I'm not sure I'd take Cristall in the top 20 myself but YMMV. The upside is there to be a star but the downside is awful and I don't know if you'd get a guy that would step up in the playoffs or when it gets tough. He seems junior-y in approach and I'd tend to opt for more firmness and directness overall. Whenever even draft-eligibles have such a stark effectiveness on vs. off the puck you wonder how it projects. Strength and engagement can be added but, I mean, it's a hard excuse even for draft-eligibles if they really wanted to train and execute differently. Ultimately I'm not sure Lardis or Brindley won't end up just as good all-around as risers in the 15-20 range.

If a team is desperate for skill it makes sense to invest at some point and shoot for the upside (after the top 15 it becomes more pronounced). Play him with other skilled players and provide enough structure around him and maybe it works. If he plays with more of a competitive attitude in all facets at the U18s he may win me over some but I still probably won't know how high to rank him. Perreault isn't all that different either. Incredibly productive, bigger than Cristall. There's a lot of pure skilled upside in an ideal environment but is he a lead guy at the NHL level? Probably not and for more of a finesse type that becomes tough to project/rank given that they're likely top sixers or nothing.

Any feel for Barlow? Reads like a goal-scoring winger.
Made some comments a few days ago. Mostly I think he'd be fine but I like Leonard a bit more. More explosive, a little craftier. If the Caps can finish 8th they should be able to do no worse than Leonard...count me in if so. I might even take him over Benson due to being bigger and more physical. Somewhat like Gauthier last season, albeit without the potential to play center, he may be a late riser.

I saw a comparison of Leonard to McLeod that seems worrisome, no?

Michael? Ryan? Cody? :sarcasm: Don't really see the comparisons with any of them. He's a potential 40 goal scoring power winger I think. I don't doubt some teams may have him ranked the best player on the NTDP. He's bigger than Smith & Moore and more physical. Could be a strong spiritual successor to Oshie, with a similar skill set only more amped up.

I should have been more specific. Ryan.

If we're slotted 8-10 after the lottery, I think they trade it.
Only realistic guys I’d be non hesitant to trade the pick for are Quinn Hughes or EP40. The 8th or 9th pick is worth about 3x a pick in the 20s and they don’t throw those around, they got 3 more years of Sandin for a pick in the late 20s. I wouldn‘t be psyched about Debrincat or Lindholm, for example, and they didn’t trade it for Chychrun who’s in that range.

Fair enough, though a possible top-10 pick (i.e. at the TDL) isn't as valuable as a guaranteed #8 post-lottery drawing.

I hope your wrong
Why though? Do any of the guys who figure to be available at 8 or 9 change the calculus for this team during Ovie's final years? I doubt it. On the other hand, packaging it with Kuzy and whatever, could land a young but proven impact forward. My dream scenario, outside of them winning the lottery, is that the rumors about Elias Pettersson are true and Mac could work a deal. That would give Van two picks likely in the top 10 which they could flip for a higher pick or other players.

Yes they do. The guys at 8 will be a year away from the scouting I’m reading. We’re talking about a guy who would immediately be our highest prospect. The top of this class is strong and we haven’t picked this high in ages. Would I be open to a trade? Sure but it would have to blow me away, I would go into the draft expecting to pick.
