Well one was a LW and the other is a RW. It’s also ignoring the fact they traded for a good young centre in the last draft and might even trade for another good young centre in this one.

We should not have an issue with drafting wingers when the top ones in the system before last draft were Farrell and Roy. Nothing special.

If Dvorsky and Leonard both hit, Dvorsky is a significantly more valuable asset that can also play on the wing. There’s not nearly enough of a gap between them (I actually prefer Dvorsky besides) to justify taking the winger. Michkov is another story.

I get it, but if you consider them the BPA...youre not gonna go out of your way to diversify your picks at the expense of upside.

No question, but that gap would need to be significant for me to roll the dice on an inherently less valuable asset.

Dvorsky is more of what we already have. Safe and boring.

There was no overlap at all from 5 to 6. Not a single scout who believed any of the top 5 should drop to 6.
A clear line in the sand.

Well, there was a clear distinction in Bob's article that with the uncertainty and risk around Michkov, that there were 3 names that teams would look at rather than Michkov.. that being Leonard, Dvorsky and Reinbacher.

So a clear message that after 7, Michkov becomes the clear BPA and the reward outweighs the risk.

He’s unlike any prospect in the Habs system or NHL team. Our top-6 is sorely lacking in strong two-way play. Not a boring player to watch either, very tenacious, very skilled, exceptional shot, and high end IQ. He’s shown that he can be the centrepiece of a line. Also plays a puck protection game that will complement our other top players very well.

He’s not a perfect prospect, but he’s also one of the youngest in the draft. I’d be more than happy to take him at 5 if Michkov/Carlsson/Smith isn’t an option.

Absolutely not. I love Moore, but there's no way you pass over Leonard and Reinbacher for Moore. Like none.

Trading back means Moore + another asset like a late first ? Moore ++ vs Leonard. I take Moore and another swing in the first because they're almost equal in value for me, and I both like them to be clear. Man I'd love to have you guys cristal ball that seems to write up Leonard as surefire more valuable than Moore on June 22 2023.

I agree with this.

Last year I was vocal that I wanted a center with the 1OA whether it was Wright or Cooley. Slaf wasn't my favorite pick the moment it happened, but then the trade for Dach went through and I was actually pretty happy with the pick. Walked away with a big potential unicorn LW and a big 21 yr old C.

This year I'm all for drafting BPA, whether they feel it's C,W, or D. For all we know HuGo have a trade in the works for Dubois or someone unexpected (Adam Boqvist would be interesting for example).

The guy they take @5 may not be my guy, but HuGo seem to have plans and are not afraid to wheel & deal if it fits how they want to build the team. I can't wait for next week!!

Dvorsky is fine, but I don't really see him as a good fit for us. I understand that in general C > W on the positional value chart but Dvorsky doesn't really track to me like he's gonna be some Danault tier super elite defensive C, so I don't really care about it too much as the offensive upside isn't crazy high either. Suzuki and Dach are 24 & 22 and both are perfectly fine as two-way Cs, and I don't think Dvorsky is more offensively skilled than they are. The Habs don't really need to target just any C at the draft table, they need players who are a meaningful tier above Suzuki and Dach in talent and/or overall game, so you'd plausibly be looking at Carlsson or Smith if they dropped somehow to actually upgrade at that position rather than getting Dvorsky who's ceiling is probably just another flavour of a 22-23 Suzuki/Dach tier player.

If we're worried about positional value the obvious play is Reinbacher who's in the same talent tier as Leonard and Dvorsky but plays a position where we actually have a roster hole. For instance, if we just assume Owen Beck busts, and that we don't draft/develop any additional two-way Cs for the next couple years, that's not really a problem. Suzuki and Dach are perfectly fine, Evans is fine at 4C, and it's not hard to get a two-way 3C if needed. Reinbacher gives us a meaningful capability (RD that can play on a matchup pair) that we don't have in the pool or on the roster right now.

There was always a chance but it seems very unlikely, just listen to Bob talk about the Michkov situation, I don't think he has any indication from the Canadiens organization they are interested in picking Michkov.
But wasn’t the question worded something like,” if Michkov gets past the five spot, what team could you see picking him?”

Getting Nadeau at #31 would be pretty rad. In a lot of ways he's like a lite Bedard, lots of offensive tools to develop with him. His shot alone could become a legit pro plus weapon.
Very intriguing prospect! High ceiling. Not sure about his floor.

He has a lot of momentum heading into the draft. His name's being brought up a lot as a sleeper. I have a feeling he won't be there at #31.

Oh he has next to no floor at all, he's a total homerun swing type. With our much improved development staff I think our odds are much better with a prospect like that than before though.
