At that rank, it's make it or break it. If we ever get a #2 pick, we have to make sure to pick the right player. Sometimes I watch Fantilli and I wonder if he's just physically just too much for the NCAA but does he possess the IQ to translate his offense and talent to the NHL. Carlsson, I just want to see a more dynamic player. Does Carlsson have the same or higher ceiling than Kirby Dach? We need an explosive player, that's why I think Fantilli might get the edge over Carlsson for me at this point, but they both are tremendous prospects with insane potential. But I'm a Michkov fan hahaha
The Big10 has an average age of 6'1 and 195 lbs and an average age of 22.1, it's not like he's playing against some random kids. I think that if you're too much for the NCAA, you're going to transition very well to any pro league.

Carlsson is very dynamic to me though, he moves the box and he pushes player around with his puck handling. I don't know how you'd want him to be more dynamic. He's maybe not 100% effective off the rush, mainly because I think he likes to slow the game, challenge defenders, install the cycle and just use his tremendous passing instead of his very good shot but to me he's as dynamic as most stars in the NHL. Unless of course were talking Bedard/McDavid/Mackinnon, then sure.
Carlsson is having one of the best seasons ever for a draft eligible prospect in the SHL. My comparison remains a Barkov like player. Fantilli's passing and shooting selections at times makes me cringe, he has some fantastic tools, but personally I prefer Carlsson's composure.
It's true that Carlsson is having a very good season but this argument flies out the window when Fantili is potentially having the best NCAA season ever for an undrafted u19 prospect.
Drafting Reinbacher before Michkov would be like drafting Brett Pesce before Panarin.
Neither players are comparables. I wouldn't draft Reinbacher ahead of Michkov though.
There’s a huge difference between excluding Russian teams and organizations in which they’re there to specifically represent their nation, and excluding a Russian person in a situation in which they represent only themselves.

One of these things sends a political message, the other is discrimination.
Amen but this is a sport and the sport is hockey. Don't expect much from the minds behind this. Actually, expect the worst.

Just a thought: I think drafting Mailloux burned up all the public backlash ammo the org could muster... I think Michkov might be too hot a commodity to touch.
Different regime, but I guess you could point to Molson allowing it.

However, if the Habs did draft him and people got upset, just point to the moms taking a picture with Ovechkin.

I can't see taking a Russian as being a social faux pas to that level. Especially Michkov.

Funny enough, every single one of you who keep crying about Reinbacher will absolutely drink the kool-aid when he starts showing up around the Habs. SMH, who would want a top 4 D with potential to be a 1D ?
Just stop it. Michkov is a way better prospect than Reinbacher. They're not on the same level.

If anyone draft Reinbacher over Michkov, they should be fired on the spot.

I think they will like Reinbacher more and you will get upset.
Slaf was #5 on my list...

1. Wright
2. Cooley
3. Jiricek
4. Nemec
5. Slaf

Of course it was based on talent alone... Maybe there were attitude problems that we're not aware of, but well.

I was upset when they chose Slaf, but I'm a fan of the team and I'll cheer for him. Top 5 was close enough for me to be kind of ok with them going for Slaf physical tools.

Reinbacher is a riser, but to draft him over Michkov, who looks like a generational talent, would be frickin ridiculous and I'd never forgive them, unless somehow they know he's lying when he says he wants to come over after his KHL contract.

Nothing against reaching for a RHD in a weaker D draft, but doing so while Michkov is available would an unforgivable sin.

Drafting Reinbacher before Michkov would be like drafting Brett Pesce before Panarin.
Imagine passing on Brett Pesce while Panarin is killing the KHL.

Yes we all know.

Michkov is right up there with Bedard. That is not the point.

The point is that there is a plethora of other very good prospects and also a strong possibility that Michkov stay in Russia for his whole career.

The opportunity cost of letting a prospects of Reinbacher/Barlow/Benson quality is very steep if Michkov never come. At some point, a line will have to be drawn and the Michkov risk will be palatable but in my humble opinion, it is after Reinbacher and a bunch of other forwards.

And anyone who drafts Michkov just for him to never come over could ruin a team’s rebuild. It’s not as black and white as you put it.
I get Fantilli before Michkov (big C, crazy NCAA season, not Russian) because at least he's in the conversation talent wise.

Carlsson I do not agree, but still, I get it.

That is personnally where I draw the line.

Reinbacher would have to have an excellent performance at the Worlds for me to consider in the Fantilli/Carlsson range of prospect.

Imagine we pick Reinbacher at #4, and he becomes a 2nd pair D while Philadelphia drafts Michkov at #5 he and becomes a Kaprisov/Panarin superstar hybrid when he comes over in three years?

We are laughing at the Flyers for picking York over Caufield.

Imagine now how much they'd be laughing at us forever and ever.

I'd be livid.

Why would there be public backlash? Anyone putting the weight of Putin’s decisions on an 18-year-old hockey player just because of where he was born is doing some serious mental gymnastics.
Have you not lived in the same world as the rest of us for the past 5 years! If someone even maybe possibly potentially does anything that could maybe offend anyone, that person is exiled from planet earth and must forfeit all possessions. Picking a Russian ?!?! That would offend some people because it would somehow directly support Putin and Trump

The whole Russian ban in tournaments is completely absurd, but that’s a story for another day.

Why? Based on what, exactly?

Who is the last high-level Russian prospect who didn't come over?

There is a wayyyyyyyy greater possibility we draft an American prospect like Smith, Leonard or Moore and they play their 4 years in college then f*** off to another team. Because that exact scenario ACTUALLY happens and is not just some boogeyman story we tell children.

Reinbacher is top pairing material, you are comparing him to some random prospects or NHLers. True that we could miss on an elite offensive talent, but the risk is too high, we likely wont be the only ones to pass on him for obvious reasons. Getting a top pairing RD defenseman would make it sweater to swallow.

Trust I would be insanely mad if they picked anyone but Bedard ahead of Michkov.

With that said, I think you're underselling Reinbacher. Pesce is not his ceiling, and he's much more toolsy and impactful player than him.

Kid says he wants to come over after his contract is done.

Unless you are privy to other informations, you draft him.

It is my dream to play in the NHL one day," Michkov told NHL.com through an interpreter. "But for now I will continue to work on my game and develop as a player at home."

Those are all hypothetical scenarios and yes this scenario would suck.

We will see if Michkov is present at the draft and at the combine.

Michkov is draftable but it is a very steep opportunity cost to pass on guys like Leonard, Barlow, Benson, Reinbacher, etc. Those are top 3 prospects for any team in the league. (The opposite is also true, it is a steep opportunity cost to pass Michkov and finally he comes and he is a perennial top 5 offensive player in the league.)

Its a tough situation but personally, i would go with drafting Michkov lower.

Guy I was answering to had Reinbacher before Michkov on his rankings. That Reinbacher hype madness needs to stop.

That is not accurate for top ten picks tho. Only true for later round picks who have long ncaa career path.

The NCAA guys you named are maximum two years away from their ELC. They would let so many millions on the table by doing this.

I think what everyone is trying to say is that it's not black and white to say "passing on Michkov I'd never forgive them" as if it's just some dude in the CHL.

Michkov supporters need to realize that there's a chance he goes after players less talented than him and it's due to the risk profile not necessarily because they think the other prospect is better.

Michkov is a unanimous #2 if its not of the russian risk. He is ranked lower simply because of the risk. We all know his on ice greatness.

Also, Reinbacher hype don't need to stop. I believe he would be right up there with Nemec and Jiricek if they were on the same draft year. He is f***ing good.
