Since it seems the Ducks will likely finish bottom 5 this year, I figured we should have a thread for discussing the implications of where the f***s will finish in the standings. As well as what factors could affect where they finish.

Tonight was interesting as all bottom 5 teams earned 2 points sans the Ducks and the Hawks.

Hey Folks,

Want to clear some of the air here, Tank talk is not an issue, please talk tank to your heart’s content here, totally understand how critical it is for that Future Potential Top pick. The issue is posting in the GDT, like you want the team to lose or make posts that you are angry they are winning or won the game, or bashing the team for not tanking.

The main reason is, to respect your fellow members. The GDT is about discussion of the game on a live basis and then post game discussion and opinions. A lot of fans are not rooting for the team to lose, and everyone has their views and opinions towards tanking, and may not want to discuss tanking in the GDT

If you guys have any concerns, feel free to PM me or another mod, and would be happy to explain more in detail.

Thanks!

Leo

Again -Like Leo said, if you don’t like what someone is posting here, PM a mod. Don’t engage and then attack them in a post that guarantees they’ll come back and respond/defend themselves. This is a tank thread, not an unmoderated thread, it would be appreciated if all parties help keep tensions (and our workload) down. Thank you.
so it's cool for posters to come in here and shit on rooting for the team to lose (which is why this thread exists,) but responding back to them is where the line gets drawn? got it. makes total sense!

No it’s not, which is why I posted the reminder. It’s the same as folks going into the GDT posting they are pissed that they are winning. Just ask members to respect each-other’s views when it comes to rooting for the team. Debate the team not the posters.

This is the final discussion on this, need to move back to the subject at hand, which is the tanking for a better draft position, thanks.

If people are going to continue this , there will be warnings and thread bans handed out, and I want to try and avoid that.

1 - When a mod posts in a color, READ THE POST.
2 - When you quote a mod’s colored post, READ THE POST

That post was not so we can have a happy Funtime chat with you, it is so we can address any posts that are issues and deal with them. You adding your posts adds to 2 things - our work, and your chance of getting warnings. It does nothing useful. Don’t feed the trolls, and don’t think the presence of trolls entitles you to ignore all the rules of posting here.

Speaking of said rules, here they are. Read them. The answers to your questions are right there.

* Please note: rules are interpreted and enforced at the discretion of Moderators, Moderator Supervisors, and site Administrators. Violations deemed severe enough will be reviewed by the administrators.

** If you see a post that violates any of the above rules, use the report post feature. Using this can bring it to the attention of all active moderators and it will be addressed as quickly as possible. Once a post is reported, leave it alone and let the mods do their job. Do not respond to the post, tell the poster they were reported, or chide people for violating the rules.

Tanking isn't just for the first round, but also all of the other ensuing rounds. I remember years ago how the Kings finished with a worse record than us and the Kings snatching up prospects we wanted before our turn. In 2021 draft, things flipped. Sure, we got McTavish at #3 overall, but we snagged both D Zellweger and Winger Pastujov at the top of the 2nd and 3rd rounds, respectively.

If we finish in the top-3, then we'll stay in the top-3 for the rest of the other rounds like in 2021 even if we move down in the first round due to the lottery. And since we need more forward help in our system, then we can focus on a potential top-6 forward with our own 2nd round pick. We can help ourselves with better talent depth.

I agree, particularly in the second round. If a team is picking in the top five in the second round it is usually picking a player who was considered by some as a late first round pick. It almost acts as getting talent equal to a second first round pick.

I spent a good part of the season hoping for the team to win. I only embraced the tank late in the season when it was obvious that the best hope for the Ducks was to finish as low as possible in order to get the best possible draft choice. Next year I will go back to hoping for wins. I don't want to endorse tanking for two or three years in a row. I somehow feel dirty when I do support tanking, and while I recognize the disaster of this year, I don't want to repeat it.
I think this pretty much sums up the season nicely. And yeah, I’m not putting up with this shitshow of a season next year. However he does it, PV needs to give people hope and a product to enjoy starting next year.

I’d definitely feel better at losing out at bedard at #3 than #1. I’m fine with sticking here. Carlson is a huge get. Michkov is a steal if he comes over within 3 years. That’s an if. Heck maybe he will defect. I trust our FO

There is a lot of overreacting on here.. we finish top - 4 and we still get a great player

He has to address the defense in some fashion you’d think. Or maybe he just wants Fowler gone and this is the way.
I give up thinking I have any idea what he will do. But I honestly believe the biggest improvement he could make starting next year is to bring in a coach who knows how to get the best out of all 22 guys.

But yeah, I’d love to see somebody besides Fowler who can actually play solid D.

It is understandable. When you have a chance at a Ferrari or a Bentley and still wind up with a Cadillac, one shouldn’t complain, but still feels cheated.
That’s exactly the issue with this year’s draft. There is an opportunity to get a truly phenomenal talent. An opportunity that doesn’t come along often, and even when it does your team is usually far from having a decent chance to land that talent. But this year, it’s different.

All of a sudden the stars are lining up and we realize what an opportunity we have. Tension runs high. If this were last year‘s draft (or most others) it wouldn’t be worth all the current arguments going on. Hell, in most years the first pick is seldom the best pick, in hindsight. There’s a good chance that won’t be true this year.

I want that f***ing Lamborghini!

It would be interesting to draft Michkov since if he doesn’t help the team improve for a few years there’s a decent chance we could also draft Misa

And then they both join the team at the same time (this is the dream scenario I’m using to cope with picking up that point yesterday which for some reason I have a bad feeling will haunt us for a very long time).

If Michkov comes in 3 years, would that be when his elc begins? Having that kind of talent starting his elc when we should be rounding the final turn of our rebuild might just be a gamble I’d take if we are picking out of the top 3.

I embraced the tanking at last year's TDL. In order to get back to the playoffs, we have to replace the players we lost and get more talent to give us depth. The most difficult players to replace would be the talents lost of Lindholm and Manson. Verbeek's reset rebuild will have to create much more depth the team doesn't possess last year nor today. Also, Verbeek cited using that depth to help control the salary cap. My brain says it'll be a while to get there. I did share these thoughts often when the TDL happened and since.

Although we'll be getting a top-5 forward in this year's draft, it doesn't mean much if our defense isn't fixed. Therein lies the problem, Verbeek is growing our blueline from our prospect pool and that will take time developing. Next couple of years is about the prospect blueliners hopefully matriculating into the NHL ranks.

2023-24: RD Drysdale and LD/RD LaCombe (maybes: RD Helleson, LD/RDHinds)
2024-25: LD Minty, LD/RD Zell, and Hinds
2025-26: RD Luneau and RD Moore
2026-27: RD Warren

The 2025 season is the earliest I can see Verbeek using up draft picks or prospects to land notable NHL players to join the Ducks.
