There would have to be some salary retention no doubt.
But he's truly elite. Those guys are hard to find and that's what Boston needs, another elite player. Complete change the dynamic of this team offensively.
I don't care about Karlsson's defensive skills. Let the other 5 D worry about that.
Any D who can come close to equaling a forward like Connor McDavid's numbers at EV can play for my team any day of the week.
Fantasy stuff fit for mid-summer. Ain't happening but that's what I would do.
Agree to disagree.
As you note, it's fantasyland and will not happen for several reasons, not least that the Bruins have zilch to exchange in a trade.
Doubtless you'll think me crazy, a fool, or both, but I don't want a defenseman who cannot, or will not, play defense, however talented.
What does allowing an elite prima donna to ignore his defensive responsibilities tell the D corps?
What message does it send to his teammates?
What would it do to the team first, three zone, two-way game the Bruins have demanded of their players for fifteen plus years?
What would it do to the inclusive, accountable culture Bruins leaders from Z to Patrice to Brad have fostered and instilled over that period?
I'll tell you what it would do.
It would destroy that culture and make a mockery of it, that's what it would do.
I am not interested in Fancy Dan superstars, however dazzling. I'll take a player like Z or Patrice -- or Shawn Thornton or Andrew Ferrence -- over an individual talent any day of the week.
Nor am I interested in a 33 year old Erich Karlsson, point machine that he is, as the last time I looked he's never won a thing, save three bogus Norris trophies.
The idea that he was
*ever* named the league's best defenseman is a joke, and says more about the misplaced priorities of the NHL than anything else.
