This thread is truly insane. It’s FIVE years old and look how many names on the first page alone were correctly called as future first round candidates. They’ve listed at least 10-15 thirteen year olds as future top prospects.

That's super impressive.

Something else that comes to mind is that I think that highlights how inaccessible the game is becoming. Getting the right coaching and development programs at an early age is super important, but man, that's such an early age you need to put a crapton of money into your kids sports. Feels like it's only going to get worse.

Yeah, that does suck. But for my family, it’s okay. My boys play house league only. And I’ve got no interest in letting them play on the travel teams. Hockey won’t dominate our lives like that. It’s a fun hobby. And house league is like beer league for kids. It’s healthy and wholesome and we all have a great time with it. And there’s really just no reason at all to ruin it by taking it so seriously.

Wait.:) You may have no interest, but if your kid has the love and talent for the game he will have many pulling his coat strings to play for a travel team.

Shhhhh….no! Haha.
That's how the kids and families in Canada have been doing it for decades. It's getting crazy expensive, but you meet many great families. It can get political, but that's all part of it, unfortunately.

I’ve got a buddy who played for Little Caesar’s who gave me a bit of a different perspective on it. That while it did dominate a season of the lives of the family, it also created some of their fondest memories and bonding time. He helped me wrap my mind around the concept of the time investment, at least.

To your point, nobody is going to help me understand the $$$ aspect, though. Haha.

Hockey is expensive to play at a high level, but I can tell you it was a great time for the kid, great time for the parents...at least for me anyway. Wouldn't have wanted anything different, lots of memories and lots of bonds with so many great families.

My nephew is in the circuit in Minnesota right now. He's in eighth grade and plays in what seems like weekly tournaments in addition to his school games. My sister doesn't work and is constantly on the road with this kid. It never ends.

As someone who grew up in similar footsteps as your friend I wholeheartedly agree. By the time I got to 15 I was sponsored and money wasn’t an issue anymore. I’m sure a lot of them are in similar situations depending on talent level but It’s not a sport most can afford that’s for sure. A lot of that can be experienced on a smaller scale. Quit at 17 because of burnout. Was tired of missing out on hanging with friend and dances etc. Everyone telling me to get better all the time and my body felt like shit despite my age. It’s a grind for sure and a lot of teammates I would say were forced into it because of talent or their parents wishes.

So I watched an absurd amount of games tonight...

Kantserov now has 32 in 25 in the MHL. He's gotten better, if anything. More dynamic. He's been scoring more himself and creating his own chances. He's flying under the radar pretty hard, could be a good pickup later, someone is going to take a chance on him. Despite the Russian factor he's going to be a prize for someone.

Dragicivec now has 35 in 25. Honestly..,I can't see him not being picked as the 1st D. He's elite offensively and not bad defensively. He has some things he needs to work on, but it's more of a game to game type of thing and not any one thing that sticks out.

Cristall is still lighting it up and I think is playing well. He's being put in more situations now, playing PK, PP, and ES. His minutes aren't that high (at least in Jr standards) but he's still at nearly a 2.0 PPG. One assist so far tonight after a bit of a slow start in the game, but he looked fine even when he wasn't scoring. Noticeably creating chances and progressing the play forward every time he gets the puck. Great vision and speed.

I watched Price in this game as well, but he didn't look that uh...great. Looked like he was trying to do too much and ended up giving the puck away for a goal when he got pushed off the puck. It did end up being called back for being offside, lucky for him. Got I believe a PP assist though later in the game and wasn't entirely bad either.

Bonk played today and had a solid game. He wasn't very noticeable, but in a good way. I didn't see any real mistakes. He's a big guy who was solid defensively. There weren't a lot of chances created from him but he did play well in the dzone and didn't play badly in the Ozone.

Bedard had 4 points I think this game but I didn't watch enough of him to really say anything, since he didn't play much of the 3rd period.

$700 twice a year for each boy for House League is enough for me. Haha. Especially with outgrowing equipment and extra coaching sessions for cash.

Give them the TJ Oshie treatment and get them into roller hockey as well. It will cut cost and they still get to play hockey.

I know we are not focused on the defenseman in this draft, but the opinions on them have been very interesting. The preseason buzz was around Cam Allen. Chris Peters ranked him #13 in November. Cory Pronman recently ranked Austrian David Reinbacher #9. Steve the Prospect Analyst says Beau Akey, OHL Barrie, is a complete defenseman and is ahead of Cam Allen. And as seen above, Dylan from EP Rinkside has Simashev ahead of Gulyayev. Certainly, Price, Dragicevic, Lindstein, and Strbak could jump. Or they could be there for the Coyotes 2nd rounder.

I really don't understand that russian rating at all. Kantserov last? Did he f*** his wife? I guess I have no idea who Dylan Griffing even is.

Sharakanov is one of the oldest players in the draft and is playing on a pretty decent team getting a lot of minutes. He's alright but nothing special. He never really had a ton of offensive capability before and doesn't excel at anything.

Same with Lutfullin. Not as old but he was getting fed minutes on the SKA B team and looked fine, so he got moved to the A team and is now stinking it up. The SKA B team sucks dick, so it's somewhat impressive he's managed that, but he has 3 in 12 for the A team which is stacked out the wazoo. He's a pure offensive scorer who can't do anything else. Not sure how he's hugely underrated.

Simashev vs Gulyayev is an interesting comparison considering they're pretty much polar opposite players, it's true that it's much harder to evaluate Simashev than it is Gulyayev, and both are good but...I honestly don't think either are going in the 1st. Someone will take a flyer on Gulyayev in the 1st/2nd and Simashev probably goes in the 3rd or maybe the 2nd.

Neither of them compares to Dragicevic or Allen.

My current D rankings would probably look like this

Dragicevic
Allen
Reinbacher
Price
Gulyayev/Lindstein/Akey
Simashev
Strbak

The top 3 are much better than anyone else and pretty close, Price could challenge, and Gulyayev/Lindstein/Akey are all fringe first rounders, Strbak I don't think is particularly good at all, and Simashev is super hard to judge, he rarely shows a ton of offensive prowess but is great at shutting down D, is probably NHL ready, and could develop into a great shutdown D, but I just don't see a team picking him early. His floor looks high but his ceiling looks low.

Dvo, have you seen this kid?

I have! He has a nice shot and is an offensive minded D-man who's playing in the SHL with men this year, although he's getting somewhat flip flopped in between the J20 and the SHL. I haven't focused on him a ton but he seems like a good PPQB. His skating isn't amazing, and his hockey IQ isn't amazing, his shot is good but he's missing two key components I think offensively minded D need- either 1) great skating or a good motor or 2) good hockey IQ to be in the right place at the right time.

His defense isn't bad, and he's fairly physical for his size, but right now I view him more as a potential 2nd round pick. That could change as we get farther in though.

Michkov hasn't played because his coach refuses to play him or send him back down. So he's sitting. Has said that he doesn't think he's physically mature enough and that his legs aren't thick enough and he should have the legs of MSL or Jagr. Says he's learned all he can at the Jr level but isn't ready for mens league.

Which is uh...something.

EDIT: To be fair he was also sick two weeks ish ago and Rothenberg said he wasn't 100%.

Getting paid KHL money to do squats? Nice!

J/K - can’t he go to the VHL? Or nah?

He absolutely could, the coach just doesn't want to send him down. He is supposedly playing tonight for the first time in (I think?) 8 games.

EDIT EDIT: Did not play tonight apparently.

He played in the VHL today (first game back), no points. Prospect Ilya Fedotov scored in the K against Brandon Gormley’s team Sochi. Brandon’s head coach is ex-Coyote Andrei Nazarov.
