What a great little outlet pass by Simon. Turns back to go behind the net and just chips it to the winger. Poised. He just seems to do the little things so well.

Didn't love Nemec's first period, but he had a great second. Vilen is very very good.
That's curious, I actually slightly prefered his first! Pretty strong game overall from him, you can just see the poise and IQ.

Wouldn't be surprised if Nemec had over 30 minutes in this game. Seems like he's always on the ice (He had 9:51 after the 1st).

Simon with 17:24 of ice-time (leads the team with 3:22 (!) more minutes than the 2nd TOI leader) and leads Slovakia in shots with 4.

Slovakia makes it 4-2, but Slovakia's horrible goaltending strikes again, what a bad goal. 5-2 FIN.

#37 Kemmell played at total of 14:04.
1st: 2:43 2nd: 4:20 3rd: 6:21 OT:0:40

Turning to him in “break glass in case of need of goals” on makeshift lines or hope for something on PP (is he on the PP?) doesn’t seem like the best way to get something out of him.

I didn’t see the game but…

It says he was on the ice for the 1st Swiss goal against with 3 Forwards: #15 Hameenaho (TOI 6:47) and #18 Miettinen (TOI 14:15), #29 Huuhtanen (TOI 15:04)
and one Defensemen: #21 Heimosalmi (20:31)

I feel like I’m reading it wrong in some dumb way lol

How did that happen?

I think you just missed the fact that SUI penalty had just expired bit before their 1st goal. I think Kemell was on the 2nd PP unit, so thats probably why he was out there with weird combination.

I think that his PP usage was even more weird. How do you not have your best goal scorer and someone who lead the team in scoring in the summer tournament on your PP1? Thats just some doghouse kinda shit to me.

I'm not gonna pretend that I know how Kemell has played in Liiga cause I havent seen a single game of his this season as I follow Liiga very little, especially regular season. But I dont understand how (once again, on paper) arguably your best forward can be in the dog house when the tournament hasnt even started? Did he sleep with the coaches daughter?

Well he seems to be out of it this game and scored already but still no reason for the weird antics against Swiss.

Vilen with the goal line save. Meh. He has ways to go to get to Vats level.

By the time he hits the NHL, Luke Hughes will be a different player than he is now, just as he's a different player now than he was last year. Though he clearly displays the hockey IQ and ultra-elite athleticism to excel defensively, he's still learning the nuances of defending.

I'm not worried about Luke Hughes. You're talking about a kid with rare offensive upside, who has shown great improvements defensively, though he still has a way to go. Defense is a tough position, and we're talking about a kid who just missed the cutoff for the 2022 draft by a matter of days. It may take him until 2024-25 to carve a regular role on the NJ Devils blueline, but when he comes he'll be worth the price of admission
Seems like an awfully optimistic take on Hughes' game.

After a season and a half of college hockey and several international appearances both at the junior and men's level he should be far more positionally sound than he showed last night.

Whether it was over-confidence playing U20 against an inferior opponent or merely recklessness his consistent lack of attention to detail and wandering were disconcerting; especially for a player who is the team captain.

Nemec did? Is he ok? (I had to leave lol)
Yeah like @Captain3rdLine said, it was someone else. Cant remember who honestly. Was limping to the bench.

That kinda shit to me is the definition of "hockey players are tough" and very welcome honestly. Playing through injuries that might affect your after career life is just dumb and shouldnt be glorified anymore.

Completely agree with this. I was one of the biggest Luke Hughes supporters in his draft year and I still think he has special offensive traits and physical abilities that are beyond elite, especially his skating.

With that said, the mistakes he makes defensively go way beyond little nuances. He's straight up lazy defensively at times and 100% of his defensive mindset seems to be retrieving pucks so that he can start making plays offensively. It results in laziness along the wall in his own end, inattention to detail, poor positioning and turnovers. He just isn't committed enough defensively. This is a mindset thing more than an experience or coaching thing.

I've said this before, but Luke is going to be a player that does some unreal things offensively and fills up the highlight clips, but has some backbreaking defensive plays that will drive people crazy. The solution is probably that you need to pair him with a Siegenthaler type. I would still take him at #4 in that draft every single time.

Nemec played a game leading 26:50 (next Slovak 20:55)
Put up a game leading 5 shots
But was -3

Vilen led Finland in ice time with 26:27 (next finn 21:55)
Got a primary assist and was +1
Even though he was -3 today, I wouldn’t put any goals on him. I thought he had a very good game. Playing 6 minutes more than the 2nd SVK TOI leader is wild lol. Good start for him. Also had 5 shots.

Someday maybe we look back on this and see that they were destined to play on a pair for NJ.
