I just can't co-sign this type of thinking. His movements after game 3 this year were super stiff and he didnt look right again - and then they mention an injury weeks later.

...and then last year...

are we forgetting the absolute dog water performance we put on throughout the season vs the canes and then the first two games in carolina??? we got stomped heartily in all facets and it was open season on ullmark. by the time sway made it into the series, the boys got parts of their heads out of their butts but putting the first couple games on linus seems like rewriting history to me.

So let’s me get this straight. All his bad games don’t count and only his good ones do?

swayman benefitted from 2 home games vs 1 away, the team not pissing down their legs constantly, and still gave up 13 in 3 games in that series (including a win!)... they were scoring at will at times

lol double edit - 3 home/2 away for 17 goals in 5 games - but 13 in the last 3

This is exactly what I'm pencilling in for the top nine forwards and the top four defenseman.

I think your 4th line is going to be Lucic - Brown - Lauko with opportunities for McLaughlin, Beecher and Merkulov to beat out Brown. I hope one of them does...

Forbort and Shattenkirk is more than likely the bottom pair but I'm not ruling out Forbort being waived and given the "Mike Reilly" treatment if he isn't claimed. I guess that all depends if Zboril impresses.

I'm keeping my eye on Winnipeg, I think they need to move a defenseman they have Capobianco, Stanley and Chisholm as their 7-9. Logan Stanley requested a trade and so I think he could be on the move soon unless they feel like they can slip him through waivers...he'd provide some much needed physicality and toughness
How I read the tea leaves:

Merkulov isn’t a fourth line guy. If he’s going win a job it’s a center or wing on the second or third lines. Moving Coyle or JVR down, and Geekie down to the 4C. It could happen for sure.

Brown is there as insurance in case Beecher or McLaughlin can’t win the 4C job, or Merk doesn’t win a top 9 role and Geekie has to slot on the third.

Everyone is writing Lauko in in pen (funny - imagine anyone possibly predicting that last year) but there are a few guys competing with him for a job too, including Beecher and McLaughlin. Though I think Lauko is 13F at worst. Greer seems destined for Providence - or at least we should hope he is because that means someone has stepped up.

Bergeron being back at the beginning of the season takes that top 9 slot away, and puts Merk v. JVR as a head to head battle. Krejci back puts Merk in Providence.

Lohrei has to beat out Grizz or Forbort. I’d play a wet paper bag over Forbort, but they value a LH PK role more than I would, so Lohrei only beats out Forbort if they think he can PK. Probably puts Lindholm as PK1 which isn’t ideal, but it has to happen this year or next. There’s a chance Zboril could beat out Forbort (I’d play him over potato hands every day of the week) but I think it’s more likely that Lohrei does. Shattenkirk is safe IMO - and a great partner to break in a rookie. Mitchell and the other kids could compete for a 7 or 8D spot, but more likely they’re there for sorely needed RHD depth in the A.

My feelings on Grizz don’t need to be rehashed obviously, but Lohrei could beat Grizz out and make him expendable. But in the near term, that’s to 7D. No room out there to get any sort of reasonable return for him. He’s worth more than some throw away fourth round pick in a normal cap situation, and would return far more than that at the deadline. Despite my feelings about him, if he’s going to be benched for Clifton or potato hands in the playoffs, may as well deal him. But no way you give him away.

Longshots to steal a slot (like Lauko last year, before anyone says it can’t happen) would be Toporowski or Poitras. But the chance that they toss a 19 year old into a top 6 center slot seem remote. And there’s always a chance (either because of injury or because Hellebuyck gets dealt and the goalie carousel that everyone predicted actually happens) that a backstop is moved, but absent that there’s no reason to sell low there.

People seem to like to take past performance as static, and don’t allow for any growth or leaps from the young guys. I can guarantee there’s nothing the Boston brass would like more than to have to put Brown on the bench or in Provy, or to waive JVR because he was beaten out. And there are 5-6 young players who have opportunity - something that hasn’t been around for a while.

Like I said in my first post to you, I’m not even convinced of swayman either. I get that concern too and I have questions too.

I just really don’t know how many playoff runs you can let Ullmark do this. Whatever excuse you want to give for ullmark, ultimately he was in the net for those losses and didn’t play well.

How many more postseason runs of abysmal play (for whatever the excuse) does he get?

Can we stop with the let the kids play stuff please. Lohrei should be an NHL defenseman and may become a good one. Merkulov, McLaughlin, Lauko, Lysell and the rest of Providence are not exactly the best prospects out there. I like Lauko, I like McLaughlin but i like both as bottom 6 forwards. They do not have a top 6 prospect, they know it, it is why the signed JVR, Geekie, and traded for Walsh and the two Blackhawk D men.

If they had any faith in Beecher they would not have signed Brown for 2 years on a one way deal or thought Lysell was going to crack the lineup you wouldn't see Geekie here. They know what they have in Providence and it isn't much.

Let the kids play if you want to protect that first round pick for next year, they are trying to make the playoffs and think they can squeeze enough offense out of what they have and hope the powder puff D and goaltending hold up. That probably gets them a wild card and JJ's home playoff dates. If Bergeron resigns they might even get 3 to 5 home playoff games. That should be enough for the Jacob's family and some posters on here.

Bergeron comes back Sweeney is basically running it back

He would pretty much have the foundation of the team that was heading into trade deadline

Krejci likely gone which I think he expected and Hall move with 2/12 was the luxury he could afford

His top 4 D and both G bxck

Clifton gone from third pair but Monty scratched 4 of last 5 playoffs one game played Cost them and Monty had no faith

I like this years 4th line options because merkulov should get a look

Bergeron the key once again / he’s like the oil that allows it to run high performance. Without him call dad ‘gee I don’t know what happened ? It started smoking and I was able to pull into Applebees parking lot and it died’

Hes back 110-120 points he’s out 91-100

It’s appropriate it’s his 20th season because He’s worth 20 points
37 calls 46..…”we both come back and have basically the same team as last year. Let’s give it one more try.”

I read somewhere and it may have been here, where Hall was upset with training staff regarding his injury. This may have played a part? Then again I am getting old and may have misread it. Sweeney may have had his hand forced a bit.. Also Sweeney has always built his team from the goal out. I don't think you will see him getting rid of a defenseman unless a better one comes back.

Well I am getting a mixed message here , I am not sure who said it but that Sweeney was getting calls on Gryz , But Sweeney gives the impression that he does not want to move Gryz..........not sure that is the right approach to be taking with a player the coach kept out the lineup during the playoffs.......Power struggle that is not being reported..........
Sweeney was getting calls on Gryz as far back as talks with St Louis about Schenn. Gryz was in a few packages thrown back and fourth between the 2 GMs. Sweeney was ready to pull the trigger but Armstrong kept upping the ante and finally walked away.

It's not that he doesn't want to move him. He wants what he thinks is full value for him.

You choose to move the winger , with no replacement , Ullmark could be replaced........

Well I am not sure who would know if Sweeney is getting calls on Gryz, . Maybe Sweeney is trying to drum some interest in Gryz to see if he can move him. No Gm is going to be straight forward with you on what is going on. I suspect there was several players Sweeney explored moving besides Hall , but there was no takers . A Dman making 3.687mil and being a scratch for playoff games by the coach on a team that went out in the first round . Has how much value when so many teams are struggling to remain cap compliant ????

Just read Dom's post on Gryz seems tried to move him but felt the cost or return was to low

The Bruins were sitting at 44-8-5 (134 point pace) the day they made the Washington deal

Add 37 & 46 and you are only missing Hall from top 9F, 4D, 2G in that game

However Krejci acted like he’s gone and Bergeron according to someone who knows better then me was win the Cup last year and ride off into sunset

He comes back they are East favorites and should be SC favorites

He’s got one more year in him and the supporting cast is good enough to carry him as well

Clifton last 4 periods as a Bruins 11 goals against- absolute train wreck. Great he hits but I’m good adding 4 RHD.

Geekie snd Sprong were stunning non Qualifiers but it was money of course and Seattle got stuck

Geekie is an offensive player but he also gets after it - the team he would have actually fit really well was Florida

However I like it and I’m hoping for a Frederic -Coyle - Geekie third line

The Bruins as of now return their top 4 D and both goalies / if it’s not the best six in the league it’s top 2-3 (but I’m putting them one - especially in the regular season that only matters you get in playoffs spots mean little)

That sure makes sense to me but not Rocco & Biff at my gym and deli

Sweens unless he gets fair value roll with him and next February 24th add a Hanifin if he’s still out there with the intention of long term

Monty didn’t trust Clifton at all and even Grzelcyk game 6 in Florida- he will likely fall in line with veteran Shattenkirk

I love the idea of what Sweens has done with his D & G - run it back FOR NOW, add 4 D and have Bussi hopefully ready by mid season if need be

Sweeney makes moves and has balls going back to the Nash deal (outstanding deal but he got concussion) so I’m certain on March 1 that the D comp will be upgraded

Not sure if it has been mentioned before but cap space was the asset for trading Tqylor Hall. Were there any other players moved to free up cap that also returned assets? I haven't paid attention to moves this offseason.
Obviously, no situation is exactly the same... But players with cap that returned non-future considerations. Nor were all of these strictly cap moves, but GMs can make moves happen

Reilly Smith got traded for a 3rd

RFA Ross Colton got a 2nd

Toffoli and Sharongovich were traded for one another.

Blackwood got a 6th

Dubois (wasn't a cap dump)

Newhook (don't think this was a cap dump that got a solid package, if so)

Hayes for a 6th

Durzi got a 2nd

Ryan Johansen for Alex Galchenyuk

Damon Severson for a 3rd

Bruins got 2 prospects in a position they had the least available NHL spots, while weakening the forward roster.

I mean MAYBE that's the literal best Sweeney could do.

But asset management has not been a strong suit of this management. And between selling players for scraps, paying to get rid of players, and not finishing the job when we buy rentals, long term I think the Bruins have sent out far more out than the quantity or quality they received.

Aside from 2015, Sweeney hasn't really sold a player or gotten a big return on sending players out.

Now that the team failed, I think recouping assets should be a goal, but our team is already a bit weaker. And I do think trading Hall without recouping any picks (as well as Foligno's rights) is overall a bad use of our assets.

Could they have gotten more? Maybe, maybe not.

Bergy and Krejci I think are both coming back. Like a few posters mentioned, basically the same team pre-deadline as last year with:
1. Hall, Clifton, Foligno, Nosek gone
2. JVR, Geekie, Lucic, Brown, Shattenkirk, Mitchell in
3. Potentially one or more surprises Lohrei, Beecher, Merkulov, Lauko, Lysell, Poitras

Marchy-Bergy-Debrusk (I think this line out produces themselves from a year ago)
Zacha-Krejci-Pasta (Similar production from this group)
Frederic-Coyle-Geekie (Outproduces the 3rd line from last season)
Lucic-Brown/Merkulov/Beecher-Lauko/Lysell/Greer

Gryz/Lohrei-McAvoy
Lindholm-Carlo
Gryz/Lohrei/Zboril/Forbort-Shattenkirk

Ullmark
Swayman

Improvements:
1. Team toughness will be much better this season, Lucic alone puts the fear of god in most people
2. Defense has the potential to be better this season, especially if Lohrei can step in and make an immediate impact.
3. Shattenkirk should help either PP1 or PP2
4. Everyone is healthy starting the season vs missing Marchy, Gryz, McAvoy last year

I will take us finishing 1st in the East again, not the president's trophy winner but 1st in the East and making some major impact moves at the deadline for guys like Hanifin/Lindholm/Sheifele etc

How many players for 1 million dollars give you

In regular season
70GP
16-40-56
3rd leading scoring on team at even strength
18th most primary assist in the entire nhl

In playoffs
4GP
1-3-4

Including 3 points in game 7
Yes I know the stats but 46 will be yet another year older and I'm just ready to turn the page and not watch another repeat of what we saw.
