WBC is sanctioned by MLB so the real question is, is the risk of getting injured in spring training that much less than the WBC? If not then who cares, if yes then something to discuss.
Yeah, MLB is a cosponsor so they're undoubtedly making a lot of money off of this. I'm sure the owners are all on board. I think it would take a spate of very serious injuries to make them reconsider their partnership and participation.WBC is sanctioned by MLB so the real question is, is the risk of getting injured in spring training that much less than the WBC? I’m using the same logic as met fans on the wbc on twitterI don't agree with banning players from participating in the WBC but this is such a ridiculous false equivalency.
You go through spring training with your team to get ready for your season with your team. There's always a risk of injury, that's not some f***ing revelation. But, you get injured in ST, it is what it is, you're injured while doing work for your employer.
The WBC is a totally separate event that has nothing to do with the individual MLB teams. Diaz got hurt doing his job but not for the guys paying his salary.
If LeBron James blew out his knee playing in a charity tournament right before the NBA season the Lakers would probably be pretty unhappy about it, as would their fans. If Patrick Mahomes tore up his shoulder playing flag football on an off day during camp, that would be a big deal.
A lot of players have clauses in their contracts that prevents them from doing that kind of stuff. Or other risky behaviors. The difference is this is an MLB-sanctioned event (which is why MLB's insurance is paying). But it being an MLB-sanctioned event doesn't make it less frustrating for his team or fans of the team, that he was hurt playing the sport but not with the team.
Again, I don't think players should be prevented from participating. I do understand however why some people feel that way. Trying to portray it like it's the same thing as saying "Ban spring training" is disingenuous at best and just stupid at worst.
Issue is pitchers and their arms. Very fickle and small changes in structure and ramp up/ramp down are huge. ST the pitchers are ramping up anyway so it’s a good time except that the innings matter more in the WBC and therefore are more taxing when looking at the season usage. Mid season would be ok too but this would result in significantly extra innings on the top pitchers. After the season, would be ok but some playoff players would miss out and wouldn’t be happy about it, plus the additional innings issue.Yeah, MLB is a cosponsor so they're undoubtedly making a lot of money off of this. The fact that Diaz got injured jumping up and down and not actually playing the game, for me, kind of also undermines the "keep them out" argument. It was a freak accident, as far as I'm concerned. Of course he wouldn't be in that situation if he were with the Mets in ST, but he could just as easily have slipped down the dugout stairs and torn his knee if he were in PSL.
I'd just prefer they move it to the end of the regular season. If hockey players can play the World Championship in May then baseball players can play the WBC in October in Miami or wherever.
You're nuts if you don't think the owners are going to work the pa over on this or alter future contracts so they are not guaranteed on the event of an injury at the WBC. The Mets just signed the best reliever in the league to 20m a year contract and he is now missing a full season for an injury not related to his job with the Mets. That's not going to fly with owners.Funny how people get mad that “ it’s all about the money” yet
I doubt it unless they change the cba
Not saying they don’t want th but it could lead to nasty cba negotiations. You're nuts if you don't think the owners are going to work the pa over on this or alter future contracts so they are not guaranteed on the event of an injury at the WBC. It's easy, if you get hurt in wbc your contract can be voided just as it can if you get hurt playing basketball or riding a motorcycle. Not saying they don’t want th but it could lead to nasty cba negotiations.
I would absolutely love this as the Opening Day Lineup
Didn’t the MLB themselves start the WBC?You're nuts if you don't think the owners are going to work the pa over on this or alter future contracts so they are not guaranteed on the event of an injury at the WBC. The money involved in MLB player salaries has changed substantially since the WBC was started.Didn’t the MLB themselves start the WBC?
No surprise that many of the foreign guys say winning the WBC matter more than a WS. Ohtani winning with his countrymen against the best of the world and being topic number one two and three all over Japan has got to be the greatest thrill for him. Playing for your country means being a part of something much bigger. Same with Olympics and the NHL, and the NHL has 0 stake in the Olympics whereas MLB is a partner of the WBC.Good luck getting players born outside of the US to sign a contract with a no WBC clause.
These guys, believe it or not, want to play in this tournament.
You'd have more luck with a no victory pile clause.
Gerrit Cole, 4 runs in 5 inningsThe Yankees stink lol
*Other team has based loaded, nobody out, tie game, bottom of the 9th*Gerrit Cole, 4 runs in 5 innings
No one:
Booney: His fastball looked consistently GREAT!
Cohen is more interested in the mets winning than the money.MLB is the co-creator of the WBC. If the players' contracts are fully insured against the risk of injury in the WBC, I don't think the owners care too much. If, for example, the Mets are still on the hook for a significant portion of Diaz's salary this season, I can see Cohen being annoyed.
