As would I but realistically, I'd be disappointed no matter what if we don't get one of the top 4 guys. It's not the Habs fault or anything (at least to an extent), but 2 years of misery to come out with Slafkovsky and a guy like Dvorsky with our top picks would be discouraging. You'd expect at least one superstar type player.
Draisaitl was not a superstar after his first 40 NHL games.

Very early to say anything about Slaf.

I don't think so.

It's short sighted.

We aren't in WIN-NOW mode by any means.

PLD is young yes but he will still be 25 next season. Is he even THAT good? Does he have a ton of character and have what we need to win in the PLAYOFFS?

Getting PLD shifts us into WIN SOON mode, instead of the concrete rebuilding we are doing now.

There will be a ton of great talent available with FLA pick, and that talent will be very inexpensive to us for the next several years..... don't forget about that as well.
How is it short-sighted to trade a magic bean for an actual really good 25 year old player? If PLD was 30+, you’d have a point. But a 25 year old, big, multiple position 60-70 point forward is a huge addition.

There's plenty of upside at #6

I love Benson, but don't think he's got that PPG upside. Smith may have that kind of upside, but lots of question marks in his game. Unless of course Michkov drops down.

New Jersey won the lottery back to back going with Hischier and Hughes. Would be nice to get at least one player within the past 2 years that will be better than Hischier.

He’s pretty much the perfect winger for Nick and Cole. They need the guy willing to put in the board work and score around the net. Also someone that can take a bit of the centre duties from Nick from time to time.
With both being opposite handedness, they can pretty much always take the faceoff on their strong side, which is great.

Habs get a centre, or leave Dach as that and hope he really improves his faceoffs and put Slaf there, Benson fits in nicely with those two who can use their size to do the dirty work, but the have the skill to create plays, or finish them off.

So let’s assume we get PLD and he slots in next to Cole and Suzuki. Then let’s say Dach and Slafkovsky are 2/3s of the 2nd line. Who do we want to play with those two? I agree Benson would fit well, as would Dvorsky IMO. Smith not so much I’d say…

Also maybe Roy slides in there, I still believe Roy has top 6 ability and is pretty close to being ready.

I don’t think Dvorsky fits with those two. I think you need a more creative and better skating east-west player.

Both Slaf and Dach are playmakers first and foremost. Someone who can be a trigger man for them is the number one quality I’d look for. Dvorsky being a left handed sniper works both on that line and on the PP.

A shooter works, but not a two-way player with average skating that only shoots on the PP with time and space. Yager is the one that fits perfectly, like WTK mentioned.

Saw Lardis mentioned somewhere, my quick scouting report: loves to shoot. High IQ. Good skater. Plays 200 feet and has a great stick for creating turnovers. Good 2nd round target.

It's probably Gallagher or Anderson.

At least for next year, both are signed long term.

We'll see if Roy can make the team next season. I don't see any of our 1st round picks playing in NHL next year unless we win a lottery spot.

Benson needs time to continue to work on his speed & strength. Like Marner was when drafted, he's a year away.

Everyone else is 2 years away, with the possible exception of Wood & Barlow. Both of whom might only need another year too.

Slaf can do both but i’d say he’s always been a shooter first, that’s when he had most success.

For next year, a vet like Gally or Anderson would benefit both Dach and Slaf I think.

But thinking more long term, who from this draft would fit best with those two?
