I guess it’s prudent we grabbed two C’s early last draft because it’s shaping up we are looking at a small winger (and potentially Russian) right now. I feel like a father who just found out his 16 year old son damaged the car. “I’m not upset. I’m just disappointed”. The goal this year was a top 3 pick without having to worry about a lottery. We knew other teams would tank hard. We had a full year to prepare. There are no excuses.

Agree hbk, imo, what a wasted year if we don’t get one of those monsters at the top of this incredible draft. I get it, building culture and identity are important.
Just listened to the Bill Armstrong interview on the Athletic podcast. BA views the rebuild in the 11-14 year range. With that in mind, and to your point, waiting on Michkov seems like less of a big deal. I don’t see them finishing lower than 4th = 6th with lottery luck. Maybe Will Smith, Dvo, Yager, Benson range. Of course, Veggie might pull them into the 10-13 range too.

This is going to suck as bad as it did when we were so close to getting our hands on McDavid or Eichel, only to fall short. Major let down. Not the end of the world, but it would(ve) been really nice.

To me this feels like the following season where we knew Matthews was just sitting there but Domi and Duclair were having such fun rookie seasons that we accepted being bad but not nearly bad enough. What made missing on Mcdavid/Eichel so painful was that that season was misery incarnate. Every game. It felt like we needed one of them to even become a team again. It doesn't really feel like that this year.

I'm still kinda hoping that they trade Chychrun, Ghost and Bjugstad for a bunch of assets and plummet after march though.. It's for the best.

We've got posters that won't embrace the tank, yet they still dream of Matthews signing here as a free agent on a whopper contract lol.

Signing Matthews to his next contract would be a disaster this early into a rebuild. He's going to get the biggest contract given to any NHL player since the cap began. You don't blow $13 million a season on a ten+ year term when half of that term is spent rebuilding, and not in contention. That's a terrible use of resources, and thankfully our GM is brighter than that. It will never happen. Matthews remains a Leaf or becomes a Ranger, Bruin or King.

We'd pay the most for what could be his declining years too.

Very good and very predictable.

Dude does not back off from his plan and clearly sees this as a very long-term play. 11-14 years for a rebuild, assuming he means from when he started as GM in 2020, so for Coyote fans factor the 6 years in front of his hire and we could be looking at a 20 year rebuild! Still hope I'm around in 2034 to see the fruits of Army's labor.

I think he meant from tear down to championship. And that’s starting without pieces. He mentioned Keller, Schmaltz, Chychrun etc as speeding up the timeline. Plus the record number of picks.

And both those players have led their teams to the promise land. One already traded. Both entering their eight season. It's a team sport so unless the team can surround their super star or stars, it's tough to win. I would love Bedard, but if we don't it's not the end of the world as you said.

So what? Winning a cup is so hard that only one team does it every year and the only thing harder than winning it is repeating. I'd still like to be able to watch exciting players of their caliber on my team on a regular basis, since a cup is huge longshot anyways lol.

I don't see where he gets 11-14 years from. It doesn't make sense. Not one player in our organization will be playing hockey by then. So it doesn't matter if we get Bedard.:)

I'm having fun watching our team this year without super stars. Sure it's fun watching McDavid, but it's more fun to win. You can always change teams.;) My son cheers for the winning teams only. He hates all the Arizona sports teams.

I could enjoy it more if the (few extra) wins were actually worth anything helpful to the team's future. I can't get too excited about winning what will amount to just enough games to end up 25th in the league instead of bottom 3. It's still a turd of a season, only with a lot less to show for it.

I haven’t put together a draft list just yet but in my head i have some names in that 5-8 range that i really like. Just nobody that i view as important to a rebuild as a Fantilli or Bedard. Even Carlson doesn’t have me uber excited like the first two names just yet.
