A player who almost every reputable scouting service has in their top 8 all season has an almost "Zero Chance" of being picked at 5???

Once again, Benson's above average hockey intelligence is a very good fit for MSL's system.... Last year HUGO spent 2 of their first 4 picks on players on the smaller side... (Mesar and Hudson) so I don't see the preference for "size" in their drafting history.
Where were those two drafted? 25th and 62nd overall. Who did they draft at 1OA? Lat time I checked 5 is a lot closer to 1 than 25 or 62. They're not a drafting a smallish player who's just an average skater at 5 just because he has a very high compete level and some nice skills. But if you want to believe otherwise, that's your right. I'll say it again: there almost zero chance that we draft Benson at 5. There will be better options there than him (like MM, LC or WS). This is not the time to try and "outsmart" everyone. Just go off the "consensus" list with a pick that high. That's definitely not Benson at 5,

Who the f*** can claim with a straight face that Leonard is 40 pts winger or a 3rd liner? This is crazy talk. He has WAY more offensive talent than given credit for.
He's great but a little rich at 5 when there are potential 80-90 point players on the board. He opens up a lot of ice for Smith but Smith does the same thing for him with his passing game/drawing in defenders. Leonard might be the perfect third wheel with Suzuki/Caufield whereas Smith may be able to actually drive another line on his own.

So we went from Michkov, to Smith, to Benson, to Leonard, to Reinbacher, to Axel Sandin-Pellikka... By the time we reach the draft, we may have people argue that we should take Hrabal at #5.

I don’t think anyone says to draft Leonard instead of Smith. But if Smith isn’t there at 5 and they don’t want Michkov, he’s a legit target.

I honestly think Leonard is not only a complimentary player. I can see him becoming more than that, he has the tools and skills.

I've seen quite a few people have Leonard higher than Smith even though it's not the general consensus.

Leonard anything like Tkachuk he definitely guy we need at 5
He's not. On paper, Leonard is a better prospect than Tkachuk. Skating isn't even close, shot and playmaking are probably better as well. However, Tkachuk has something you can't teach and/or evaluate. Call it compete, intensity or clutch, who cares really. Not sure Leonard has that. Benson on the other hand...

Alright fellas, in the catastrophic scenario where Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson and Michkov are all gone at 5th, please persuade me about your 5th choice and why we should pick him.

Smith, Dvorsky, Reinbacher, Benson, whoever. Let's go!
My pick is Benson, but these 4 + Leonard are all in the same tier for me, so i'd leave it up to management.

I'll say this though: the general mindset has shifted very quickly from a "big 4" to a "big 5", and I don't agree with that. Overall, I don't think Smith belongs in that top group.

With Benson it's kind of disappointing that he's having a worse playoff run than last season. He's at 2 less goals and 4 less assists in the same amount of games played.

Now that we have a good idea of where each team is picking in the 1st-round, it's time for MHN's 1st-Round 2023 NHL Mock Draft.

When it comes to compete Leonard and Benson are unmatched, same tier

That's exactly my sentiment. He is by all accounts a PF which is very valuable. But at five we need to aim at a player who drives the bus and two of Michkov, Smith and Benson will be available. Also, from a need POV, the Habs have taken care of a PF type by drafting Slaf and trading for Heinenman. Then there is Luke Tuch even if he never becomes more than a good fourth liner.
However, if they trade down to 9, then there is a lot more sense in picking Leonard, particularly if Reinbacher is gone.

Leonard won’t be there at 9. At worst he’s gone at 7th to the flyers

Benson came back from an injury during the PO. I watched the last three games and the stats don't give him justice. He created a tonne of grade A chances each game and was just outstanding in the last game when the season was on the line. Unfortunately for him, Matt Savoie, who was the main beneficiary of Benson's great playmaking, could not buy a goal. And the other guy, #94 (McClennon ? ) was really not at that level. I remember last draft discussions included Savoie at some point and I am glad he was no longer an option where we ended up drafting.
I don't have a preferred pick at 5 since I have not seen a guy like Smith play aside from video clips and scouting reports, but if Benson is the pick, I will be happy. His IQ/processing of the game was on another level than anyone in the WHL final and the reports I read say that he is one of the smartest players in the draft, if not the smartest.
He definitely does.

Yes, it is very likely he won't be there at nine but if they do trade down, they will have to have a list of players they are happy to pick at 9 and I suspect it could include guys like Leonard, Reinbacher and Dvorsky.

Would love to have Leonard and one of Smith/Michkov. Sucks that the Panthers had that late season surge. We need some good luck for once. Like, getting a Markov in the 6th or something like that.
