Why would you think that? Toews wasn't even signed yet and Byram's struggles were unknown. If anything he was untouchable last summer but now he could be available.
I meant summer coming up because Gauthier doesn't help now and the Avs need a C not a W.

Many believe Gauthier can be a center (FTR I am not in that camp), and he plays center currently in college (and played center at WJC).
Flyers fans were seeing him as their next 1C, hence the absolute meltdown.

Ah OK. I thought he was a C. That would explain why the Avs could have been interested.

He would have gotten a run there, but I'd find the situation similar to Minny and Boldy.

I would say I'd have much more confidence in Gauthier sticking as a 2C than Ritchie. Especially if we are looking at the next couple seasons.

I’ve been told it’s spelled “Pokecheck”

Absolutely no thank you to a goalie that has 2 more years at 2 million more than our current goalie, when the upside is about the same. And even if it was better, it's not 2 million and 2 more years better.
Oh no, the upside is waaaaaaay higher. But the risk he could be worse is there too.

I imagine Lumbus knows they'll have to retain something with most teams.

Like stated previously, LeBrun is the only one of the current insiders who has any sort of taps inside our organization. The others just speculate like the rest of us here.

Seravalli probably as well. I mean he managed to get CMac to come on his podcast so I feel like there's at least a connection on that front.

Incidentally, is Noah Cates a candidate for 2C or no?

Doesn't have to offense I don't think. Would be a hell of a 3C though.

I guess my point is that for me Merzlikins is a lateral move. If you can't make a proper upgrade over Georgiev, why bother. For me the only enticing options in this regard are Saros and Askarov from Nashville. Now Askarov would be more of a bet for the future, but he is very highly regarded and I would be willing to take that risk. But I don't think either of those guys is realistic.

What we do need, is someone who's capable of backing up Georgiev. His workload needs to be lightened. A guy not making more than 1,5m, if even that. I just don't know if anything like that is doable, plenty of teams are looking.

So it would seem that Byram's value around the league is higher than we here would think. Interesting
It should be high. He has potential and has kind of stalled here being behind numerous other dmen. He still young so teams will value that. Injury history is sketchy.

He easily could be used to find a younger 2C, it just depends on how badly the Avs want a longer term solution at 2C. Or if they think they can just keep putting a band aid on it.

I don't think they should trade Byram but I would do it for the right piece.

In general I agree with the idea of the upgrading. If you're locking in, you want decent upgrade. Now if you swapped George and Columbus retained a million... that has the workings of a deal IMO. Elvis is a step up from George in overall play with a higher ceiling. 1m more per season with some term wouldn't be bad.

Now this second part I partially agree with. The Avs need to be looking at backups and grabbing one. Where I differ is they don't need a just a guy to lighten his workload... they need a guy who can step in to start if George shits the bed. Say he has a series like he did against Seattle, we need a guy who can stabilize and start 3-4 games in a series if called upon. We don't need a run of the mill backup like Brossoit... we need a 1B like Allen/Mrazek/etc. Simply for the reason the Avs should not take the risk of George's issues ruining a series.

Let's get George and Elvis into a room cage match style... winner gets the net.

They absolutely need a guy who can solidify the net... they shouldn't have lost to Tampa in OT yesterday even with a depleted lineup.
Devils aren't making the playoffs without one
