pronunciations....

Poitras -
Poy trus
Pwa twa (rangers announcer)

Merkulov

Merk a lov
Merk you lov (jack last night)

Any idea of what is correct?

I am also curious about Poitras' pronunciation. Those french names always trip me up because I want to pronounce them the french way but for example there are so many places in new england with french-looking spelling but pronounced the most anglo way you could imagine so you just never know

In russian, Merkulov would be pronouced approximately mer-KOO-lohv, you can almost always assume russian names have the emphasis on the 2nd syllable and that O is an OH sound instead of an AH or AW (Orlov would be or-LOHV) but he may go with a more standard anglo pronunciation.

Even he himself doesn't pronounce it properly. He pronounces it exactly as you would suspect someone who grew up in Ontario would.

I was curious and watched some clips and it looks like he goes with something like pot-ra, definitely no S at the end but also no real W sound or indication of the I in the first syllable either. I will take your word on that being Ontario pronunciation haha

Name pronunciation is so interesting to me. I have a coworker who speaks spanish as his first language and I think of his name with spanish pronunciation in my head but my cousin's husband who has the same name and also speaks spanish, I think of the anglo way because that's how I was first introduced to him.

It would be mer - K - ulof . A straight up "U" instead of "you" (ju) and you will sound Russian.
I cant help with Poitras - my french is bad.

Zayre's called, they want their "hockey equipment" back.
We used to play street hockey in the Zayre's parking lot on Sunday nights. Due to the Sunday Blue Laws at the time all the stores except the mom and pop stores had to be closed. The parking lot lights would come on at dark and 50 or so kids would show up and teams would be picked and the games would begin. The local cops would show up in their cruisers to watch us and the games. And every one bought these at Zayre's.

That‘s awesome.

I‘m a little younger than you, but for my early street hockey years a lot of us used those blades.

By the time I was 15 or so most of us used the sticks with the fiberglas blades.

And always orange street hockey balls…no matter the weather.

Lol.

Someone posted him saying his name as a reference and before I watched it I said to myself he gonna say it exactly like he ended up saying. In short the way an Anglo would say it.

Fwiw, Geekie and Boqvist are a year younger than Steen, a year older than Lauko (2yrs older than Beecher). They’re the same age as McLauglin and Swayman. So they’re as young as “the kids.”
Fair point. Would rather give some of the teams rookies the space. Just me though.

If you're from Quebec you say

Pooah-trasse (fairly sure they don't put a silent S on the end of that in Quebec, in France they might very well)

In Ontario an Anglo is saying

Pooah-tress (like fortress)

From his own mouth

Pot-trah

No S. Or twah. Or twas

Just Pot-truh.

Dont overthink it. :)

Debrusk. Zacha. Pasta
Marchy. Poitras Coyle
JVR Frederic Geekie
Looch. Beecher Lauko

Hey look at all the center depth we have where we can put Coyle on the wing. J/k, I actually like this take. Those are the top 12 forwards I'm circling in on if Poitras can continue to elevate.

Should get the roster for tomorrow's game vs. Philly at some point today. I expect Marchand and Looch to play since it is a home game. Hope to see Beecher and Poitras as well. Probably get a Linus/Sway split.

U do not pronounce the last letter. So it would be a silent s.

With their system emphasis on centers, I just can't see the team losing 3 of their 4 veteran centers (Bergeron, Krejci, Nosek), and placing the only remaining vet center (Coyle) on the wing.
