Cant find the exact quote anymore in that thread...odd.
I was able to stumble upon it. I was curious if there was a source or if it was recollection. But appreciate it!

Fair enough. I'll keep digging, thanks. My go to is always a highlight package and at least one full game of shifts for each player, but Honzek's was so underwhelming for me that I had to wonder if I just caught a bad game. He just drifted so much in my viewings. He's the first case of "plays bigger than he actually is" being a bad thing. He moves like a gangly 6'6 guy when he's only 6'4. To me, Wood, who is a half an inch shorter but went through a massive growth spurt recently, looks much more comfortable and coordinated playing as a big guy.Hmmm a bit hard to do as I have my own recordings of the games that I have personally seen, and I didn't really search on youtube either, but I invite you to do so and you might find something you like. A lot of amateur scouting comes down to luck too, because you're not watching each prospect 15+ times (maybe if it's your only hobby), I might have just been lucky and seen the best out of Honzek lol, but yeah he has all the tools (size, skating, shot, passing, hands...). I wonder how much of that package he'll be able to effectively transfer to the next level but I'm a big believer.
Yeah that's why amateur scouting is interesting if you're not watching many games for each prospect. For example, I've seen 4 games of Sudbury this season and Musty was extremely lazy and downright bad in all of them, so as a result I can't rank him very high because that's what I've seen. But when I look at the tools and the production, you gotta believe there's something there even though I haven't personally seen it. It's probably the same thing with Honzek if I'm being honest. I just happen to have caught amazing games from him so I probably have that bias that wants to rank him high as a result.Fair enough. I'll keep digging, thanks. As to be expected I tossed your list and HMs into your draft tool and dialed it up to highest. This is what it picked (I didn't select).Sup.
This is my top 100 for the 2023 draft. I have also added a list of 50 honorable mentions (in alphabetical order). I never spent as much time doing this before but since the Wings have been in a rebuild, I've slowly but surely started watching more prospects and this year I kind of went all-in and it was a fun process. It makes the draft days that much more fun as I have my opinions based on what I have watched. Friendly reminder that this is for fun, I will never claim to be the best or most knowledgable, nor will I claim that the Wings should have drafted "my guys". I do my own draft with the Wings picks as it goes along on draft day and it's just to be able to compare in a few years and see what I missed or what I did well. I do think when I look back on some of my opinions, some look good, some don't and that's just what you should always expect. But as I've had more and more opinions that were contrarian, some of them started to look realgud in retrospect which led me down this path of going straight to source and start watching prospects more and see how much I really know hehe. This is the most confident I've been on a draft list but that's because I've spent so much more time than any other year, so it's just natural. There are guys that I've ranked low that I'm scared of because I know they could explode and show things that I didn't exactly see and quickly make me look stupid but oh well
The honorable mentions are guys that I would pick from (I have my favourites) if my top 100 was entirely gone (unlikely). A lot of players in there are long shots that I prefer to give an extra year of development and see where they are in their D+1. They flashed some interesting stuff but might not be exactly at an NHL prospect level yet, but I would love if NHL teams ended drafting some of them as long term projects.

I like Cowan but he's a bit too vanilla for me right now but I like how he plays at faster pace. For example in the playoffs, he had no trouble adjusting to the faster game and his quick decision-making was evident and I liked that a lot. The problem that I have with him is that I have trouble identifying what's his real upside at the NHL level. As it stands, I only see a potential bottom 6 energy guy with some skill and awesome forechecking abilities but he's also 5'10 which is no great for that "role". Even though I have him a bit low, I do think there's some nice offensive potential that he has displayed but a lot of it felt driven by Winterton when I watched him.Supposedly Cowan is racing up teams draft lists. No source for any of this but some see him as a possible late 1st/early 2nd pick instead of a 3rd/4th rounder now.
Here's a draft write up that I thought was pretty decent. This guy clearly spent some time watching this class and has some pretty good info/ write ups. And it's free to browse. I found it interesting that he has some pretty similar rankings to the Black Book for a decent amount of his top 32.

To me, he's first or second in skill [in the draft]. But when it comes to character, to attitude to his teammates, coaching staff, management, fans - the man has now fallen very low in the eyes of all the scouts, all the managers. It has nothing to do with the tragedy.
Information about the player is collected - how he talks to his partners, how he talks to the coaches, how he behaves off the ice. There are a lot of nuances that could be revealed. I can show you the correspondence when I wanted to meet with him and, as a scout, ask him some questions and do an interview, how he responds.
I've never seen such disrespect in my life for other people.
What universe do you see this happening in? Cause it ain’t this one we live in
It's going to be fascinating to see how far he falls, and how long the team that selects him takes to get him here.Michkov wont come over until mid 2026, IF he comes over. He is Russia's next big thing and is absolutely adored there. High risk, a pass for me.
My guess is that he still goes top 8, but not 2nd or 3rd overall. If I was to take a bet, 6 or 7.It's going to be fascinating to see how far he falls, and how long the team that selects him takes to get him here.
Might as well start hoping that Bedard falls to nine if that's how things are shaping up.What universe do you see this happening in? Cause it ain’t this one we live in
He hasn't been expected to go top 3 for a year. Top 5 would be surprising at this point and I'm starting to think he'll be outside the top 10.My guess is that he still goes top 8, but not 2nd or 3rd overall. If I was to take a bet, 6 or 7.
He was #2 on McKenzie’s pre-season ranking in September and was widely considered to be the #2 player to start the season. He hasn't been expected to go top 3 for a year. Top 5 would be surprising at this point and I'm starting to think he'll be outside the top 10.
Wasn’t Reinbacher the one who nonbed interviews? I could swear I read Montreal, among other teams, were not impressed. They said he lacked any fire or personality
What if the Wings gobble up another first from either Vancouver or Pittsburgh in a cap clear scenario? Would you use that extra first of Michkov? I certainly would.
Didn't Vancouver just alleviate their cap situation by buying out Oliver Ekman Larson? What if the Wings gobble up another first from either Vancouver or Pittsburgh in a cap clear scenario? Would you use that extra first of Michkov? I certainly would.
This probably hinges on what sort of moves they want to make in free agency. They still have a couple of bad contracts on the book and they do have EP to sign after this season. Having said that, I pretty much agree with you, the desperation that might have led them to trading pick 14 is likely gone.Didn't Vancouver just alleviate their cap situation by buying out Oliver Ekman Larson?
