GDT: 2023 Caps NHL Draft Thread

We may actually want to consider this even IF Michkov is gone say at 4 OA, and we are heavily in on one of Leonard/Benson, and Arizona wants one of the top 2 D at 8 0A.

All comes down to how strongly Mahoney and staff value those two if they are there.

I’d consider trading up for Leonard if Michkov is off the board and he’s sitting there at 6.

He’d be a core piece for the next decade.

I do have Leonard pegged to Montreal or Arizona.

If it goes Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith, Leonard and then Arizonas guy is gone, they’d probably move down and just take a Benson (who plays with Geekie) or get Reinbacher/Dvorsky. So i see it as a match for sure.

Fun tool/time killer from the Detroit board: Realgud draft simulator

With Bobby Mac's rankings:
8 (1). Zach Benson (LW)
40 (2). Lukas Dragicevic (RD)
104 (4). Jacob Fowler (G)
136 (5). Zeb Forsfjall (C)
200 (7). Rodwin Dionicio (LD)

With My Cozen Dylan's mock draft rankings (which accidentally turned out to be the Seattle draft):
8 (1). Zach Benson, LW, Winnipeg (WHL)
40 (2). Gracyn Sawchyn, C, Seattle (WHL)
104 (4). Scott Ratzlaff, G, Seattle (WHL)
136 (5). Beckett Hendrickson, C, USA NTDP (USHL)
200 (7). Jeremy Hanzel, LHD, Seattle (WHL)

Unfortunately the Caps don't have as much to play around with as other teams. Being a Bears fan way more than Caps I don't know you guys' specific wants so well, I went for the BPA approach more than anything (big fan of Benson though, Michkov was off the board both times).

Michkov mocked to Philly here. Some interesting notes tying Arizona to Dvorsky, if not Leonard. Have to think at 6, if they stay put, it'll be one or the other. Washington at 8 got Dvorsky. The consensus top 8 seems increasingly firm and makes you wonder that if a team at 5/6/7 were to trade back will they want to move further back than 8? Do they have a Benson/Wood/Perreault/Moore/Barlow/ASP in that same tier group? I can see the argument best for Benson but depending on size/fit questions it may be a tough ask. That difference alone could be crucial.

Also some brief talk whether trading the pick at 8 makes sense if Michkov is gone. Dvorsky did recently sign a two-year SHL contract and you wonder what they could get for the pick vs., say, Dvorsky/Reinbacher. FWIW my gut says they trade 8+40 to insure they get Michkov at 7. I've got it as MTL-Leonard, ARI-Dvorsky, WSH-Michkov, PHI-Reinbacher. Philly is doing their due diligence on MM and rightly so at least as a bluff. But I'd be a bit surprised if they end up serious about it. Time will tell.

Re: TVR on the left, that could be the case. But it still opens up a D spot and isn't ideal. Not to get too Oatesian but D on their off-side can make exits trickier.

I have no doubt the caps will try to trade up but either way they will get a quality player at 8.

That hot steak in December (?) might come back to bite them in the ass. Much like the Wizards mid season hot streak hurt them

OK, then because they want an asset we have, and we start with an increased ask as part of the price discovery process. Better?

Sure, but it feels like you might think we're the only ones bidding. Detroit, for example, might want to leapfrog us. Make no mistake, in this hypothetical the Yotes are by far the ones in the power position. They have what we want. There are plenty of Fehervarys around the league, and other similar and superior assets.

That doesn't mean we don't get to value what we have. Fever is good and 8OA is a lot. But it's not hard to beat that package, especially if Michkov is everything he's cracked up to be.

, especially if Michkov is everything he's cracked up to be.

All reasonable and good points.

Thing is if Michkov is everything he's cracked up to be then Arizona is kinda dumb to pass on him, just so they can get Fever and a D at 8 OA, that they can very possibly draft at 12. They simply take Michkov at 6 OA.

I guess it's clear I am in the camp that would only offer a limited amount to move up to get him, as opposed to the camp that is eager to offer 2 or 3 First Round picks plus some of our top prospects.

Where I draw the line on diminishing returns is less than many others. We shall see how GMBM feels.

Its going to be a shit show here until pick 4-8 GMBM will have about 30 min real time to make huge franchise changing decisions, I hope we have talked about the price for #5 and 6 if our player is still there.

Only one poster said multiple 1st round picks and he also has said he doesnt care about the caps post Ovie era.

And none of us in here have the knowledge that GMBM does... maybe we know he can actually be here next year- and will do so only for us. In that case maybe we make a much more aggressive offer.

There was no source on the tweet today that started all the speculation. Could even just be click bait, and we have already decided we are going to pass on him (i doubt it, but who knows). I would expect we wouldn't get transparency, given GMBMs close-to-the-vest negotiating style.

Enough of our individual lines in the sand. We aren't going to call the shots. We all want the best for the team.

What will GMBM actually do Is the real question . How hard will he go after a move up or how hard ass negotiator will he be? Does he call the Montreal and Arizona's bluff? He might think they are bluffing, and we actually could get Michkov to fall to us.

It's all is going to be very interesting. And how much of the decision-making will be on the fly. What if someone falls unexpectedly. Going to be fascinating.

I think GMBM is doing his due diligence but doubtful they have assets to move up IMO.

In his mock draft video The Hockey Guy thinks Caps might choose Colby Barlow. He's also done a recent video on him here:

Says he's a power forward / Cam Neely type of player.

Thoughts?

Sportsnet/Bukala has Barlow ranked at 9th. Good Hockey IQ and scoring prowess...

Button giving Arizona Wood over Leonard is where it loses much of any merit. Similarly, Leonard is not not going top 10.

I think Barlow goes around mid-first. He's closer to Danielson, Honzek and But for me than Benson, Reinbacher, Moore and Wood.

Yeah count me in with Arizona. If MM is still avaivable obviously. If not, no need to trade up.

8th + 40th + Fehervary/Alexeyev + Mantha
For
6th + Schmaltz

Would be pretty cool blockbuster trade
