Michkov has elite talent. His KHL contract is for 2 more seasons. If they thought he would come over after that, I would take him at 6. 2 years in the KHL is not exactly terrible from a development perspective. It worked out fine for Kaprizov. I guess it comes down to the talent vs the risk of being able to bring him over.
It's actually 3 more years.
I see no risk of being able to bring him over. None.

The only prospect that puts you into being a much better team right now is Bedard. Even then that's debateable. Every other prospect in the draft is at least a year away, and most of them are probably 2-4, even those in the 1st round. There's a distinct possibility that even Fantilli and Carlsson are 2+ years away. Look at Byfield, Lafreniere, Hughes, Strome, Hayton, Kakko, Pool Party, and any number of other highly touted top 5 draft picks. If you pass on Michkov you're going to regret it. Period.

I wouldn't regret it for a femtosecond. We miss out on staggering talents all the time. All you can do is maximize what you have and have a good strategic plan moving forward. If you have a top five pick in the draft, you don't make an insanely risky bet with it. Because there are no guarantees. Ever.

You remember that scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, when the Holy Grail is sitting on that ledge as the world is falling apart around them? For us, drafting Michkov is like grabbing for the Grail with your fingertips slipping from their precarious purchase.

I must admit, I think all Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson provide immediate positive impact.

I think Bedard is capable of 70+ pts from day 1
I think Fantilli/Carlsson are going to get 50+ pts in their first seasons

I think all 4 including Michkov will be 100pt players as soon as their 3rd seasons. Bedard may very well do it his first season and the same with Michkov when he arrives, albeit 3yrs after his draft.

Thoughts? Overreaction from Grant, or justified?

Russia just passed electronic summons law that bars you from leaving the country. There's no recourse for it and you can't dodge it. You basically lose the right to any sort of free movement unless you somehow escape to the EU or US. The claimed reason is to make yearly conscription more organized but it's really about just suspending the rights of anyone they want arbitrarily.

They need to get Fedotov and Duda over ASAP.

With the passing away of his father, I could see Michkov wanting to leave Russia and starting "a new life". I was worried about the Russian factor, now I could see him asking for political asylum sooner than expected.

I don't think the NHL would allow that unless something has changed recently? The NHL has suspended relations with KHL but say they will continue to honor contracts as seen in article I quote below.

"The relationship between the NHL and the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) was reportedly terminated by the NHL on Monday amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The move comes just over a week after the NHL condemned Russia's invasion in a statement, suspending its relationships with Russian business partners and pausing NHL digital and social media site

“We will have only limited contractual information regarding players who are currently or last played in the KHL,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said on Monday, per the Associated Press.

The main fallout from the termination of the relationship will be an indefinite halt to communication between the two leagues. They will not exchange data on players under contract, update player contract databases, exchange free agent lists, or settle contract disputes. The NHL will, however, be honoring existing player contracts.

Several former NHL players already cancelled their KHL contracts of their own volition, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman."

Old article. That's why I said political asylum. That would make the circumstances different.

Like I said, unless things have changed. Political asylum changes nothing in regards to NHL honoring KHL contracts.

You might not regret it right now, but you'll regret it 4 or 5 years from now. Probably sooner.

Every draft pick is risky, that's not a point against drafting Michkov. Maximizing what you have? So then draft Michkov. Best player at the range we're at, period.

I'm not gonna address that video a ton, cause it's sensationalist bs and also solely their own interpretation - the text they're quoting doesn't even say what they're saying. But even if all of that is true, It's been how long since the war has been going on? Russia hasn't won, and likely won't win, the sanctions are heavily crushing Russia and it's not getting better for them. I highly doubt they have the ability to continue waging the war in any meaningful manner and I highly doubt that they'll be able to prevent people like Michkov (well off, already has NA connections) from totally leaving.

I'm full aware of how deceptive, corrupt, and controlling the Kremlin is. Still, I feel that podcast really goes overboard and blurs the lines of possible versus probable. Going too deep interpreting what things really mean at this point.

It'll be intereting to finally see how "risky" teams feel the Russians are, at the draft.

He makes smart, simple, high percentage plays with the puck from what I’ve seen. Which is nice. And he’s got a good shot. So definitely some fundamentals and some tools there. A question remains on how it all comes together.

What I like most is how he gaps up on dudes and just neutralizes them along the boards as the enter the zone. Love to see a kid who just erases entries like that. It’s not a skill anyone cares about in the top ten and it shouldn’t be. But it’s just a thing I personally enjoy seeing. Haha.
If he’s able to do it against the games elite, like a Doughty. Does it matter if his shot isn’t elite like Carlson, or can’t 200 foot saucer pass like a Karlsson? Reading the game at an elite level and being able to execute the right play is what the NHL is built on. Lidstrom was elite in this regard. Making the correct play through traffic. Simplify don’t complicate. Elite gap closure. To me couple that with being a right shot dman and an unrealized offensive potential. That’s absolutely top 10 material. In this draft perhaps not but there’s always a few dman going earlier than expected.

That’s because he’s the effing man. And my #3 for this draft. And all need to put immediate respect on his name.

Best skill+motor combo I think I’ve ever seen from a draft eligible.
I really need to see a full game out of this guy. None of this highlight nonsense.
