Manson is an important piece of the D group and complements Girard well. He’s worth it. I wish they had kept EJ
EJ is not worth 3 mill or even 2 mill anymore. He’s pretty much nearing end of his career. I’d only be willing to sign him to a mill maybe at most.

Edit: actually not even that. Unfortunately EJ wouldn’t even be worth a mill. He’s too slow now and doesn’t bring anything to the table anymore other than leadership

The Avs couldn't afford to match Buffalo's offer, so it makes sense, but I bet EJ would have been willing to take less to stay in Colorado. He didn't want to leave.

Even if Malinski makes the team, having EJ as 7D would have been a nice luxury to have. He'd be even more important if Malinski doesn't look ready.

He can still play in the NHL, and although I'm not as tough on MacDermid as others, there's a pretty big difference between him and EJ. But at the price he got in UFA it makes sense to move on.

Some people prefer JJ over EJ now days, goes to show you how much game EJ has left in him

I would disagree with those people. JJ has a better first few steps, which makes him better in transition, and perhaps against a team like Seattle, but EJ is better both defensively and offensively IMO.

You can see it in the way teams value how much they're worth as well.

JJ's last four contracts have been for $1.15M with NYR, $750k with the Avs, $950k with Chicago, and the league minimum $775k with the Avs again.

EJ just got 4x that from Buffalo for $3.25M, and said another team courted him pretty hard, which suggests they either offered as much or more.

I rather not have either JJ or EJ. Avs need a better #6. Can’t rely on JJ, Hunt or MacDermid

EJ is completely, utterly, undoubtedly washed. Avs could use another RD but they made the correct decision not bringing him back at any price.

Peter Holland lol
Absolutely nothing wrong with him giving it a shot mate. If he's rejuvenated, and primed. What better team to bounce back in. Pushes guys like Myers and Ohlusson. Would be on league minimums (and has 200+ games under his belt on other teams bottom 2 lines).

That said, out of Myers, Holland, and others, I'm still thinking Chris Wagner snags that 4C spot for us.

Just hoping we can get a 3RW.

I thought I saw something about Chris Wagner sustaining a fairly big injury shortly after he signed.

Is there a third option?

Not based on the statement I was referring to.

Also gets forgotten that EJ came back early from another broken leg last year, and then got hit with a puck in the same spot in the broken leg his first game back.

Yeah I get it. I loved EJ but it was time to move on from him. I wish they moved on from JJ too, to be honest. Someone younger ideally. MacDermid is fine as a 14th forward or 9th D. Now he’s likely 7th D and he will be playing more than we would like.

Wagner only played two NHL games in the last two years. His three years prior to that in Boston were pretty awful. He has fallen off a cliff since his brief stint here.

I think it made total sense to move on because they couldn't afford more than maybe $1M. But both EJ and JJ can still play fine as 5/6D IMO. Even more so as 7/8D which one probably would have. I just think expectations have always been too high here for the 5/6/7D role. These are always imperfect defenseman.

Since our alternatives at 7/8D are MacDermid and Hunt, then putting aside the cap issue, bringing EJ back for depth only would have been a good thing. Even more so if Malinksi doesn't look ready.

I have a feeling Malinski will make the team though, so it's mostly about the 7/8D role which is less of a concern because they may be able to fill that role with waivers or a small trade. Maybe even bring EJ back at 50% at the deadline though it sounds like he's expecting to stay there.

Yeah. Would EJ have accepted a 7D roll? I’m not so sure. All I know is we can’t be playing Makar and Toews as much as we had to last year.

5&6D just need to be serviceable and have Bednar’s trust. I actually was fine with Andreas Englund. Im probably in the minority but I would have rather kept him over JJ.

Edit: I think you are right that CMac is probably really counting on Malinski making the team.
