As machinehead has pointed out, goalie is actually far less important. You need competence not greatness.
The importance of “greatness“ at a position as opposed to the importance of a position. if you have shitty goaltending you will go nowhere. No matter how great everyone else is. You can have shitty centers and still win games. You can argue whether having greatness at the position is a necessary advantage over having competence, but you can’t really argue that having competence in goal is not more necessary than having competence at center. If your goalie is trash, you are losing. Period.
But I take your meaning it may be harder to win without a great centerman than without a great goalie, as long as he’s ”competent”, depending on team circumstances.

Are we being connected to any college FA’s?
been wondering if they've engaged with Michael Gildon, who attended NYR prospect camp summer'19 , before his 4 season career at Ohio State, still just 21 (22 in June)

winger with size and energy but didn't score much in Big Ten

these scouting quotes from EP, but from back in '19
"He does his best work behind the opposing net and in the corners, often playing as the F1 to get in deep and apply pressure" McKeen's Hockey 2019
"He does a fine job in front of the net and he can snap some pucks upstairs" Hockeyprospect.com 2019

I think it is pretty safe to say no team is interested in a 21 year old forward with 7 goals and 28 points in 84 college goals

I think the dallas pick is going to end up with chicago bc we are winning the god damn cup.

Or at least thats my hope lol
Chicago would get nyr pick next year if nyr make it to ecf, no matter what we keep the better of nyr or Dallas ‘23 1st

There's a handful of players I keep seeing ranked all over the place that I'd love to grab with that Dallas pick. It'll be interesting to see how far that pick drops. Guys like Brindley, Perreault, Heidt, etc.. some have ranked in the 20s and higher/lower.

He might not be a sexy pick but Simashev makes a lot of sense for us. We tend to do well with these sorts of D-men. Very similar mold to the Skjei and K'Andre picks. LHD, big, mobile, good physical tools. The Devils took a chance on Mukhamadullin at 20th overall in 2020. The Canes took a similar sort of player that year in the 3rd. Alex Nikishin, absolutely dominated the KHL this year. Both of them are trending very well. The offense came over time with these players. Rankings have Simashev everywhere from the first to the 3rd round. Can you move down and still grab him? Mukhamadullin had an identical draft profile and ranking.. all it takes is one organization to think he's a first rounder.

We'll see who's still available with that pick.. if the higher tier guys fall off the board and it comes down to players like Stenberg, Gauthier's cousin, etc... I'd rather move down with the strong group that'll still be available. The 2nd round will be interesting. Lots of teams with multiple 2nds. You have players like Ziemmer, Dower Nilsson, Sawchyn, Čiernik, Whitelaw, Morin, etc... that have all been primarily ranked after the 1st. I think in other drafts there's a good chance some of them are sure fire 1st rounders. I dont think there's much of a gap between the end of the first compared to some of the guys that'll land in the 2nd. There's a handful of interesting players I think are worth watching for after the first 2 rounds as well.

Could Jay O’Brien be a good option? Rangers can use center depth in the organization.

100% yes, but I think he signs with a team that can offer top 9 minutes to him right away.

I'd pitch to the kid that he'll have every chance to make the team. Openings will be there if he can slide to RW. Think he projects best as a winger at the NHL level regardless.

Worth the risk. Drury better be in on this.

I'd even throw in guys like Musty and Ritchie.. I'd rather move down with the strong group that'll still be available. The 2nd round will be interesting. Lots of teams with multiple 2nds. The Devils took Mercer at 18 in that draft and were hoping that Braden Schneider would be there for them at 20 after Toronto surprised everyone by not taking Schneider and instead going with Amirov. The Rangers moved up though and took Schneider in front of them.....that's pretty much why the Devils settled for Mukhamadullin. Shakhir seems to be a very good prospect but I just don't know how he's going to fit on that team Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec coming along. They have a bunch of really good defense prospects but they also have a fairly strong defense corps. Not all of them are going to fit and I'm kind of thinking that Mukhamadullin before too long is going to be moved because there's nowhere for him to go with the Devils.

But anyway I like Simashev for the Rangers if he reaches us. No way he reaches the 3rd round. I'd say anywhere from about 20 to 45 with some chance that some team reaches and takes him even mid 1st round. The main thing for the Rangers is to get a good player.

Mukawhatever did get moved to SJ in the Timo Meier trade.

In a draft with so many ridiculous offensive talents, I'm almost dumbfounded at all the Simachev love.

I'll watch more tape, but in this draft he's more of a 2nd rd pick. Not much offense.

What is even our need? C, LW and D?

RW, LD, LW, RD, G, C in that order

I guess C is that far down the list because of Zib, Tro, Chytil putting up a lockdown on C.

We might get lucky with someone bound to drop.
We also have some slow developing C prospects who don't look bad 3-5 years out.

The problem is that we're not going to draft high enough to immediately fill our LD / RW need this year. So I'd rather just draft BPA

The 3-5 year projections for the roster indicate that the Rangers will still be deep at center at all levels. Likely Zib, Trochek are still around. Chytil may or may not be.

I like McConnell-Barker as a quintessential 3rd line option. Edstrom and Laba look like safe 4th line bets.

I think BMB is a middle 6 upside. 3rd line is fairly safe if we let him slowly develop.
I think Chytil will make the transition from a middle 6 to a top 6 as mika starts slowing down.
That'll let the rangers continue a strong center depth.
