2023 Draft Discussion

I mean, we have a need for a 3rd pairing RHD. Not sure if that's worth a 2nd rounder.
???

Anton Johansson, Oscar Plandowski(bust), Antti Tuomisto, Gustav Berglund(bust), Wyatt Newpower(never was), Seth Barton(bust) are the only RHDs in the system. AnJo is the only one who has shown something promising and Tuomisto hasn't exactly set sky on fire but there might be some hope. There is need for more RHD prospects. Strbak is compared to Cernak and i could see Yzerman being interested.

Seider and Hronek are 21 and 25. Maybe draft one or two if they are clear BPAs as a potential flip but RHD is not a pressing organizational need to go out of our way to pursue them.

Chances that Seider and Hronek are able play all the games in next 15 years are slim to none, depth wins championships and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Second thing is the salary cap, if everything pans out Seider and Edvinsson(+others) will have massive contracts in the future. If Hronek keeps scoring like this, he wants to get paid sooner or later and Red Wings wont be able keep everyone. Replacements ain't easy to find so it's also important to keep all positions stacked. Cheap ELC deals are also key to success in salary cap era.

I get all that, but the need is not to the level where RHD should be a focal point. Our organizational depth at center is a much greater issue. If Kasper doesn't pan out Larkin is it as far as top 6 centers go. And that's assuming (which I am) that Larkin re-signs.

List of players that intrigue and am always looking for more information on (in alphabetical order):

Kevin Bicker; W, L - DEL, Mannheim U20

Jakub Dvorak; D, L - Extraliga, Bílí Tygři Liberec Men's

Lenni Hämeenaho; W, R - Liiga, Ässät

Martin Misiak; C, L - Extraliga, HC Nove Zamsky

Marek Rocak; D, R - Extraliga, HC Frýdek-Místek (loan)/HC Oceláři Třinec

Tom Willander; D, R - SHL J20, Rogle BK

Felix Nilsson; C/W, L - SHL J20, Rogle BK

Gotta love Elite Prospects tracker feature! I like Euro players because I trust the Wings' scouting process over there much more than NA, tbh.

The center depth is abysmal and it is the biggest organizational need, but highly unlikely that every pick will be used on centers. Since upcoming draft is a "center draft", good D prospects could fall.

I am pleased to announce that prolific wingers are once again a position of need in our prospect pool. The #10-20 range is, historically, a pretty good range to acquire talent on the wings.

Which wingers in our range are you stoked on this year? I'll throw Benson out as a personal early favorite, but unfortunately work has prevented me from watching as much amateur hockey as I'd like to this fall. Looking forward to keeping up with the more active posters in this thread.

Sale is one I really like. Also if his stock stays under the radar Andrew Cristall. The knock is that he's 5'9" and at best isn't a liability defensively, but he has the most points in the WHL other than that one kid in Regina. Dude can play.
Also I haven't watched him yet but I've heard some good things about Matthew Wood at Uconn. Big kid producing well in the NCAA. Teams are going to be watching him closely seeing if they can replicate a Jason Robertson pick since it's a copycat league.

Hey everyone, I was hoping to get out my preliminary list before the WJC. This ranking is created in part from a prospect model which uses logistical regression to create an expected value for prospects in the major leagues - USHL, CHL, EU Pro, and junior leagues.

I had only intended on the list being about 30 or so names long, but I found it difficult to cut it down so I expanded it to around 60. I really like the top end of this draft and while the forwards are rightfully getting a lot of talk there are a ton of intriguing defenceman in this draft. Dragicevic, Gulyayev, and Reinbacher are the clear top 3 D right now and I think if Gulyayev has been able to play at the Hlinka/U18s/WJC he'd be getting talk as a potential top 3 pick.

Don't focus too much on the order as I just placed players in their respective tiers. As I said above I really like this draft and I think as of now this draft has 1st round talent into the 6th tier and even the 7th.
