Will Smith, C (#2): It felt like the Will Smith show from Day 1. His creativity was unmatched, which led to him scoring a tournament-high 20 points en route to being named MVP. Many scouts I talked to wondered if he’ll go No. 5. I still think Zach Benson has a bit more high-end potential, but if Smith falls to sixth, that team is getting a future No. 1 center.

Much higher skill level imo. Leonard can actually beat defenders with stickhandling, and can create plays with his vision/passing. Comparing him to Hyman is underrating him I think.
Leonard reminds me of Keith Tkachuk.
Smith reminds me of Patrick Kane.
Dvorsky compares well to Patrice Bergeron.

1. Absolutely.
2. In the more plausible scenario were we pick 6th and the top 5 is Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson/Michkov/Smith, I don't think you can go wrong with either one of Benson/Leonard/Reinbacher/Dvorsky. You could logically argue any order between these 4.
...
Now what if we managed to get two of them...

Would be nice if HuGo used that pick that should have been 14 if the Penguins had beaten the Blackhawks, but is now 17, to move up and get a 2nd player from that foursome.

I was wondering if the latest slew of Russian prospects signing their ELC was typical around this time of year, or if NHL teams needed to rush before some mysterious announcement.

KHL contracts typically expire at the end of April.
The Gagarin Cup playoffs just concluded on April 29 so the timing makes a lot of sense.
I also looked at ELCs signed from April 29-May 5 for the last 5 years and there were always min 3-4 Russians.

All that to say, the trend doesn't seem to be changing despite the war in Ukraine (number of ELCs, timing).
Had it gone down, we could be questioning the players' desire to cross the pond.
Had it gone way up, we could be questioning whether the NHL teams know some new KHL rule is expected, and rushed to sign their players before it was put into effect.
With Miro even being allowed to exercise his buy-out clause, it sure sounds like as long as you don't forge your military service papers (ref Fedotov), it's business as usual for hockey.

Hyman got 83 points this year. We'll see if Leonard ever gets that many points in a season. I think you're underrating Hyman.

Leonard may have a little more creativity but they're both complimentary players whose role is to win puck battles in the offensive zone and setup their more creative/better finishing linemates

Kane is old and definitely 2,or 3 steps from. What he was. Tarasenko is also old and not as good as he once was. Kreider is just a pp specialist/net clean up. There's not a whole lot of skill there. Trouba throws hits and doesn't have much skill.
Add to this that skills alone does not win you a cup. For these who laugh at character, skill AND size. Watch the Tkatchuk brothers play and tell me you would not take one on your team!

I mean, Hyman plays with McDavid. That helps a lot.
