From what I've seen Leonard is like if you shrunk Slafkovsky into a smaller frame and gave him better processing and ice mapping. Very similar style of creating offense, both powerful skaters with good puck protection and recovery. Both good shooters. Both would try to go through you if they couldn't go around you. I feel like Leonard is the most "Jeff Gorton" style player in this draft based on what I've seen from his drafting history and preference with team building.
As prospects, Leonard's processing is way better though. I also think his playmaking is generally underrated. Slaf has the size advantage obviously. As the opposing team in 4 years, if I had to face Slaf, Dach and Leonard together I'd probably sh*t my pants.

Let's forget about Michkov for a second

You're forced to choose between Smith and Leonard.

Leonard is a 30 - 30 guy who hits 80 points as his career high, but he brings everything else you'd want.

Smith is a 25 - 55 guy who hits 100 points in a season, but his lack of intensity and two- way play are evident.

Who do you take ?

Absolutely. Roster fit is a factor here but the BPA should be the top criterion. But I am also concerned that Smith might not be as effective on the wing with his skating and board game. There is no doubt in my mind that Galchnyuk was more effective at centre using his hands to create space but was more limited on the wing due to his very ordinary skating.
And yes, for the first time in ages the C position is in really good shape going forward, not a dire need anymore.
Another factor that HuGo will probably consider is that Will Smith creates the most in the slot. He thrives in the middle of the ice so potentially cutting off his most opportune positioning ont the ice might not bode well. It's also like with Smith, either you get him to play C where he's definitely the pick at 5 or you risk having him as a less effective winger going forward.

If Habs brass determine there are like 4 players in the same tier BPA wise and they're looking for someone dynamic enough to be able to play wing, Leonard is probably the right pick.

Depends on if you think Suzuki and Caufield are legit 1st liners and Dach is a C going forward. Cause I don't think Smith at wing will be as good as Leonard. I also think Leonard will be a more effective playoff performer. Remember absolutely no one thought Tkachuk would be competing for Hart's when he was drafted. If so, he would went 2 easily. Not perfect comparables but would you rather Matthews or Tkachuk is basically what you're asking

Leonard, because I expect him to be a more impactful playoff performer than Smith.

The difference being is that Leonard is doing this against smaller, weaker junior opponents while Slafkovsky has done it against grown men. I'll always be leery of drafting a "power forward" at/under 6ft.

If we're talking about a Gorton or Bobrov-style player... They've moved up twice for defenceman with size, skating, and offensive ability with lesser puck skills (Schneider, Miller), have a habit of reaching slightly for European players - Andersson ranked 13th (taken 7th) and Kravtsov 12th (taken 9th) in Mackenzie's final poll - and there's a clear team-building element in picking a two-way RD. I'm not sure I'd call any of their 1st round picks with the Rangers as one-way or physically weak players. I can definitely see Reinbacher.

I gotta go with Leonard

I have him as 5A
Smith as 5B

I just think his game translates way better in the pros and he's the type that you want in playoff runs. Smith's knocks are ones few players get over, the lazy back checkers and the players that tend to not play D rarely fix that aspect of their game considerably and those players often disappear come playoff times. All it takes is one coach that doesn't tolerate that and the motivation goes away, some careers fail literally due to that

The closer we get to the draft, the more inclined I'm leaning towards opting for Leonard over Smith if these are my 2 choices.

That's THE question Jimmy.
It is most likely also THE biggest question the habs have for that #5 spot truthfully

Another wrinkle is Hughes likes Smith, Smith likes Hughes
Leonard wants to play for a big market, will probably be gushing about MTL in the interview.

When the chips are down, it probably comes down to these 2 yeah

Here's Daniel Gee - An EP scout on my question re Leonard

Id go 1000% Michkov and can’t conceive of anyone passing on him unless you ND him for non hockey stuff.

As for the USNTP guys, I much prefer Smith over Leonard @5, but if the organization tells me Leonard’s the one making Smith look so good, I’d support the pick. But I don’t see it at all.

So basically Nuge or Jeff Skinner

Before this season RNH never even broke 70 points.

Skinner doesn't really hit, or back check

So, I'm at a loss for that choice.
Ya even though I said this want a perfect comparison, I said using hindsight, would you pick Matthews or Tkachuk in the 2016 draft

That's an assumption people make based on Kent coaching Smith, not the fact. Just because Kent knows the prospect better than others considered, it does not mean Smith will be selected even if they determine that there are better options. Besides, Kent is not the only decision maker, Gorton, Bobrov and the scouting team are all involved in that.

Lol.. thanks..

Yes, I don’t typically like selections of players that are based overwhelmingly on physical advantages over junior aged players (Fantilli? Dvorsky?). It’s not to say those advantages won’t persist at the NHL level, sometimes they do (Svechnikov) sometimes they don’t (Byfield, Turcotte). When it works out it’s usually because the player is actually a lot more skilled and intelligent than they were originally given credit for. Its just tough to predict. Leonard is a skilled, intelligent player in his own right, I’m not worried about his transition to the pros.

It sounds a little ‘Moneyball Scout Meeting’-ish but Leonard to me strikes me as one of those players you’re always seeing come up big in big moments and always surpassing expectations. Whereas Smith seems to me like he could be a guy people are always hoping for more from. He’s certainly skilled but we’ve only ever seen him play going downhill in a perfect scenario for him. He’s been exquisitely insulated. The same could be said for Leonard but I’m less worried about it.

Smith is IMO much more skilled offensively than Nudge. His offensive upside is higher. But Smith’s unfortunately still as soft as Nuge. And Nuge is better defensively.
Not sure I agree with that honestly, they actually have kind of similar profiles with their vision and IQ being high end traits, but I would argue Nuge is/was a better skater and definitely smarter and better defensively. Plus he stepped into the NHL in his d+1 and put up 52pts in 62 games. Not sure anybody would expect Smith to do the same.

Nuge is a better skater but he’s a low intensity player. Smith is more intense offensively.

Smith is a much better stickhandler and a lot more creative with the puck.

Smith is also a low intensity player, and I'm not entirely sure what 'more intense offensively' means to be honest. He still doesn't engage in battles in the O Zone.

Fair enough on the second points though.

Smith looks like he really wants to score goals and is using all his energy to do it, Nuge looks like he’s always in second gear. He isn’t but looks like it.
