Don't go to sleep on Logan Mailloux.

Mailloux + Barron on right side is a good start. One of them could still take the leap to top line D man.
I’m not sleeping on Mailloux but I don’t see too pair Dmen in him, way to many holes that will be tough to develop. His defensive game is terrible and he used to much his physical attributes to dominate, not sure about his IQ hockey.

I added a video. His vision and IQ is actually quite high. His defensive game is definitely his shortcoming...but it is improving from what I have seen throughout the year.

That he doesn't scream hockey sense on the ice. A lot of direct rushes into traffic, a lot of missed passing lanes and on defense, a lot of not reading the plays, a lot of flopping down onto the ice at the first sign of trouble.
Ok thanks, was genuinely interested because I don't watch him.

These highlights are all showcasing his offensive capabilities as a D-man. But he is improving as the season goes on, on the defensive side of the puck. His footwork, ability to close gaps and long reach are making it difficult for forwards to get by him. @ChesterNimitz had a good write up on his game a couple of weeks ago.

no one is sleeping on them it that most don’t see them being #1 or #2 Dman, best case scenario is that they become a #3 most likely a #4 or a good #5, that being said if we end up with 5D that are #4 or better that would be a pretty great D.

In the few games he played last year and early this season, Mailloux did flop on the ice playing goalie doing the breaststroke, usually while defending a two on one or some cross ice feeds... he doesnt do that nearly as much anymore. Another thing I've noticed is when defending at the blue line, he used to lunge at opposing forwards - either killing the play with the contact or missing and taking himself completely out of position. Again, he seems to have grown his game, letting the play come to him a bit more before committing himself.

He may not have taken a massive step forward defensively, but we can definitely see increments of progress.

The more I watch Fantilli and Carlsson, don’t see that franchise game changing potential of Bedard/Michkov.

Like it wouldn’t surprise me if Cristall or Smith end up better offensive players.

Defence is underrated this year. Gulyayev/Reinbacher/Dragicevic/Pellikka all have top pair upside.
None of these guys have top pair upside. Reinbacher could maybe play second fiddle a la Ekholm or maybe he has a furious development curve a la Guhle but I doubt it.

Dragicevic has offensive tools but Im unsure if he owns a brain.

Pellika is most likely a 2nd pair D.

Gulyalev is a 2nd rounder in most years that aren't horrible on D. I would have him 12th in 2022 for all Ds, maybe 13th depending on where i see Duda falling.

My litmus test is easy for Mailloux. Do I think he will be better than Kovacecic? I am good with the pick and we will see in the future what is ceiling will be.

I you get an NHL starter with the 31st pick - you are doing ok.

Are we sure hell be better than Kovacevic ? Also, Kovacevics probably not an everyday NHL player so..

Well that's an awfully low expectation of succeeding. Drafting 12 Jake Evans and 6 Kovacevic is not doing "ok". Isn't the goal to be the best anyways? Why settle for ok?

No one want to settle OK, but getting a NHLer is still better than nothing, considering the odd aren’t on our side to start with…

That's not low expectation - just the facts. Players picked in the lower third of the first round have about a 30% of playing in the NHL.

I agree, but I think picking a RHD would be reaching this year, compared to the forwards we may get. Our depth chart on D at the moment would not drastically be improved by taking a D from this draft, IMO.
Guhle-Barron
Hutson-Mailloux
Xhekaj-Harris
Engstrom

We need scoring forwards.
I don't agree with you. Sandin-Pellikka is rising and could be a good pick for us in the teens. We need a offensive RHD to settle our D squad.

Pellikka looks electric today. Poised, excellent hands, great transition ability. Much more impressive than Carlsson whos been underwhelming.

We have a big hole on the RD, the LD are fine

At LD, we have Guhle set on the 1st pair and Xhakaj set on the 3rd pair for the futur. We have Huston that could be a PP specialist on the 2nd pair and guys like Harris/Engstrom/Struble

On RD though, where extremely tin. We have what ? Barron that I like when we acquired and still think that he can become a #4 but after that..
We have
Barron
Mailloux

You can also expect one of the following three to slot into the 3rd pairing:
Kostenko
Sobolev
Tourigny

And if those three don't make it, what does it cost to get a 3rd pairing d-men.

It's not an overabundance but I also wouldn't say we're thin.

Welcome to the club. I said the same thing a few days ago. Didn't go over well.
