2023 Draft Discussion

Just drafted Oliver Moore, Tom Willander, Anton Wahlberg, David Edstrom, Dan Nelson, Juraj Pekarcik, Brady Cleveland Dylan MacKinnon, Konnor Smith, and Damian Clara. Missed a couple of guys I wanted, like Matt Mann but satisfied if we got this draft. I just cannot let Wahlberg or Edstrom go by. My fingers won’t allow me to click any other players

It is when the ranking is based entirely on feedback from NHL scouts, like is the case with McKenzie’s.
Direct quote from that ranking:
“Michkov may be the second-best prospect in the entire draft, maybe even the best, and given his contract status, I’m not even sure he’ll be taken in the top five picks in June,” said another NHL scout.

I hope we don't take Honzek, just better options to be had. Winged Wheel Podcast did a mock and had us taking Honzek and Simashev.
I died inside.
I will be surprised if Simashev available at 17, could be the best defansman from this draft. Hronek not Yzerman type of the pick, so don't worry

I'm pretty sure I have finalized my top 5 for pick #9 now. I also think that Willander, David Edstrom, Danil But, and Samuel Honzek have entered the race at pick #17 for the Wings.

Here is my pick #9 ranking:

1. Dalibor Dvorsky
2. Ryan Leonard
3. Oliver Moore
4. Nate Danielson (I've become a believer)
5. Zach Benson

If Zach Benson is on the board and Yzerman selects Honzek I will be done. Stop reaching for players that you think fit a certain mold and take the best talent. The Wings need goal scorers. Honzek isn't close to a top 10 talent. He will be at #17 all day long.

Just to play the devil's advocate, why is everyone so down with Leonard at 9, but Honzek is the end of the world?

Goal scoring. top line potential. Honzek feels like one of those middle six wingers and a the classic it might take time to grow into his body types. If we are gonna go that route I'd rather try Wood(but I don't unless pick 17).

I really haven't thought about Leonard at 9 because I've rarely seen him available at that spot. Dvorsky,Benson and Moore have been my options. My biggest problem is bypassing guys with superior skill because they're 2 to 3 inches shorter. Makes little sense to me. The name of the game is putting the puck in the net and the Wings don't have many that can do it. Center and goal scorers should be their targets.

Scouching's take on Dvorsky:

"With Dvorsky, the issues are somewhat similar to Yager, but lacking the dangerous shooting results, or shooting results at all. His edges and body weight shifts to turn and generate speed are great, but his skill level and pace of his game are lacklustre and results in low offensive transition involvement and lower than expected carrying results. His lack of footspeed and agility limits him defensively as well, and his lack of even strength scoring this year doesn't surprise me. Most players from HockeyAllsvenskan drafted extremely high in the draft score significantly more than Dvorsky, and if it were a case of the puck just not going in for him, I'd be clearly stating that, but I've never been as taken with his game as others, and I think there's a developmental runway ahead that will need to improve his problem solving, skill at high speeds, generating better speed, and becoming a better creator of offense for others in the offensive zone."

Sorry if this has been posted already, I just saw it:

Honestly, I see a player that accelerates at a high speed quickly, while knows how to finish on the breakaway. Larkin can finish most of the time on the breakaway and he is pretty fast as we all know. Could Benson be a slightly lower Larkin? His reported hockey IQ is quite high and it looks like he has good hands.

I think I may still prefer Dvorsky, only because he is bigger right now and that helps at winning the faceoffs as a center in the NHL, but I don't think I would be upset if I saw Benson show up after Yzerman says his name.

Of course, I would love it if we could trade for the 11OA and then pick both, but I guess beggers can't be choosers eh?

EDIT: I think I did see somewhere that they are comparing him to Marner. Not sure how much that is true, but if it is, that wouldn't be too bad?

Benson has shown a lot mroe skill than Larkin at the same age. He’s got elite hands and is probably the best pure playmaker in the draft. I’m really high on this kid and I’d be ecstatic with him at 9.

Don’t want Dvorsky tbqh. We need high end offense desperately. Benson or if somehow Michkov makes it to 9 then obviously him.

I agree we need the offense. I just see Dvorsky as a Kessler type player and I remember like a decade ago how much I would have loved to have Kessler on the wings around the time he was with Vancouver (anaheim not so much).

I am convinced, however, that Yzerman and Draper went to seattle(?) after the regular season to specifically watch Benson. I have absolutely no reason to believe this (reports wise), it just was a gut feeling. Again, I would just love it if we chose Dvorsky, traded for VAN 11OA with Myers (retained or not) for one of our seconds this year or next years BOS 1st and get Benson.

Then for 17th I would take literally any of these choices and be perfectly happy with no FOMO:
Danielson
Willander
ASP
Wood
Perrault
Moore (doubt he'd make it here right?)
Honzek
Barlow
Reinbacher

Don’t get the Dvorsky offensive/upside concerns or Dvorsky concerns in general.

I’ll take Benson at 9 with no issue, but people on here talk about him like he is as skilled as Marner and he’s not (in my opinion).

I think we have enough Kesler type guys up front with Larkin, Kasper, Mazur, Rasmussen. We’ve got the grit and hard work. We have no high end skill. Remember Kesler’s success was in large part because he played on teams with elite offensive guys like the Sedins. IMO all of our first 5 picks in this draft need to be on high potential swing for the fences types.

I think he’s got Marner upside. He doesn’t have the stick work, 1on1 ability or elite agility of Marner but his IQ is probably better than Marners at the time of the draft, he’s a similar or better passer, and he’s a harder worker/more tenacious.

Yeah, that is what I read (not on here) about Benson. Look, if Marner is his upside then I'm not going to complain if we choose him.

At this point, with the players that are projected to be available at 9 from the thousands of online publications out there, Dvorsky and/or Benson is pretty much what this team is needing. Either a big center with and easy 2nd line potential (we have larkin - kasper - then Dvorsky? We could juggle kasper/dvorsky anytime we wanted on the 2nd/3rd lines and be fine), OR a very skilled forward who can finish and can transition to a scoring winger if need be (probably prefer that anyways with his size but doesnt matter) who also has the a potential of marner or marner-lite.

I will be perfectly happy with either of them. Of course, I know I would choose Leonard/Mitchkov/Carlsson/Fantilli over both of them in a heartbeat, but realistically, none of them will be available.

Not sure if anyone else has seen this:

I honestly didn't think he would of gone to the draft, so this surprised me a bit.

EDIT: I mean jesus. Dude can literally fit a square peg in a circle whole if he wanted to.

Honestly, Benson has been the guy I've dug into most over the last few weeks and he's becoming my "realistic best case scenario" at 9. I love Perreault for his smarts and Yager for his shot, but Benson has passed them for me lately. With Benson if he can add a couple notches to his top speed you end up with Braden Point. If his hands kick up a couple notches, you get Marner or Giroux. If he grows an inch and puts on weight, he's a decent "can do it all 2W" type.

Quite sure that Top7 is locked to go at Top8.

There could be probably one reach. Then it's Wings time to pick.

1.Bedard
2.Michkov
3.Fantilli
4.Carlsson
5.Smith
6.Benson
7.Dvorsky
------------
Maybe some surprise pick (defenceman maybe?) before Dvorsky etc. but don't think there will be two.

Also the order could be anything after Bedard. But same Top7 guys will be gone before #9, at any order.

Just trade Zadina for him and let's move on.

Granlund is just great hockey mind to have around. He'll make others on the team better.

I’m all for loading Bustina onto the trade trebuchet but in a one for one involving Granlund? No thank you.

To Detroit
Granlund + Pitt 1st in 2024 if 2023 is off the table

To Pittsburgh
Jared McIsaac + Detroit’s 4th in 2024
