The Michkov fanboys will like it. He ranks Michkov's upside higher than Connor Bedard's.

Not that I would pay much attention to Corey Pronman anyways before seeing that.
Wouldn’t bet my life that Michkov couldn’t outpoint Bedard in the NHL. Unlikely but possible. They’re both deadly with their shot but their style is completely opposite. You know Bedard is coming at you and he beats you straight on. Michkov is elusive and hides, pops out of nowhere.

If you don't want Michkov at 5, trade down. There is absolutely no excuse not to maximize value. If you're not going to pick the obvious BPA at 5, then trade down to a spot where you will. I want either Washington's 8th with other picks/prospects, or Detroit's 9th + 17th.

Pick the player remaining from:
Benson, Reinbacher, Leonard, Dvorsky.

Then, get a chance to pick Wood/Moore/Danielson/Barlow/Heidt...
It just depends though if our scouting staff think they have a read on one of those players being great. If you think a player from that list is head and shoulders above the others, just grab him. If not, it would be great to get a late 1st.

Another option may be to trade the pick for Clayton Keller.

Like Kaprizov, Kucherov, Kane, Marchand, Point, Aho, Teravainen, Jarvis, Zuccarelo, Panarin, Marchessault, Gaudreau, Gourde, Fiala, Mangiapane, Konecny, Keller, Bratt, Tolvanen and Barabanov..

Most of those players are flat out smaller than Benson, don't have the tenacity Benson has, don't have the hands Benson has, nor the vision and yet, they thrive.

Benson isn't David Desharnais, and even so, if a guy like Desharnais can have almost 70 points in the NHL...
It's a good list. Plus MSL.

It's fine to have 1 or 2 players under 6'0 if insulated well but unless you have game breaking ability, I stand by my comment. I personally don't see Benson being at that level. Also he's not an elite skater. Small and very average at skating doesn't bode well in the nhl

If I were management, I wouldn't make decisions based on mediocre prospects like Sean Farrell and Mesar.

But, yeah, getting 24 year old Dubois this summer or next would add much needed size to outmr future core. If you add Dubois, you don't need to worry about size with this pick. #5 overall can be small if this is the future top 6:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Dubois - Dach - #5

Plus, in the bottom 6, we have 6 foot prospects like Heineman, Ylonen, and Roy, plus RHP who plays big and long shots Kapanen and Tuch.
Exactly. In fact, the Habs would have better size balance than Tampa had in their top 6 while winning Cups - it is too premature to compare the talent though. They had no one close to the size of Slaf, Duch or PLD in their top six.

Size should not be a deterrent in drafting players with elite attributes in general and in Habs' situation in particular. If they value other players higher based on their attributes package - such as a potential top pair RD, I could understand that. I could understand not wanting to take a risk on Michkov because of the political situation or, maybe they found an issue with his attitude.
Considering the young players already on the roster and the depth and quality of the prospect pool, the Habs are in a great position to select the BPA regardless of position or size. And Kent pretty much said so. This is not 2019 when Habs had a gaping hole in a key position and felt compelled to close it with a high pick.

Quick positives and interrogations of every potential pick at 5, imo:

Michkov: extremely high potential. Waiting is not a problem, but have to wonder how he produces this much with what he has... will he be able to score the same goals in the NHL?

Smith: insane vision and playmaking, offensive package is great. Can he improve skating/compete to create space and be a play driver in the NHL?

Reinbacher: at this point, easy to picture him as a top-3 D on a contender. How much can he impact offense though? That will determine whether he's a 1 or 3.

Leonard: complete package, bar the playmaking (for now), more offensily gifted than given credit for. Can he be a creator and driver or only a facilitator? Will battles and retrievals still be strengths when he's average-sized?

Benson: most complete forward in the draft, possibly smartest as well. I'm not worried about skating, but will the physical attributes follow the brain? If his shot doesn't beat goalies from distance, can he get close to the crease like he does in the W?

Dvorsky: has most of what you want from a reliable top-6C. Steps up in the biggest moments. Could help others produce by taking on a lot of work. Is he only a "gets you playoff wins" guy or can he consistently dominate? How much offense does he have in him? Why didn't it show in Allsvenskan?

All in all, I think these 6 are worthy of a top-5 pick in a generic draft year. I do have my favorites, and I would rank them like this:

Michkov

Benson

Leonard
Reinbacher
Smith
Dvorsky

Caufield and Benson will both be game breakers.

Benson is a much better skater than Caufield and much better than NHL average, his skating is very similar to Crosbys and hes the same size as him when he was drafted.

Is our current top 9 smallish?

Caufield - Suzuki - Monahan/Heineman
Slaf -Dach - Gurianov/Ylonen
RHP - Dvo - Anderson

I didn't include Gallagher, Armia, and Hoffman because you don't make decisons about who to draft for the future based on washed up vets that aren't part of the future.
Why don’t you include Gally and his 12 year contract but you include 2 players that aren’t/won’t be on team with Monahan/Guri?
You’re also forgetting Farrell and Mesar.

Get a feeling Gabe Perreault will be available at 31, even 37. The offensive awareness is truly off the charts, the skating is just atrocious.

Would you pick him?

I don't make any decisions about the 5th overall pick based on washed up vets and mediocre prospects, is the answer. You can't pass on a great talent based on those types of players.

Gally is a 4th liner at this point. So he's irrelevant to the top 6. I'd re-sign Monahan and Guri, so I mentioned them. But I think Heineman and Ylonen are closes to top 9 duties if you don't want to take Monahan and Guri into consideration. An they're not small - but I wouldn't take them into consideration when thinking of the 5th overall pick.

He’s more skilled in every thing than Leonard but his skating is fugly. They would need to be sure something can be done about it.

I completely disagree with you, I think Benson would be NHL average. And my prior point was Caufields size and although I didn't mention it, his skating, isn't as important as he doesn't have a pick dominant game. Also Crosby also had one of the best edges I've seen. Maybe Benson develops it but I just don't see it. We can agree to disagree, I just don't see Benson in the same tier as some players that the Habs have the chance to take
