season. Although, he's 5'10". Also, I don't think anyone signs him this year as he's a junior, they probably want a larger sample size before handing out a contract.

Minnesota State F Brendan Furry is a possibility, he's been ppg this season. I don't see his nhl upside as all that high though.

Since my last Canadian Hockey League prospects update on March 15th:

Sourdif - 3g, 4gp
Nause - 7a,7gp
Haché - 1a, 1gp ( must have been injured, is back now.)
Guzda - 3gp, 2W, .949sv%, 1.67gaa

FYI, all players teams have already clinched a playoff spot. All teams have about half a month to go in the regular season.

Evan Nause is having a tremendous second half of the season. He had his first 2 goals game today and was named 2nd star in a 6-2 win.

He has 14 points in his last 14 games. He was -3 after the first half and he's +18 since then.
I think he had a shoulder injury. Fairly serious, kind of like Cam York.
Almost described as a shredded shoulder. Just takes time.

Between Benning, Ludvig, Nause, Kiersted, Uens, and Gildon, I have tempered hopes that we have "in house" replacements for the D we will eventually have to rely on in the next 1-2 years. We shall see.

Nause also on the Team of the week in the CHL

On the blue line, Florida Panthers prospect Evan Nause of the Quebec Remparts dazzled with five points counting two goals and a trio of assists coming in three appearances that included his first multi-goal game coming in Sunday’s 6-2 triumph over Sherbrooke. A 19-year-old native of White Rock, B.C., Nause has impressed in his second season with Quebec where through 52 appearances he sits tied for first in scoring among all defencemen with 35 points counting six goals and 29 assists.
