To be fair this is the last 5 drafts - 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022. I do think the scouts are doing a pretty decent job in the late rounds but there are a fair share of superbusts as well. Vilen and Malek going from also-rans to decent prospects has me more positive about the Devils' amateur scouting, but I'm still a little skeptical of some of what they are doing at the draft (esp lack of trades up/down)
he said a lot from players from the last 5 drafts have shown they aren’t nhl material, that’s to be determined on a lot of them, but i’d comfortably say that we have more nhl material from the later rounds of those drafts than most teams. most late round picks are not nhl material

Yes, and that's fair, I only see a few guys who are definite non-NHLers (Bernard, Hoelscher, Pakkila, Baumgartner, Pytlik) with some guys trending that way (Moynihan, Pasic, Brady, Shlaine, have to throw Hurtig in here too).

My gut says Fitz is looking to collect more 2nds & 3rds (ie trading Yegor and such) and will be watching the first round closely to see a player they like might be slipping and then move in on them.
Even if he doesn't trade up I think this is a great draft to have multiple picks in that 2nd-3rd round area, extremely deep in talent.

I am incredibly out of the loop on this draft class. Once the Devils started having significant success, I decided I wasn't going to do any type of deep dive this year and then when we dealt our 1st and 3rd rounders (Timo/Marino), I was even less likely to do it. I know the guys at the top for obvious reason but I'm nowhere near as familiar with the depth of the class as I have been classes in years prior. Now that we got that 3rd back from the Severson deal and potentially more from a Rango deal (and perhaps MBW, Graves, etc), I've got some vested interest again. I don't think I'll find the time to dive into the class prior to the draft and with the draft being mid-week rather than Friday-Saturday (wtf Bettman?), I'm probably just better off waiting until we make our actual picks before reading up on prospects at this point.

All that gobbledygook being said, is there any group of guys I should be looking at prior to our picks on day 2 that fit into our 2-3 range reasonably and come with some real upside?

ya i concur with this, as much as id always love finding a way back into round 1 and having more control over the pool we choose from, i think im gonna end up having guys ranked even into the 60s who i would theoretically have entertained taking in the 1st in another year. the mid range of my board in 2022 was a lot of kids i believed in but definitely didnt have as early targets

I think one of Augustine and Hrabel will make it to our 2nd round pick if we want to go the goalie route.

some swing for the fences Power Forwards and some good potential 3C players should be available in Stramel, Edstrom. Lind, Wahlberg,

uhh, what? just the last 4 drafts players from the 3rd round or later we have gritsyuk, sharangovich, schmid, daws, vilen, filmon, thompson, edwards and clarke - that’s pretty damn good nhl potential with some very high upside players from late rounds and plenty of tbd. our scouts have done an excellent job

our last 5 years of round 3 or later will probably have more success than lou’s first round drafting from 2005-2015
I'm not saying we haven't been drafting good. What I meant was alot of guys we either drafted or brought in via trades have kind of flamed out of the system. I'm talking guys like Talvitie , Walsh , Foote , even Thompson latley are all looking like they won't be impact players. The last few drafts we have drafted really well. Idk if you look back 4 ro 6 drafts you can see alot of players who amounted to nothing at the NHL level. It is what it is. Most teams are happy if they can get 2 NHLers from every draft. We have sooooo many good players in the system like you stated above. Our scouts have done a great job especially in the later rounds. Hopefully like I said we get a center (with good size) or a high end goalie this draft to help round out the system.

The problem with simple text is you can’t tell if someone is joking unless they say something patently ridiculous. Help us out here. You might be serious which spoils the fun.
In the past it has been talk in here about Nico being a 3C down the road so I thought that was getting ratcheted up again.

It’s just a trope at this point. Like the overused multiverse trope in a movie. Just enjoy the chuckle that Hischier is only a 3C. It was an argument made by impatient people who couldn’t foresee a player improving from 18-22. It always amazes me that some folks refuse to see anything but what is immediately in front of them. That seems like a limited way to go through life.
