HF Habs: 2023 NHL Draft part 2

If they stay healthy, I'd be shocked if they draft top 6 next year. They aren't a playoff team, but bottom 6? Nope

Saying that if everything goes well they'll still be out of the playoffs is saying the same thing as they'll likely be drafting top 10.

I had Nemec at 1 last year but wouldn't have been upset with Jiricek, because it was a year where it made sense to draft a dman high since we didn't have any potential PPG forwards available.

But this year? Top 5 is stacked with forward talent. It would be insane to pass up on one to get a dman, especially when top pairing dmen are found so much more easily later in the draft than PPG forwards.

For what it's worth, I have it

Bedard

Michkov

Fantilli
Carlsson

Smith

Dvorsky
Reinbacher
Leonard
Benson
Wood

We'll need to find another Beck to cover for all these flashy defensemen who can't play defense. :help:

I have my tiers color coded

So there's a top 1
2-4
Smith alone in 5.
Then the Reinbacher-Dvorsky cluster which are all very close.
Interesting that of the 7 listed at center, I wouldn't be surprised if Fantilli and Dvorsky become the only pure every game centers in the NHL. For some it will all depend on the composition of the NHL team's forward core.

We have Allen/Montembeault. In itself it basically guarentees bottom 10 finish.
You will be surprised how Montembeault has actually been a top 15 goaltender this season in the NHL.

Its true that Allen suck tho.

Unless Carlsson miraculously drops to us, there's not many forwards available at our spot in this draft who have the potential to impact the team as much as Reinbacher. Smith might be the only one.
That’s my issue with this draft. No Fantilli and likely no Leo.

Michkov isn’t a C, but he is a prize, and if Habs have opportunity, they might pass? Ugh.

So I look at Reinbacher as a player who can most positively impact the team’s future, moreso than alternatives at forward.

We need everything, including offense form the back end.
Bingo!

In year 2 of the rebuild, we have needs everywhere. Skilled players throughout the lineup will augment the offensive numbers of other skilled players in the lineup.

These playoffs are showing the importance of having high calibre 2-way dmen who can provide offense and play in all key situations.

It would be typical Habs to go Big Brain and draft the only d-man in the projected top10. Gotta be the smartest guys in the room.

I think I see the value in Reinbacher, some of you are much better scouts than I could ever be... but I don't like it from a top-down bird's eye view angle. Not at all. It doesn't sit right.
I hear you, but playing .500 hockey last fall into December carried a cost.

I think both are true. Most teams have multiple star forwards and have a really good D core (the exception for both are St-Louis - no star forwards and Pitts in 2007 - no good defensemen).

Ideally we want both and the argument I'm trying to make is that I prefer having more offense and lacking defense vs having really good defense at the expense of offense.

Also FWIW, I don't think Reinbacher is a #1. I think he becomes a really good defensively sound #2 like Guhle does. Great skaters, has size, contributes offensively, but is not the dynamic star defenseman that you would ideally want.

Pitts in 2007 had a good D, Letang was already a #2D anywhere.

It seems like in the playoffs having a 3-line team is better than having a 2-line team. St-Louis isn't really an exception to a trend. It's more that generally there is a cup finalist who has the stars AND the depth. Colorado last year for example, they had both. Lightning had both, etc.

But look at Dallas/Seattle/Vegas/Carolina etc. it seems like depth beats Toronto/Edmonton stars but thin builds.

I'm only betting on Carlsson being a center. Dvorsky and Fantilli with the next highest chance. Then Smith. And Leonard I think has minimal chances.

Colorado and Tampa literallt had the best D and best D squad in the league when they won.
They had really good D, but really good offense too.

Yeah overall I think the best teams that win just have really good depth everywhere. I guess the question is, does a core of Dach, Suzuki, Caufield, PLD, Slaf and Guhle, Hutson and Reinbacher win you the cup if you compliment the rest of the team with really good middle 6/middle 4 players?

For Smith I guess it depends on who drafts him. He probably becomes a C with Columbus or SJ, but has higher chances of playing W with the Habs.

Gonna be fun to look at those tier in a few years.

Nothing ever goes how we thought it would!
That's the thing, every year there's a consensus top whatever within the scouting services and the internet, and every year teams come in and go off the board and throw every list out of wack. Zadina is one that always comes to mind, he was the consensus 3rd pick and everybody was losing their minds that we might not pick him.

Yeah luckily, the fate of the prospect is not determined on draft day.

Obviously, its fun when we get thumbs up from all our favourite pundits, but that's also what happened in the 2012 draft and look where that got us...

I'd be pissed if we don't select Michkov, but regardless of who we pick at 5, I'm pretty sure we're gonna get a hell of a player.

After the Worlds, there's no way Carlsson can drop to 5. It would take a little miracle.

Probably not, but drafting is a weird thing.

Sometimes teams/scouts fall in love with players. It’s going to be interesting to see it unfold.
