Bassitt isn't exactly a high velo guy to begin with so that drop in velocity is a tad concerning. He relies on groundballs and shitty contact in general.

Same thing that kicked off Ryu's steep decline and eventual surgery.

The pitch clock as well. Bassitt was notorious in New York for coming off the mound and shaking off his catcher.

That was supposed to be the point of him using Pitch Com to call his own pitches. Because with the clock in play he could stand there forever shaking off the sheer # of possible pitch calls the catcher could make given pitch and location. So instead here he can relay the info back because he already knows what he wants to do.

Whether that was in part responsible for distracting him or throwing the him/Jansen combo off I dunno but he definitely needs to sort things out a little bit provided the velocity issue isn't symptomatic of a bigger issue.

After the three-game series, he's my only concern. It's not just this game but his velocity was down in spring and he's moving to a hitters-friendly park.

The decision to spend an extra $38 million for a lateral move from Stripling to Bassitt remains … strange.
Bassitt has been a good pitcher the past 4 years. I don’t think Stripling had any intention of resigning here. How did Stripling pitch today?

Ive heard a couple predict 3rd in the AL East, which I thought was fair.
Never sleep on tampa. Their pitching is elite. They find ways to maufacture runs too. Then the yankees they are always near the top. Can definitely see the jays 3rd. But can see them 1st or 2nd too if they get hot. Cards are a really good team. Cant judge the team after that series.

People who can use their heads, for one.

No one is putting them ahead of the Astros and Dodgers of the world but they're absolutely in the mix and you're lying to yourself if you think they aren't.
They’re certainly a contender for playoff spot, which technically makes them a contender, but I haven’t heard anyone outside of TO predict them to win the AL or WS.

I don't sleep on the Red Sox, either, except for when they’re trying to lose.

LOL, love seeing people overreacting after a 1-2 series. If that was in the middle of the season when the Jays are like 50-28 or something, it would just be a blip on the radar screen. This team is top 5 team in baseball, if people are saying they are barely a playoff contender they are just trolling. Simple as that.

Who HAVE you heard making predictions?

ZiPS projections have the Jays winning the division with the second best record in the AL.

Of 27 staff members at Fangraphs, 19 picked them to win the division. Ten picked them to win the AL (second to Houston). Five picked them to win the WS (most in the AL, second to SD in the league).

A quick Google search shows:

CBS - 6 writers - 3 have them winning the division, 3 have them second to the Yankees. One has them winning the AL (4 HOU, 1 NYY... all picked the NL team to win the WS).

The Sporting News - projects Jays and NYY with the same record, with Jays, NYY, and HOU as the clear top three with virtually the same odds at an AL pennant.

ESPN and The Athletic are behind paywalls, so no idea.

Missed the game. Am I reading this right? Only one swinging strike for Bassitt? Hoping it's just one game where he didn't have his stuff at all. Won't get easier with the Angels next weekend, though.

The good news is that Berrios and Kikuchi will be facing a crappy KC offense. Take 3 of 4, please

I didn’t know Rogers can identify pitching talent. Is the CEO doing that?
Apparently they can’t identify decent management either….

His numbers have been in decline for 3 straight seasons.
junk ball pitchers rely on deception but eventually their scouting reports catch up to them and they become predictable and very hittable.

the pitching has a long way to go before they crack the top 10 in baseball.

if bassitt isn’t connecting with Jansen or Kirk then he could be in a funk for a while.

these finesse guys are sensitive as hell and must be simpatico with the catcher at all times.

Athletic:

45% have them winning the AL East, 13% higher than the 2nd most popular pick, the Yankees.

There don't appear to be specific league champions, just WS picks, in which case the Jays were picked by 16% of their writer pool, tied with Atlanta for #2 behind San Diego (19.4%)

Why you mad? It's a message board.

who said anything about being mad? I said I thought it was amusing. It's funny that people who are apparently so invested in the team as to be seemingly infuriated by the state of them after literally less than 2% of the season (for comparison this would be like melting down at the first intermission of the 2nd game of an NHL season) are nowhere to be seen the rest of the time. You're right that it's a message board. The point of which is conversation and engagement. So really how much engagement is there if it's only for the sake of performative histrionics when things go bad?

I'd be happy to have more people willing to engage in a sensible, conversational manner because that makes things more interesting. But this ain't it.

Bassit and Berrios will probably be fine for regular season. With the rule changes I'm thinking scoring will be significantly up this year and a 4-4.5 era could probably get it done as mid rotation guys. I'm more concerned about having a good enough #3 and #4 pitcher to go up against Houston, Tampa, NY etc in the playoffs if we can get their.

Just ignore them if you don’t like what they say. It’s an open forum.

I think Bassitt was that type who took his time pitching, maybe he still needs an adjustment period? That's quite a radical change for some pitchers.
