Kirk vs Moreno is a pretty interesting debate though.

FWAR

Moreno has a 3.48 FWAR/162.
Kirk has a 3.25 FWAR/162

Here is BWAR

Moreno - 4.48 bWAR/162
Kirk - 3.38 bWAR/162

Moreno also has more control and is more athletic so his body is less likely to break down over the long term. But Kirk is the better hitter to date.

The legitimately concerning thing with Kirk right now is the (huge) decline in his EV/power numbers.

If it was just an approach thing, you’d be confident he could find his old groove again at some point. But his approach and K/BB ratios are great. He’s doing the same things he’s always been doing … except he isn’t hitting the ball hard anymore and 2023 has turned into a slappy singles hitter.

Hopefully it turns around but I certainly have questions about whether his lack of fitness is limiting his explosiveness as he gets older.

Like, 95.0 EV 2020 (small sample) -> 92.3 EV 2021 -> 90.5 EV 2022 -> 86.0 EV 2023 is alarming.

I don't do anything based on a Rogers marketing plan. That would be foolish indeed.

Let's put it this way. False marketing is something Rogers has a reputation for. Not just in baseball.
Other than buying season tickets?

He looks fatter this year, which is asinine for a professional baseball player in 2023.

You've posted a tweet (from a random person) depicting another person (not Bass) that supposedly was shared by Bass (which we are led to believe because his Insta is in the top left corner in an easy to edit location.

Also, this is the GDT and has nothing to do with last game or next game.

Hot take, athleticism at catcher is fairly useless. Majority of the time these starting catchers play 120-135 games a year, and with the tolls of playing the position any player regardless of athleticism will break down faster than if they were playing at a different position. If you're athletic and the bat can play anywhere else, they'd probably move you so that they could get you into the lineup everyday. Realmuto being an anomaly (even in Rutschman's case they're DHing him on off days). Posey and Mauer are examples of wanting to keep the bat in the lineup and transitioning them to 1B. Lawrie and Harper being other examples of guys who were experimented in other positions to make use of their athleticism (speed, arm).

Kirk's plate discipline and power production to date has been vastly superior to what Moreno has shown and gives him that Yoshida/Arraez skill bump that makes him a very effective new era DH. Yes that negates a lot of his value if he were to be moved from C permanently, but that doesn't seem to be an intention for awhile.

Fair warning:

The Anthony Bass situation is a minefield that needs to be monitored by the mods carefully and shepherded with some degree of care.

To that end we can't be having it be an issue on two fronts and in light of that NO DISCUSSION OF ANTHONY BASS OUTSIDE OF HIS BASEBALL PERFORMANCE IN RELATION TO THE GAMES IN PROGRESS WILL BE ALLOWED IN HERE. If you want to talk about the off-field stuff it goes in the discussion thread. And if you choose to get involved in that discussion you also recognize that the mods reserve the right to remove or alter any posts as necessary to comply with site rules and conduct guidelines and you are expected to do your best to stay within those boundaries. If Bass' name is mentioned here it's going to be about his play or about him potentially or actually coming into a game. Anything else will be deleted.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY SUCH WARNING ON THIS MATTER. Everyone who posts from here on out is expected to abide by the rules and will be considered to have seen and understood this warning. Ignorance of it will not be a viable excuse for violating it. Posts that do violate these expectations will potentially be removed at the discretion of the moderators.

Keep the line moving.

Houser is getting kinda hosed tonight. He's doing what he does as a groundball pitcher but they're either finding holes or his defense just flubs it.

Cavan has been more aggressive at the plate. He’s made an adjustment
It would be nice if this could stick. I love Biggio's patience, but it's not worth much if he lets easily hittable pitches go by. It lets pitchers just pound the zone to get ahead... if he can start being aggressive early in the count, I think we'll see the walks come back, too.
