Worth remembering that last draft Craig Button got all of one correct mock draft ranking in the first round.

Mentioning without comment... seems there are potentially significant, rapidly evolving, internal political/military events developing in Russia today, and they may continue to evolve rapidly over the next few days.

Just mentioning so all are aware. I believe discussion here won't be allowed.

Don’t worry, Prigozhin’s a Caps scout. It’s all part of the plan to get Michkov to drop to 8.

Barlow, from Salem’s Lot? That dude is an absolute monster. He’d control the locker room in no time, and would shred all of twabby’s aging curves.

I’ll see myself out…

The Salems Lot reference is pure class.

Not big on Barlow unless he’s Cam Neely or Bill Guerin.

Again, furthering my belief that any chance to secure Michkov and we should make it happen.

Well if it goes according to that ranking... Anaheim gets MM at 2 OA... but we get Will Smith at 8 OA. Not a bad consolation prize...

Right D is a weakness in the Caps depth chart. Reinbacher is considered the best D-man in the draft, so if no Michkov then Reinbacher is nice 2ndary option.
Drafting for need is Bush League. It's why the Commanders are perennially mediocre.

You're looking for star contributors. Always go BPA. Would you rather have Andrei Svechnikov or Brett Pesce (a Reinbacher comp)

It is? Carlson, Jensen, and TVR all under contract for 3 years plus Iorio and Chesley in the minors seems pretty decent to me. If that's a weakness then every other position is an even bigger weakness!

I think you are severly underestimating how good Brett Pesce is, or was.

I don't want them to draft Reinbacher for the same reasons I'd rather them not draft Dvorsky. Both are high floor very safe 2nd tier players. Dvorsky screams 2nd line C and Reinbacher is middle pair and some PP if you ask me. If Michkov is gone by 8 or they can't move up to get him I want them to go after someone a bit more dynamic.

Caps fans, question from a Preds fan here: If Michkov fell to you (seems unlikely but…) is there any scenario you see that has the Caps trading the pick? Presumably it would be a “win now” package of all star talent that fits your
cap, maybe plus picks/prospects? Or is it all Michkov all the way?

Nah, I don't think they're that short sighted about where this is all going and Michkov is a huge get for the franchise.

Svechnikov doesn't play defense and he has injury issues! Pesce is a top 4 d-man!

Reinbacher would be the biggest impact d-man to come in since John Carlson.

I’m somewhat back to not trading up for Michkov. Let him fall, dare someone else to select him. If he does get picked, Benson is almost certainly gonna be there for us. He profiles in a similar way. Good production, great motor, gets inside. I’d be pretty happy with him at 8

There could be some great options at 8 OA if Michkov goes 2/3/4 and trading up is universally unrealistic. All it takes is someone take Dvorsky, and one or two teams grabbing a D, or a team going off the board ahead of us and we can have more options than expected.

We very well could come out of this with a core star who is a great Cap for over a decade. That's good!!

Within reason I agree. But scouts often talk about tiers of players and I've got to believe they have Michkov rated in that very top tier. That's what tends to trigger movement up/down. Benson probably doesn't quite fall in that same group. He'd be a solid consolation prize with intriguing upside allowing them to keep other assets. But I've got to believe they'll keep trying to move up because of the perceived value difference. Even with solid depth this year I doubt moving the 40th pick to walk away with Michkov stops them. (Or perhaps more.)

Arizona seems to be trying to add pieces to their roster and between Dvorsky or Reinbacher potentially they could still land one at 8. For them to add an asset that helps in future deals and potentially get the same player as at 6 should be a win-win. (Unless they've got one of the two significantly ahead and don't want to miss out.) Arizona isn't exactly asset poor with picks but to stockpile more for deals and perhaps get the same player could make all kinds of sense for them. They could also then package 38+40 to move back into the early-ish 20's.
