What if Smith goes 4 and the Habs sit at 4, you take Michkov or Reinbacher ?
I don't think the Habs will pick Michkov top 5 unless they 100% know he's coming over. Too risky for such a high pick.

So the answer to your question depends on the Habs intel. No one will know until draft day.

Somehow the Habs will draft 8th.

And agreed. I know people say next year's draft is better suited for dmen, but can't wait and see and draft one there because you need him and who knows, maybe the Habs stay healthy, Slaf has a full season and plays better, full season of Cole and the Habs might be drafting 14th.

Gotta take that d when you can.
No worries, Habs will suck next year as well. The Atlantic division is too strong, and we have Allen/Montembeault.

I almost want Michkov to get drafted, so that we don't even need to make the decision of drafting him or not, but at the same time, I don't see who in the top 4 would pass up a less risky potential #1C.

Anaheim (if they don't pick first) since they already have Zegras and McTavish?

Then we can draft Smith/Benson in top 5.

If Reinbacher shows out at the World Championships I’ll change my mind, but for now he’s a 8-12 pick not a top 6 guy. IMO the top 6 is clear.

Not my list but seems like a reasonable projection

Buffalo & Pittsburgh finished 1 point behind Florida. This is why people were getting pissy about the absolute choke jobs that those 2 organizations pulled.

At #13, Dvorsky might still be available. Can easily see St. Louis taking ASP, Vancouver Yager or Heidt, and Ottawa Barlow.

Instead, Buffalo gets #13.

There's no way Dvorsky's available at #13. He's one of the better pure centers in the draft and possesses too many qualities that NHL teams love.

But yes...the choke jobs by those teams still piss me off!

Stranger things have happened.
Can't see any scenario that happens. There were teams who loved him before the WU18.

But I agree 100% with your main point that our odds to draft another high end player would have been much better had all those teams in the Eastern Conference not choked down the stretch.

It's going to be a fun draft, I think.
Yup! It's great to see players in the 5-7 range of the draft having outstanding WU18 performances. I can't help but wonder if Carlsson might drop out of the top 4.

The performance of Dvorsky and Smith has calmed my nerves about staying at 5. I said before the tourney I wanted these two to show out, and so far so good.

If Michkov drops to 17, it won't be because scouts don't think he's good enough to play. It'll mainly be a GM decision on how willing are they to take the risk.
This may explain someone like But or Gulyayev falling, but not Michkov. There is no way Michkov drops out of the top 10, I'm ready to bank on that.
