You never know! If Michkov goes top three with Bedard/Fantilli, all it takes is the number 4 team to be one of those that prefers NA players to euros and they pick Smith over Carlsson
The only way Michkov goes top three, would be if he was actually at the draft.

I’ve resigned to the fact we won’t be picking 17th. The sooner you accept it the less it hurts.
I want the Leafs to win...Canadian team.. original 6...plus, we would get the 17 pick in the upcoming draft.

Am I crazy or is Leo Carlsson stylistically reminiscent of Dach? He has a better shot though, which is probably the only thing missing from Dach's offensive arsenal.

He is a copy paste of what I loved with Dach AT the draft and what I hated. Skating, IQ, size but underused shot. I had Dach at 3 and I think I have Carlsson at 2 now.

3 weeks ago, the discussion on this board was who is better between Zach Benson and Will Smith and it was close to 50/50

Now Will Smith is better the Leo Carlsson ? Something isn't working...
Well farming weak teams in a stacked team is a proof of future success in the NHL Haven t you Heard ?

I think my top 8 is pretty set assuming Reinbacher doesn’t destroy the WCs. The reason I’m doing a top 8 is just for the off chance we don’t have Michkov on our board at all.

1. Bedard
2. Fantilli
3. Carlsson
4. Smith/Dvorsky
5. Dvorsky/Smith
6. Michkov (2nd if there’s no Russian factor)
7. Leonard/Benson
8. Benson/Leonard

There might be some flip flopping between Smith and Dvorsky as well as between Leonard and Benson but those are the best 8 guys in the draft IMO.
I Can see Benson drop like Caufield did, because of size. I can't see WSH or PHI drafting small guys.

Drafting a goalie would be such a L
Why? Carey at 5 wasn't bad. If there is proper time and effort into scouting goalies and we have an obvious top goalie of the draft, I am all in for drafting him with the 29-32nd. With all of the clamouring for the first round forwards in this draft, a goalie may be overlooked here. Goalies are so underrated in this league. Look what Carey did for our finals run. Look what Bob is doing this year. Look at what Vas has done previous years. Come playoff time, teams with a goalie that can steal games is invaluable.

Hrabel looks to be a very very good pick.

For those of you who are pushing back against the idea of drafting a goalie late 1st round if the Panthers pick falls there.

We have an opportunity to do something just like this:

Would anyone argue that the Stars made a mistake drafting Oettinger? He's an absolute f***ing stud.

Their GM was a small forward who had a pretty good career.

I'd say getting big forward and prospective center Cutter Gauthier at #5 overall last year was the true start of their rebuild.
True that Gauthier adds size but let us see if he becomes a center or winger at NHL level. Maybe I am wrong but I expect PHI to focus on more physical players, back to classic Philly style

What a draft! A franchise D, a franchise goalie and a franchise offensive forward all in the system by pick #39.

Trade Florida's pick (29th) to Chicago for pick 35 and pick 58.

At 35 I would imagine Hrabal, or Bjarnason is left. Get a 2nd 2nd pick in a deep draft.

Possibly ?

Or that pick to Nashville for 46th and 47th. Draft is in Nashville so a 3rd 1st round pick might be in their sights.

Hrabal, nor any other goaltender in this draft, is even close to Carey.

We actually can't pick #30. That pick will go to WCF loser as Florida is the worst team in playoffs they'll get the better pick.

17. Florida loses to Leafs
29: Florida loses in CF
31. Florida loses in SCF
32. Florida wins SC

I'm not pushing for a goalie at 5. But, in the 29-32nd range wouldn't be so bad, particularly if we have done some proper scouting and know what we are getting. I am a bad judge of tender prospects, so I won't argue with you.

But assuming we take a forward with our pick, we will have a ton of young depth up and down the lineup at F and D. G needs to be filled for us.

Top 6 forwards for the future
2023 top 5
Suzuki
Caufield
Dach
Slaf
PLD (hopefully)

Bottom 6 futures
Farrell
Roy
Kidney
Heinemen
Beck
Mesar
RHP

Defensive futures
Guhle - top pair potential
Hutson - top pair potential
Barron - 2nd/3rd pair potential
Mailloux - 2nd /3rd pair potential
Axe - 3rd/2nd pair potential
Harris - 3rd/2nd pair potential
Engstrom - 3rd pair potential
Struble - 3rd pair potential

Goalie futures
Monty
Dobes
Primeau
Dichow

We have high end futures in the forward category (that top 6) , defensive category (Guhle, Barron Hutson and Mailloux) plus a ton of other NHL ready guys that can take leaps in development.

Those goalie futures are lacking a game stealer. I don't see it in any of them. Maybe Hrabel is that guy?

A guy like Hrabal isn't that far ahead of other guys like Fowler, Clara, Bjarnason, Gajan, etc to warrant picking him 20+ spots ahead.

Pick the faller in the third and get an actual valuable piece in the first round. Think of Oettinger and Swayman, Skinner, UPL.

The Dallas example is really cool, but are they any worse if they pick Swayman at 101 and they go for Luostorainen, Hague, Frost, Tolvanen or Jokiharju instead AT 26?

Then you're not even getting to the fact that, while Hrabal is very good, (and so is Bjarnasson, Fowler, Clara, Gajan, etc...), none of them actually separated themselves from the group.
