Since it seems the Ducks will likely finish bottom 5 this year, I figured we should have a thread for discussing the implications of where the f***s will finish in the standings. As well as what factors could affect where they finish.

Tonight was interesting as all bottom 5 teams earned 2 points sans the Ducks and the Hawks.

Hey Folks,

Want to clear some of the air here, Tank talk is not an issue, please talk tank to your heart’s content here, totally understand how critical it is for that Future Potential Top pick. The issue is posting in the GDT, like you want the team to lose or make posts that you are angry they are winning or won the game, or bashing the team for not tanking.

The main reason is, to respect your fellow members. The GDT is about discussion of the game on a live basis and then post game discussion and opinions. A lot of fans are not rooting for the team to lose, and everyone has their views and opinions towards tanking, and may not want to discuss tanking in the GDT

If you guys have any concerns, feel free to PM me or another mod, and would be happy to explain more in detail.

Thanks!

Leo

Henrique has become Verbeek’s Wizard of Oz moment…

“Oh Uncle Henry and Auntie Sue, if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I’ll look no further than my own back yard.”

John

Of course, many will say that Verbeek’s Wizard of Oz moment came when he played the Scarecrow traded Lindholm.

No one rational thinks that Bedard is all that's needed to turn this team into a contender. But if we're building out of the prospect pool, getting Bedard, which I'm not even banking on, would essentially translate to a free superstar that Verbeek doesn't have to trade a king's ransom for, or beat out 31 other teams' pitches in free agency.

Under a competent coach, this team's youth core will be competitive for sure once they're settled in and developed. The point is a freebie elite talent can only improve this team's outlook. Is it the end of the world if we don't end up getting one of these guys? No. But it's a frustrating outcome of a historically bad season.

i just want a top 4 pick but apparently even that's too much to ask from a historically terrible team

Is this the part of the season where we rationalize why we don't need a potentially generational talent? Really?
we're not getting bedard. i came to terms with that a long time ago

since that's not happening, getting the chance to pick one of fantilli, carlsson, or michkov would be awesome but now may very well not happen either

what if...

we pick Bedard who requires a max contract right out of the ELC, when we start to get good, and it ties our hands a bit for other potential good contracts, delaying the rebuild more

vs

we pick a lower-tier prospect that we are able to sign on a friendlier deal right out of the ELC but it's still a super good add to the lineup. But have money for better depth.

hypothetical, ofc.

missing out on all 4 of those guys would be heartbreaking, Smith and Benson will be great players but they're not going to be game-changing, franchise-altering players like the big 4

Bedard alone no matter how much he's paid isn't going to tie our hands at all so I'd go with situation A every day of the week, the only way we'd have our hands tied is if we started handing out big money contracts to a bunch of people who didn't deserve it, one generational talent making big bucks isn't going to change a thing negatively.

Even though I have no evidence to back this up, I’d recommend not getting hung up on those miracle points the Ducks earned throughout the year, as the Blackhawks/Jackets/Sharks etc surely all also have miracle points they earned for no reason as well.
Oh for sure. However, looking at our goal differential compared to the other bottom teams, I'm going to guess we picked up more "miracle points" than the others.

As an uneducated pleb, you take A and you figure it out, either by trading excess pieces to fill holes (my preference) or hope you can snag a Cup or two when the stars align (what TO and EDM are trying to do, apparently).

I'm still a bit worried about Bedards size and impact in the NHL especially in the playoffs, compared to his current hype.

I'd still take him #1 without thinking much, but part of me'd be as happy about #2 or even #3 pick. I know it's flawed thinking because injuries can happen to anyone and size alone doesn't automatically give you anything... I'm pretty sure I have daddy Getzlaf issues, lol. Wanting our leaders to be big players with an edge that can also take games over physicaly.

Anyways, that previous post was just a hypothetical thinking. There's Toronto with overpaid chaps (unless you're counting only the reg season, lol), and there's Edmonton where the best player in the World takes a discount just to see the team doing some weird moves and signings. May 8 can't get here soon enough with the lottery

Since we've been picking up the so called "miracle points" all season long, maybe it's not miracle points, but games where the team overachieves. It wasn't until the TDL did we see other teams get far worse than us despite us going 0-9-2 (2 pts) in our last 11 games.

This is where McTavish's presence makes a difference. At every WJC where both Bedard and McTavish were on, they were often paired together with Bedard on McTavish's wing. At their last WJC, McTavish had to take on a different role at the playoffs stage, a shutdown center, which affected his scoring and not playing with Bedard.

I'm very high on McTavish's ceiling and future because of his performance since his D+0 season to this year.

With Lundy aboard and Verbeek adding physical prospects recently in C Gaucher, C Hvidston, and F Wiebe along with two-way guy like 6'2 Nesterenko, maybe we can find a suitable winger with McTavish-Bedard. Although, McTavish has often been paired with the smaller offensive guys at the WJC as we had a line of 5'8 Stankoven-McTavish-Bedard.

If we don’t get Bedard, I’m rooting for Columbus so they can have Bedard and Gaudreau down the middle.

John
If we don't get Bedard I'm rooting for literally anyone but Chicago to get him with a disfavored view towards San Jose (rivals), Montreal (fans would be annoying about it for the next 15 years), Washington (recently good team), St. Louis (same), and Buffalo (right on the cusp of being competitive for years).

A lot of people have let it go but I don't think the Blackhawks deserve to get rewarded for covering up the actions of a sexual predator on their staff after they got a slap on the wrist and only had to pay a nominal sum in settlement. I hope they end up with no choice but to draft Michkov with all the attending uncertainty that comes with the selection.

We were still bad. Gibson just played out of his mind for what can only be explained as him trying to juice his trade value ahead of the deadline. He stole games the Ducks had no business winning.

To me, the difference is that the Ducks have an arguably stronger youth core in the midst of this rebuild.

Add Bedard to the mix of

Terry-McTavish-Bedard
???-Zegras-Strome
Bottom 6

Fowler-Drysdale
Mintyukov-Zellweger
Lacombe-???Defensive specialist

Dostal
???

And that's the makings of a very good team. We'd just have to figure out a solid second line winger, a bottom 6 of above average role players, a shutdown defensive specialist, and a back up for Dostal. I think after everything shakes out and the team actually learns to support him, Dostal can be better than any goalie the Leafs and Oilers are currently rolling with.

Toronto arguably has the higher end firepower between Matthews and Marner, but I'd expect Zegras and McTavish to end up better than Nylander and the rest. Edmonton is three guys they drafted (McDrai and RNH) and a mish mash of the best guys they could get (e.g. Kane, Ekholm and Hyman) everyone else is pretty barely above average to average. And the right coach could tip things in Anaheim's favor as well.
