Brzustiwicz is often ranked mid to late 2nd round. I think he's a good target for 37th pick. He skated well, acceptable size, right handed, moves the puck. He looked good in games I watched this year.

If I had to pick a 2nd or 3rd round defenseman that I think will break out offensively next year (a la Ty Nelson) I think Brzustiwicz.

Matthew Mania.

He’s after those guys.. I agree that I’m not sure Will Smith would be draft before Slaf but the top 4 has a step on Slaf
In fact its not really a top 4, Fantilli doesnt belong in the same tier as Bedard, only player who could challenge Bedard in this draft is Michkov, who will likely drop for non hockey related reasons.

My own projection of Slaf is a skilled PPG PF in his prime, which is as valuable as a top line center like Fantilli.

I had Slaf 7th last year, so while I'm sure he would go around there in this draft, I wouldn't select him there.

When I watch Slaf and I watch Wood, I know who I prefer, and it isn't Slaf.
To each their own. Wood struggled to skate with the Swedes at the U18, can you picture him trying to follow the pace at the WC against men?

I’ll give you Blues 10 OA with Wood still on the board you give me Slaf, everyone’s happy.

I don't believe his skating couldn't at least get to Mark Stone levels which is why it doesn't concern me as much.

I just don't think there's anything Slaf does better than Wood aside from skating.

Write Barb a blank cheque and reap the rewards.

Sounds good.

I look forward doing much more business together. :)

Matthew Mania.
A good candidate for my scenario as well. I saw more of Mania this year than Brzustiwicz. A difference between the players is Mania does his work with his skating whereas Brzustiwicz let's the puck do the work for him. I like both players but have a feeling Mania has a better chance of being there in the 3rd round than Brzustiwicz does.

Hehe, wont age well trust me. Im using the bookmark button much more lately, we will have a fun time to re-discuss those things eventually.
Looking forward to it. For what it's worth, my top 6 were

Nemec
Cooley
Jiricek
Wright
Mintyukov
Gauthier

And I had Hutson at 10

If you have a skating specialist telling me he‘s 100% sure no miss possible that Wood’s acceleration and skating can be fixed, Wood becomes a very interesting Top-10… Stone has the ugliest skating stride in the NHL but makes it work. Wood doesn’t look as ugly as Stone but his first couple of steps are a disaster. Beyond my pay grade where he can take it in the NHL.

The 3 names Suzuki brings up are one of the three players that will likely be there at 5. Generic statement or stating who the teams thinks they will get a chance to draft? Answer, I guess, comes June 28th..
They have a chance at Smith or Michkov.

Care to provide a link of your ranking? Its easy to rank Wright 4th or Hutson 10th now if you know what I mean...

I actually misremembered and had to go find it. Whiffed big on Lekkerimaki that high, and actually had Slaf 8th.

Hmm really? Wood could be great, but he potentially has a fatal flaw in his foot speed. I’d take Slaf quite easily and I was never the biggest Slaf fan- but think he’s getting underrated at this point due to a rough 18 year old season in the NHL.

The more I think about it, the more I think the difference between last years draft and this years draft is overrated. This year has Bedard and (potentially) Michkov, but last year was certainly the better draft defensively.

This is actually not half bad a snapshot after 1 year. There’s been much worse. You missed on Lekkerimaki but you have the 2Ds in the Top-4. Wright is still high but almost everyone had him top-2. And Kudos for Hutson.

I just feel more comfortable betting on Wood putting in the work to bring his skating up to bare minimum NHL standards (hard to tell if he is or not without doing the character interviews that teams have access to) than for Slaf to get smarter and more creative on the offensive side of things. Obviously I hope he does since he would be a great player to have if he hits his max potential, I just don't feel confident that he will.

Cheers, I was very high on Jiricek but didn't know how he'd be coming off injuries since that can change players. In retrospect I'd definitely move him ahead of Wright. Lek is just a brutal miss, but I can definitely get ahead of myself trying to find the next Pasta sometimes.

At the time of the draft, based on who was available where, I'd have gone Nemec-Hutson-Firkus-Fisher (but would have been praying for a trace up with 62 to take Buchelnikov instead).

Fisher hasn't exactly proven me right, but I still feel pretty decent about the other picks.

Seeing what Gabe Vilardi's done this year for the Kings in spite of missing a full year of development alleviated some of my concerns for Wood.

Still not in my top 10 mind you, but less risky than I originally believed for sure.
