After Oliver Moore
Speaking of which, I wouldn't be surprised if the team moved up in the draft. Gorton did it twice to nab Schneider and Miller. There's a video of him telling his scouts that he's willing to do it for a player his team is high on. Someone like Moore could be a player of that ilk, though theres no chance he'll be there in that 15-20 range where it's not impossibly hard to move up.

Question, let's say you have two lists of 5 players from this draft, and it turns out 8 years from now that the two lists look like this in hindsight.

List 1: 1 50 point player, 2 30 point forward, 1 top 4 d, a bust
List 2: 1 85 point player, 4 stone cold busts

Discuss.
I'd just like to point out there is no actual question in the post tho? Lol, I mean there's the word Question, but the question itself seems to be absent.

I see a drop in talent around 20 (let's say 23-25 with the usual reaches) so it would make sense to try to move up a bit. We already have tons of decent-to-good prospects, we need more quality than we need quantity in the system.

Buff and Pitt picks is sure on the table if the right price is there,
theses guys are competing next year .
But we don't have much of value to help these guys.
Maybe ; Anderson, Edmundson, Harris, Hoffman. (yes Hoffman is seen as still a decent player)
But not even sure they are interrested in these guys.

Which would you rather?
Lol, those are 2 very... very.. grim options that are also beyond unlikely (I know it's hypothetical)
I refuse to choose simply based on the fact the entire thought experiment is designed to sort of 'ingratiate' the notion of liking/wanting Reinbacher above anything else.

It would be a hell of a lot more fair of a choice if the other "option" wasn't merely "Bedard and 4 losers" since, you know, we can't sniff getting Bedard.. lol

It's really not. No one has outright chosen option 1, for instance.

This is my current top 10 with their high end player comparables if they meet their potential. I also used the old HF scale to score them (for those of you old enough to remember!)

Some of the comparables are based on my own observations mixed with some reading of prospect websites and who they are comparing them too.

Bedard - Crosby like impact - 9.5A
Michkov - Bure - 9.5C
Fantilli - Toews - 9B
Carlsson - Barkov - 9B
Smith - Modano - 8.5C
Benson - Marner - 8.5C
Reinbacher - McDonagh - 8B
Dvorsky - Horvat - 7.5B
Moore - Larkin - 7.5B
Leonard - Bjorkstand - 7.5B

Michkov is THE guy at 5. I want him more than anyone.

I find it odd Bedard has an A and Michkov a C when the latter is playing versus men in the second best league in the world and the former is dominating teens.

Perhaps reaching his highest upside projection? Like Bedard, Michkov could have played in the NHL next season and at the very least would score a bunch of PP goals. He’s as ready as any 1OA to make the jump.

If we want to find holes and concerns with the other Big4/5: I’m scared Fantilli could end up a glorified Taylor Hall. Not what I would want out of this draft. And I’m more concerned about Carlsson’s shot than his skating which will be fine IMO. He’d still be great but his shot could put a ceiling on his effectiveness. As for Bedard, he’s perfect. Nothing to add.

what do you guys think picking Tanner Molendyk with pick #31 ??
Like the way he skates , really mobile .

I've seen a lot of Molendyk in Saskatoon. He's a fine player, great skater, there's a bit more offensive potential than his points indicate... but #31 is just too high given the other potential picks on the board. Mid/Late 2nd is fine as I think he's a relatively safe pick.

I'm not sure about that. He has some deficiencies. He needs to get more strength/skating. He also needs to work on his play without the puck. I think some time in the KHL would help.

At this point I am convinced San Jose will take Michkov. It just makes too much sense for them. Fits their timeline and Grier will give himself a very long leash.

I think our pick is either Smith or Reinbacher. Will come down to their perception of Smith’s flaws, how much they think they can live with/correct them.
Noticed SJ has a truck load of picks and cap space, what would it cost to move up one if possible?

At this point I wish Michkov gets picked 4th, it would definitely lessen the blow. I just have a feeling they would go Leonard over Smith, which wouldn't be a bad decision imo. If they consider that Dach and Suzuki are both future top-6 Cs (they probably do) then they might prefer Leonard's profile as a winger.
Yes, I have the same feeling. The fit is a factor but also Smith's flaws despite his high upside might very well make him less attractive than Leonard that appears to have a more sure-fire profile. I personally would take Leonard over Smith if that's what it comes down to.

And if they get PLD, that's 3 potential C's. I see Smith maybe shifting to the wing like Kent Johnson anyways. Anyway they should go with BPA while considering roster construction

From what I've seen Leonard is like if you shrunk Slafkovsky into a smaller frame and gave him better processing and ice mapping. Very similar style of creating offense, both powerful skaters with good puck protection and recovery. Both good shooters. Both would try to go through you if they couldn't go around you. I feel like Leonard is the most "Jeff Gorton" style player in this draft based on what I've seen from his drafting history and preference with team building.

Absolutely. Roster fit is a factor here but the BPA should be the top criterion. But I am also concerned that Smith might not be as effective on the wing with his skating and board game. There is no doubt in my mind that Galchnyuk was more effective at centre using his hands to create space but was more limited on the wing due to his very ordinary skating.
And yes, for the first time in ages the C position is in really good shape going forward, not a dire need anymore.

Dvorsky seems like one of "gud pros" that Babcock obsesses over and can play in any situation.

Would be awesome if Columbus went off the board and took him.
