Last year's deadline was inexcusable, as they were out of the equation, just above the CBT threshold, and had expiring contracts they weren't going to make competitive offers to keep. Bloom completely botched it. But the unknown factor - and it's a big one - is how much of that was Bloom's own autonomous decision and how much was ordered from ownership? If Bloom wanted to trade Bogaerts or JDM as rentals but Henry/Werner told him flat no so they could sell tickets into September, it changes everything.
This year they were in a tighter spot that was pretty much a no-win situation unless he pulled off some miracles (and I posted that during the deadline week, so this isn't hindsight). They were close enough to be realistically in the wildcard race but far enough from the top to not be a move away from being a legit championship contender. They couldn't sell or they'd be viewed as quitters by the media/fanbase. They couldn't buy or it'd be mortgaging the future for a pipe dream of competing this year when they're just getting their farm system back together. He really could only try to make lateral moves that would either help this year at low cost or something that could help out next year too. All he could pull off in the end was Urias, who both helps settle down 2B and has a club option for next year. Beyond that I do think his hands were tied, though a more seasoned GM with greater vision (like a Theo Epstein or John Mozeliak) would've milked more out of less. So in sum I'm not as bothered by this year's deadline per se, he didn't blow it like he did the year before, but he didn't hit it out of the park. Status quo. The team is deficient in the pitching staff thanks to his decisions the last couple offseasons, but the collapse of the last couple weeks has been just as much on the hands of Cora and the players. Lots of blame to go around, and they're clearly not on the same page. I think if this team's going to be successful going forward, whether it's with Bloom or another GM, they're going to have to fire Alex and let them choose their own manager that they're on the same page with.
