How has Geekie been playing this year. Looking at stats only, he looks disappointing, not progressing over last year.

Well, if you are picked 3OA, expectations run high.
Geekie is okay. He has some really good games and some where i want more. Biggest issue he has is he’s not in the 1st PP and he doesn’t get the prime minutes that the small scorers on Winnipeg get. When he does get more ice time he looks better. His goals are way higher this year. Nash’s kid (his linemate) has stone hands.

He really, really reminds me of David Pastrnak. Like a lot. That crazy, stumbly bumbly through traffic to get an absolute rocket off out of nowhere. The unstoppable shot from middle distance. The ankle breaking. The insane edges and that wild deceptive release that they can completely hide from all eyes. Or just launch a rocket off a huge wind up. All of it. I feel like they have a very similar style.

Cory Pronman on todays The Athletic Hockey Show podcast said he just talked to a scout who said they would take Fantilli over Bedard. He said he thinks right now a quarter of the NHL teams would too.

This is just what we need. A toss up for Bedard/Fantilli at 1st and a toss up between Michkov/Carlsson at 3rd. That way when we pick 5th, we can all argue and fight and bicker about which of pile of the next ten wholly interchangeable names is the “best of the rest”.

Exactly, Coyotes just need to draft high. Definitely recommend listening to this episode for all, they talk about the draft and Macelli’s Calder hopes. Interesting they said his skating is what dropped him to round 4.

Pronman is kind of infamous for thinking good skaters are bad skaters, great skaters are okay skaters, and elite skaters are pretty decent. Im pretty sure he’d give McDavid a 7.6/10.

I guess we go with Yager or Dvorsky at #5. Maybe your guy Wood. I'll be pretty pissed if we tank this hard and end up picking 5th but it's not hard to do. Tankathon has us taking Bensen at #5. I don't see BA making that pick.

Will Smith seems a lot like Cooley for obvious reasons (and might be very different from Cooley for less obvious reasons, I wouldn't know).

Prospect update:

Bedard and Fantilli are still #1 and #2.

Michkov is really good, but I definitely place Carlsson above him now. Dvorsky and Michkov I think are equal.

But enough about the top guys.

Two guys I been watching a bunch in Russia, Kantserov and Simashev. Kantserov is playing in the MHL currently, he's a pretty shifty, crafty forward. He's small but definitely has 1st round skill. In a lot of ways, he's similar to Michkov. High IQ, great playmaking, goal scoring too. He pretty much has the whole offensive package.

Other guy I've watched is Simashev, who is much less flashy. He is however playing a lot of minutes already in the KHL and is extremely solid defensively, there's been limited upside offensively shown but the fact he rarely makes mistakes playing against men and has a great toolbox really impresses me.

I just got back from watching Geekie vs Bedard.

Benson (2G, 2A) was the star of the show. He's super smooth and fast. Very skilled. Always buzzing. I previously thought of him as JUST a small winger. Seeing him outshine Bedard (2A), who is no bigger than Benson, helped reshape my perspective on him.

Geekie (1G) is still the same enigma as last season. He floats a lot while reading the play, with a weird upright posture like he's waiting for a taxi. Then he snaps into action and looks like the star you'd expect him to be. He can thread sweet passes, his shot is wicked and his skating is great when his engage switch is on. I was hoping to see that switch on more often.

Oh, and Ryan Jankowski was there. I should have had a chat with him but I didn't.

Benson’s motor and two-way play separate him from many of the nifty little wingers who go early in the draft from piling up points, IMO. He was always better then at least one or the other of Savoie or Geekie in every ICE game I watched last season, and I watched a lot. He was often better than both.

Geekie, I fear, is going to take a lot of time and a lot of patience and I foresee many of us wanting to cut bait before he breaks out. He’s the kind of prospect teams get frustrated with, sell low on, and then watch become a star on another team.

BA needs to tank harder, he's leaving too much to chance and completely ignoring the Coyotes history for f***ing themselves out of high draft picks like it's what they were born to do!

Geekie was on my do not draft list...huge junior player playing on a dominant team, guilty of inconsistent, lazy play. Dylan Strome like (Geekie is a better skater).

Hope he finds that extra effort gear before we give up on him :sarcasm:

11 on my list.

I was prepared to have the Horvat vs Domi debate again with Savoie and Geekie.

By the end of the year I'd wager good money there's going to be conversation about Carlsson going first overall.

Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson. The team with the worse record is guaranteed a franchise center for years! Haven't seen that since the lottery was implemented. The team picking 3rd won't have to decide which of the 3 is the better center for their team.
