Drafting for the less talented more “reliable” player has never worked for the Habs.

Due to his name alone Will Smith is on my Do Not Draft list but if he’s got the higher offensive upside he’s the one to get. Dvorsky is also on my Do Not Draft list because three Slovaks of dubious appreciable upside is far too much risk.

The Habs have to draft the most talented offensive player they can.
70 pts is the floor, could pretty well end up as a PPG center under ideal conditions.

Have you been watching the tournament? Genuine question.

I didn't know much about Dvorsky before the tournament, and I must say he has grown on me. I think personally I like his toolkit a little bit more than Smith- and he showed off his hands today which was nice to see. In saying that tho Smith has had one hell of a tournament, and has definitely shown off his offensive skills. I have a feeling if we're drafting 5th/6th that Smith might already be off the board considering that tournament he's had.

Does Smith have the better offensive skills? Yes

Will Dvorsky end up being the better hockey player? Maybe.

How much more offense and speed (first step) can you get out of Dvorsky???

Can Will Smith handle a market like Montreal, especially if he isn't scoring???

Did you not watch the games? Dvorsky was all alone on Slovakia. No support, played in the stronger division and still had a terrific tournament even with every team keying in on him. He had 6 goals and 3 assists on Slovakia's last 10 goals. He's the second youngest player of all the usual top 15 candidates (only Bedard is younger).

It's a very good thing for the Habs that the top 7 players in this draft are all looking strong.

Button just said he thinks Edstrom will be a 1st rounder. I'm thinking possible top 20.

Crazy that he's #25 on Central Scouting's Euro list!

David Edstrom is pretty good.

Never heard the name before.

I'm quite impressed.

Was targeting him with our 3rd or 4th round pick. Guess he's not a secret anymore.

Hasn't been I'm guessing for a few months.

Habs need a mid round 2nd to get him and I hope they do.
I was thinking of him as a slight possibility with our 2nd round pick (#37) but he'll likely go in the 1st after this tournament. I would think top 25. He has crazy tools and he's been an impact player in this tournament.

Early second round seems reasonable but I could also see him creep into the late first. He has an enticing skillset and so many tools to work with. There are not many 6'5 guys with this kind of mitts and such a sublime passing game. The only weaknesses I could find were his shot which clearly lacks precision and his balance. He is still growing into his body.

While But is more of a finesse player at this stage, Halttunen has the clear profile as a power forward, often playing with brute force. His shot is better than But's for sure, and he is a fine prospect, but I don't like his Hockey IQ.

Yeah, i agree on everything.

I would pick him with the 17th pick but i know some wouldn’t

Wilde sorts prospects by their PPG basically.

That is why his opinion is entirely worthless, there are so many posters on these boards who are more knowledgeable than the majority of these fake scouts that the rest of the posters are constantly quoting.

Safe to say he would’ve scored at least 4 goals in the 36 games he missed this season lol.

He would have to pick up Brian Savageitis in order for his goal scoring to fall off a cliff like that.

His goal scoring only slowed down due to injury before he ultimately called it and ended his season.

He was on pace for 48-50 prior to injury.

And he has what, 47 goals in 87 games or something under MSL? He’s a 40 goal scorer, sure it’s not in a full regular season but that’s purely semantics to anyone that watches him play.

He’s a 40 goal guy.

this is all hilariously antipragmatic

Yeah, he’s a pretty consistent goal scorer also. Some are streaky, not him.

I know that everyone is all cranky about Slafkovsky but you don't actually still believe this after watching Dach, Caufield, Suzuki, Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Harvey-Pinard, Barron, Ylonen, etc. this year, do you?

And yes of course if we draft Smith or any of the other American prospects I'm perfectly OK with them playing a year in college.
This underlines my point. Those players you mentioned, like Smith, came through NA junior or college ranks (besides Ylonen, who's a 2nd rounder). A Caufield-like trajectory is a likely scenario with Smith.

Whereas Reinbacher and Dvorsky having played in pro leagues already and being more physically mature might bring the same temptation as it did with Slaf and KK.

Grant had him ranked mid 1st for a while and expects him to get drafted 1st round. After his U18, I think its safe to say he wont last very long.
