Not just the Braves, but look at what the Rays did with Wander Franco, the Mariners with Julio Rodriguez, etc.

That's the new best practice around MLB. Move away from buying at the top of the market, and get your younger star players under contract for as long as possible, as soon as you can.
Players with good agents will not let that happen. They will just do what Mookie Betts did.

So I do think this depends on where you are in service time. If you're a year or two from free agency and a proven star, you're not taking a deal. Bello and Casas? I think that's a little different. However, that would require the GM getting off his ass and being aggressive.

yeah, the Rays are probably thrilled to have Franco locked up...

Last year's deadline was inexcusable, as they were out of the equation, just above the CBT threshold, and had expiring contracts they weren't going to make competitive offers to keep. Bloom completely botched it. But the unknown factor - and it's a big one - is how much of that was Bloom's own autonomous decision and how much was ordered from ownership? If Bloom wanted to trade Bogaerts or JDM as rentals but Henry/Werner told him flat no so they could sell tickets into September, it changes everything.

This year they were in a tighter spot that was pretty much a no-win situation unless he pulled off some miracles (and I posted that during the deadline week, so this isn't hindsight). They were close enough to be realistically in the wildcard race but far enough from the top to not be a move away from being a legit championship contender. They couldn't sell or they'd be viewed as quitters by the media/fanbase. They couldn't buy or it'd be mortgaging the future for a pipe dream of competing this year when they're just getting their farm system back together. He really could only try to make lateral moves that would either help this year at low cost or something that could help out next year too. All he could pull off in the end was Urias, who both helps settle down 2B and has a club option for next year. Beyond that I do think his hands were tied, though a more seasoned GM with greater vision (like a Theo Epstein or John Mozeliak) would've milked more out of less. So in sum I'm not as bothered by this year's deadline per se, he didn't blow it like he did the year before, but he didn't hit it out of the park. Status quo. The team is deficient in the pitching staff thanks to his decisions the last couple offseasons, but the collapse of the last couple weeks has been just as much on the hands of Cora and the players. Lots of blame to go around, and they're clearly not on the same page. I think if this team's going to be successful going forward, whether it's with Bloom or another GM, they're going to have to fire Alex and let them choose their own manager that they're on the same page with.

If you're not going to sell at the deadline you can't be out of contention before labor day. Another failure of a season.
Yep. Indefensible lack of action for the 2nd straight year from Bloom. That is the evidence needed to determine he can't handle this job. He does not know how to be proactive. On anything. I am pretty confident in saying you're not gonna get very far when you won't trade ANY prospects. A good GM should be able to use a highly rated system in different ways. You supplement your major league team with young talent and also trade away prospects for proven talent. You don't just hoard prospects and pray like you are the Orioles, Pirates, Reds. No thank you to that philosophy.

I just saw that Chaim Bloom was on Gresh and Fauria? I mean can we find a worse show for that interview to take place on. My god. All 7 people that heard it must have thoroughly enjoyed it. Imagine those two football neanderthals asking baseball questions.

Having listed to the interview of course the two bird brains don't ask many challenging questions.

Down 3-0, probably on the way to getting swept at home for about the 10th time this season. Completely falling apart and not even making it to September to compete. Firing Bloom should absolutely be in John Henry's mind.

If there are actually any Red Sox fans at the game boo this team off the field and head for the exits

Just turned on the game...and off.

Emphasis on "another". Last year was probably even worse staying a few millions above the CBT.

Now this team won't play relevant September baseball, but at least still have Turner, Paxton, Duvall for 30 more meaningless games. Hooray.

This week has been the nail in the coffin. Cora will finish out the year but I'm sure he's gone this offseason. Wouldn't shock me if Dusty Baker retired and he went over to his friends in Houston.
