Florida was at about 23% acceptance rate this year. That means the out of state kids probably only had a 15% or so admission rate. My middle one considered Ga Tech but it had a vibe that didn’t align with what he was looking for. Texas has to take something like the top 5% of all high school graduates in Texas and has few out of state spots available. I know one kid going there because he is buddies with Arch Manning. The whole thing is getting out of hand.
Damn!!! When I was applying a couple years ago Florida IIRC was around 35%. Not surprised it's rising in the ranks, though, it's an awesome school with awesome weather year round. Should invest in a hockey team though, hockey in Florida is booming and those fans down there are something else. I'm sure it would do great, especially with how successful ASU has been. Your nephew should have an awesome time there.

Definitely get the lack of appeal for GT, though. I didn't apply for similar reasons. The whole school didn't really give off the right vibe for me. UT Austin I've heard great things about, but that story is pretty wild. They're crazy about football though and I'm sure they would've done anything to get Arch to come.

Week away from the draft, some of the players I like that would be a good fit at 58 and 80.

Forwards: Juraj Pekarcik, Alex Ciernik, Nick Lardis, Coulson Pitre, Easton Cowan, Martin Misiak, Carey Terrance.

Defense: Aram Minnetian, Caden Price, Tanner Molendyk, Andrew Gibson, Theo Lindstein, Beau Akey.

Goalie: Trey Augustine, Jacob Fowler, Adam Gajan, Scott Ratzlaff

Stronger than usual talent pool than you'd expect to get in that area of the draft and a lot of players that fit the fast, mobile, attacking style the Devils want to employ.

The Juraj Pekarcik write up in Hockey Prospects is a treat lol

I don't know what the one scout saying he can't skate was watching, it's one of his best strengths. Pekarcik is one of my personal favorites, One of the youngest players in the draft class that will flash a ton of raw talent as a two-way power forward. I could see him being the Matthew Knies of this draft class.

Thanks for sharing that. Hopefully NJ can find a reasonably skilled forward with good mobility and some edge in the second round.

It was very good of @Lou Bloom to share that. :)

But the question remains : Where on earth is @StevenToddIves ?

It's been awhile since he's posted here.
He had said he's working on a new business and doing non-hockey writing if memory serves. He had popped in for a brief visit semi-recently. I'm guessing he will offer some thoughts after the draft to reflect on who is actually picked by NJ. It's been so long since the team has been competitive that we forget that for a good team the draft is a bit of an afterthought with players picked and stashed long term. Nobody picked for NJ is at all likely to make any NHL impact for at least three to five years, and that was true even if NJ had its own first round pick.

I released my top-32 raiting(not mock draft) so

I have specific view where I understand that part of the 4th group will be picked higher and some of them will be more succesfull players. But all of them have some worries or bust potential. I hope Devils will have late first or early second. Because there are a lot of talented players on this draft. It`s an irony that so talented draft is missed by Devils community.

Apparently, we have been in contact with goaltender Adam Gajan (from a Slovakian article, he did an interview and mentioned we’re interested. Interview available in his thread on the main prospects board).

I’d definitely take a flyer on him in the 4th round. I was impressed with him at the WJC.

Bob's final list/poll had Gajan at #60, so he might not be there for us at #80. Gajan also mentioned he had the most contact with Chicago who have a few picks in that range [51/55/67].

Also Bob's final ranking in moving pictures:

Yup, I saw Chicago mentioned in there, so we might not get him. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on him in Day 2.

If the team has Gajan way above the other goalies in that range, I could see why they would take him with the second round pick. But honestly, looking at where he has those goalies ranked (59, 60, 63) I'd feel really good about one of those guys being there at 80. So if we want a goalie, I'd still feel okay about waiting to 80 unless we have one ranked far more highly than the others and we do have a preference

The question is : How will he get there?
That’s the tricky part. It’s a long shot, but maybe he gets a late first in a deal around Sharangovich? Doubt it, but Fitz has mentioned that just because we don’t have a 1st now, it doesn’t mean we won’t, so I feel he might be eager to get in.

I do believe that if a Deal with Bratt never materialized the way it did, we would've gotten into the 1st round via trade involving Bratt (maybe even landing us smack in the middle of the 1st, dare I say it).

Thankfully, things worked out.

My thought is you package Blackwood, the rights to Graves, the rights to Wood, the rights to a bag of Doritos (the acquiring team's choice of flavor), and a Smoothie King coupon for a low first round pick. What, that's not enough? Ok, throw in the rights to Reilly Walsh, budding defensive superstar. No way a team can say no to that. It will be hard to move on from Blackwood but you have to give to get.

Yeah, he was asked in his interview if he was talking about Bratt specifically when he made the 1st round comment, and he said yeah, pretty much.

Definitely get the lack of appeal for GT, though. I didn't apply for similar reasons. The whole school didn't really give off the right vibe for me. Not to derail this thread too much, but curious what you didn't like about GT? Too laid back? Not laid back enough? Feel like they were selling you something inauthentic?

I ask because both my wife and I grew up in GT families and supporting GT athletics, had reasonable expectations of acceptance/got in, but chose not to apply/enroll for different reasons and wanted to see what your thoughts were.

So I looked at players who might be available around our 58th 2nd round pick and I mainly focused on
- Big Power forwards,
-Center that can be a 3C
- top tier goalie
-Shoot for the moon LD

Big power forward or 3C

Danny Nelson- Low chance
Anton Wahlberg-Medium chance
Charlie Stramel-Medium Chance
David Edstrom- Medium chance
Kalan Lind- good chance
Aydar Suniev - Good chance
Noel Nordh- to early?
Martin Misiak- to early?
Nico Myatovic- to early?

Goalies

Hrabel-Low chance
Augustine-Medium chance
Bjarnason- Medium chance
Gajan- High chance/to early?

I think one of Augustine and Bjarnason should be available

LD
Tristan Bertucci- Medium-High

6.'2 kid who is the Youngest player in the draft but already shot up the draft rankings this year. Definite potential to be a top 4 D. His negatives are
  • Needs to add bulk and strength to his lanky frame
  • Needs to up his pace to take it to the next level
  • Shot needs improvement
That is all fixable and we did good drafting young draft eligble players and lanky players in the recent past.

Edit- Added thehockeywriters.com prospect profiles to each player listed.
