Apples to oranges. ASP can’t do a damn thing as good as Makar or Fox now, and I doubt he ever will. He’s closer to Boqvist, Lliljegren or Lundqvist.
I saw an interview with Button in which he compares ASP to Sergei Zubov. Said he doesn't have any really standout skill, but somehow controls the game extremely well when he's on the ice.

But I want forwards, not defensemen.

(Bedard, Fantilli, Smith, Carlsson, Leonard, Reinbacher, Dvorsky, Michkov)

9. Detroit Red Wings (Pick by Wheeler):Zach Benson, LW, Winnipeg

I think the Red Wings strongly consider centers Nate Danielson, Oliver Moore and Brayden Yager here, but Benson’s skill-competitiveness combo has earned him a lot of fans and fits with what Steve Yzerman and co. are typically looking for.

17. Detroit Red Wings (Pick by Wheeler): Colby Barlow, LW, Owen Sound

After adding the small-but-determined playmaking of Benson at No. 9, the Red Wings add another determined winger at No. 17 with Barlow, whose scoring and strength should mesh with his new teammate down the line.

Athletic did a 2 round mock that dropped this morning. The wings got Benson and Barlow in the first (I would be really happy with that) and followed that up with Hunter Brewkewitzc from Kitchener, Anton Wahlberg Malmo, and Theo Lindstein Brynas. The very next pick was Lind who is a favourite of mine so I wouldnt love that. But all this draft talk is going to be kinda dumb when half these picks get traded anyways

I mean Boqvist was on pace for over 40 points this year, on a bad team, at 22 years old. ASP might not have a norris trophy or two by 25 years old but lets not act like these guys youre comparing him to are finished products either. I doubt the wings take a guy his size on D, but that doesnt mean the talent isnt there to be a really solid NHL player

What do you like so much about ASP? If you're taking him over Reinbacher, why?
I do have him over Reinbacher. I like his skating, IQ, passing, and hands over him for sure. To me ASP looks like a PP1 guy. He walks the line really well and has good shot placement. He needs to get stronger no doubt, but it’s not like he avoids battles in the D zone. I think he has that small Dman bite that separates the 15min pp specialist from the 22min 5v5 and pp guy. Absolute best case scenario I see a Dan Boyle, but he’s got some Vince Dunn in him too

If Wings takes Wood , Reinbacher, Benson or Leonard at 9 I expect them to trade up and get Danielson , 17+ second

And if he goes the way of Grigorenko?

sounds about as productive as worrying about if Bedard would become the next Abdelkader or if Fantilli will decide he would rather quit hockey to become the sun on teletubbies or worrying about if this happens to Carlsson:

Last two top shelf Russian Red Wing prospects were in car accidents with catastrophic leg injuries. They drive over there about as well as they walk near ponds and open windows.

if Michkov goes at 8 I will post once a week for the next 20 years about how Yzerman should be fired for not trading up
Honestly, I have to imagine that Washington isn't going to be willing to move that pick except for a big overpay. They'd be drooling at the chance to get the next big Russian star. If Michkov is there at 7, we have to leapfrog Washington.

If we can’t trade up for Michkov or Carlsson (obviously very unlikely), my pick at 9 now is Benson. I think there’s a great chance he’s available there with Leonard/Dvorsky/Reinbacher going before him. And I think Benson will be a superstar TBH. He has it all and if he was 6’0” he might go top 3.

yeah that's what I meant

getting all the way to 8 would require him to pass through multiple opportunities to trade up before arriving there

totally different story than if he went at 4 or 5 where the opportunity very well might not even exist

I’d be happy with that. So many intriguing prospects in the top 17 it’s hard to go wrong.

If both Carlson and Michkov are still there at 4, the phones should be ringing. Not at all costs, but definitely perform due diligence. And again at 5 overall.
