WC: 2023 Czech Team

So am I allowed to criticize Hrubec, or is it still too small of sample size? :sarcasm:

6 allowed goals, of which 1 was an own goal and 2 were poor goals a goalie at this level shouldn't let in. He did have that one decent save in OT though, not like he let in an awful rebound moments later...

I don't want Jalonen around for the home WHC next year. You just know Jordan and Hrubec would be shoo-ins and I don't think I can endure through another tournament with this comedy duo.

I really got the suspicion Hrubec is the type of goalie which is looking really good in practice, has good numbers throughout season, but then fails in the key games. Repeatedly. If we go through to the QF, which we should (quite probably 6 point from the remaining 4 games should be enough, and two of the games are vs. Slovenia and Norway), Hrubec definitely shouldn't be the starter.

With Jalonen: The team had a crisis the last year as well, maybe even deeper crisis, and managed to get out of it. So let's see.

I showed Hrubec's stats internationally for us going back to 2014.... his sub .900 performance is normal for the NT. He was sub .900 last night with a few questionable goals against. Rebound control, at this level, is a real problem for him! He's also right around his usual sub .900 level. This is what he is internationally. A .900 goalie for us. Always has been. And it's almost always a bad bounce and bad luck. He let in some nasty stinkers at the Olympics too.

Eg. he makes a save against Slovakia and then knocks his own rebound into his own net. He makes a save in OT yesterday but the rebound lands right in the crease and is a goal. He is consistently having the puck fly out of his glove causing a second shot. Heck, the first shot of the game was from the red line and that rebound got away from him too! He is a great option as a 3. Not saying he's a bad goalie but he's a 31 year old Journeyman. I have no idea what we are doing here. Stezka would've been a much better choice. So would Langhammer. Vejmleka is an OBVIOUS choice. I was hoping he was maybe injured but they had him on the bench as backup which means he can play.

Last year we had Hertl, Hronek, Vejmeka, Kampf, Vrana, Krejci, Pasta and Cervus. This year we have Cervus, Chytil, nothing even close to a Hronek replacement and Hrubec as our starter. Sobotka hit 20 minutes yesterday. We are playing this like it is an EHT.

Kari is really reminding me of Hadamczak... he picks his guys, picks his goalies and sticks to them while omitting stars and the better goalie. This is Jakub Stepanek all over again. Or not bringing Mysak to the U18. Or bringing Barinka to a best on best over a guy like Jan Hejda.

So how many Extraliga guys (for all the nations) does everyone think will be in the Top 30 scoring for this tourney? Top goalie? Top d?

There must be close to 30 of them in the tourney. Sedlak returned from NHL and will be up there. Who else?

But its a PLAN, everything goes according to PLAN lol, starting to be alergic on this word.

Its hard if after yesterday Kari or guys like Jordan says it wasnt a bad game, no selfreflextion what so ever.

I wrote earlier that I dont mind Kari, but with every game and stupid decision its less and less true.

As Wooren said, I dont want him around for next WCH, I dont want to see us playing at home with the EHT squad. No thanks.

I'm really curious how this tourney ends for us.

So far it's not been fun... Sobotka with over 20minutes last game... Smejkal with a broken face, hrubec with a .500 record against Slovakia and Latvia, Chytil injured, jiricek injured, cervus injured, chlapik injured, benching vlejmelka, the first (purposeful) 3 goalie rotation I've ever heard of.

Super chances were almost even against Latvia. All good. We need more forechecking! Goalies are on orct. Super.

It is possible than Jalonen is a bit too old.

Remember that Alois Hadamczik, despite always having certain communication issues with some players, used to be a very good hockey expert in his prime time (ca. 2000-2008). It was him who gave the first national team chance to players like Tomáš Rolinek and Petr Čáslava. Nobody was even thinking about them as national team players at that time, but Hadamczik saw the potential in them. He won the impressive silver medal in 2006, with the team which was considered an underdog. The team was performing very good in 2008 under him, and lost the QF game vs. star-stacked Sweden in the OT due to an unlucky bounce but after a high quality game. Patrik Eliáš, for example, was always talking with a big respect about Hadamczik's expertise. But in Sochi 2014, it was too apparent Hadamczik was already an old, burnt out coach, unable to catch on the latest trends in strategy and coaching approach, relying on outdated methods and overaged veteran players. Yet another example: Luděk Bukač, great hockey expert, but unable to find a way of communication with young NHL stars, which led to the disaster at the 1996 World Cup.

Coaches are often great for some generation of players and methods, but as they are turning old, they simply can't quite follow the innovation and have difficulties to communicate with younger players. This happened to many coaches before. Maybe Jalonen is the next in the line. I don't know, don't want to underestimate him. But he is looking a bit tired to me, both on the bench and in communication with the media.

looks like Kari is setting a new tradition to give away at least one game to the underdogs every year :D

Except this year there is no Pasta to save us. It was basically he, who won us that bronze last year, not the coach.
Now I'm reading Grubauer and Drai (!!!) are still a possibility for Germany. Yikes.

Wonder if Germany would bring in Grubauer, fly him over and then bench him for the first 3 games?lol

I was afraid of it. I think Germans and Swiss are really feeling an exceptional chance to bring medal or even win the gold for the first time this year, so everyone will want to come play for them.

If you look at it. Czechs, Finns and Swedes all have weaker lineups this year. USA brought again much of a university team, which of course play great as always, but at the same time, they are playable as always. Canada, eventhough they are again biggest adept for gold, also brought a weaker squad then in the last years.

I think that German, and mostly Swiss guys are sensing that and all want to come, cause they could very well be part of a historic team and historic succes.

In all that I find really strange that Stutzle didnt came to play for Germans. Dont know if there was some injury or personal reasons.

But they are really relevant this year, both of them, and I kinda sense Swiss for gold this year I cant help myself lol

What I don't get? Why didn't the Czechs smell the same thing for Gold? Weaker tourney and some great players were available. This was a golden chance for us too!

But yes, Swiss and Germans will be a nightmare. Also, the crossover just got worse!

Sweden got much stronger
Germany is getting much stronger
Finland was already strong
US are what they are

Germany has some digging to do.. I think they lost all 3 games by 1 goal. Toss in Drai/Grubauer and those 1 goal games might go the other way.

Quite plausible, given that their best players are both not injured and actually willing to play.

and wanted by the coach (eg. Vejmelka and Vrana were avialable, hell, one of them is in Latvia walking around taking selfies and eating Shwarma)

Bitching aside.. here are some positives:

'

We are in a great spot for now and control our destiny (last 2 games against Swiss and Canada)

Latvia is a good nation to lose too because they probably aren't in the QF mix after only get 2 points of us and Slovakia. That one may not bite us in the ass at all.

Our big guns are cooking! Keep in mind that Chytil is probably our biggest gun and he's not playing. So we definitely have some forwards scoring.

Averaging over 3 goals a game!

One of the least penalized teams in the tourney!

It's a day off but Chytil and Chlapik were on the ice. Chlapik does NOT have a concussion. So we may see him again. Chytil is in pain but looks likely to return too!

FOUR D have a goal. 6 have a point. Much better than I expected from this particular group.

10 forwards have a point. Only ones still looking are my fav Kaut, Vozelnik and Chlapik. Kaut and Vozelnik have both had great looks, they just need to bury one and get going before being sent back to the pressbox!

We have one of the top 5 goalies in the tournament and he's very well rested!

We are the defending Bronze champs!

This article shows everything about our team and weird goalie selections. And I hate Orct more and more ... Orct is responsible for everything (with goalies) and blind Kari trust him (I realy don't know why) ...

"Zdeněk Orct vymýšlí hlavní plán s gólmany a já s ním obvykle souhlasím. Takže on rozhoduje o svém úseku a já za to pak přebírám zodpovědnost," vysvětlil Jalonen s tím, že má při rozhodování poslední slovo.

„Neříkám Orimu (Orctovi), kdo bude chytat, to říká on mně.

Já ho musím podporovat a věřit tomu, co řekne. A zatím se mi jeho plány líbí, protože máme dvě vítězství a jednu porážku v prodloužení. Teď máme ovšem před sebou ještě čtyři utkání."

The whole staff needs to be rebuilt. I dont like single one of them right now.

Havlat is doing poor job at convincing NHL players and is lying in the media with those "everyone wants to come bs" and so on.

Orct is absolutelly stupid if he plays Hrubec over Vejmelka.

Erat is absolutelly useless and only have two plays in PP. Pass to Kubalik > shoot > get a shot blocked and pass to Kostalek on blue > shoot > get shot blocked.

Zabransky I dont even know what he does (he has D under his wings or something? ) , but I just generally dont like him.

Jalonen is stupid for trusting Orct and letting him have final say, plus I dont like his all euro approach and dont like a lot of his weird decisions he did towards team selection. Also his style is oudated.

Honestly I would just fire all of them and made a completely new coaching staff for the next WCH in Prague.

But who instead of Kari? Maybe Rulik, or maybe crazy idea, but I would really like a canadian/us coach (but not Hanlon lol).

Part of me thinks Kari is a bit full of shit and giving fake answers. He does have the final say and you'd think a guy that smart would clearly see that this is getting silly. The fact every reporter is asking him might actually spark a conversation with his good friend Orct. Specifically:

'Hey Zdenek, what the f*** are you doing?'

There are 7 games and 3 goalies and Orct has a masterplan.lmao You could legitimately leave that decision up to a poll on Idnes Sport and it'd do better than him.

For me it's Rulik but I don't mind if they stick with Jalonen for one more year. I don't currently like what he is doing but he is a good coach.

Obviously, I'd prefer Rulik with a much more effective Havlat and seeing some of 'my favourite players' (which also happen to be better than the ones playing... well, except for Kaut).

There are two Czech coaches who could possibly take the job if Jalonen quits: Rulík and Varaďa. I don't see any other legit candidate.
