I think the key with Byram is do you believe he can be what he was at certain points during that cup run on a consistent basis? If the answer is yes than you probably view him as a potential 1D. I was in that camp but have changed my mind. It certainly isn’t happening in Colorado it would appear. I’m not fully out on him but there’s some real cause for concern IMO.

I just hope the Avs continue to learn from Jost like they did with Newhook. Byram is gunna have a lot of value. I just don’t see it increasing on this team going forward. Part of me thinks if the Avs hold Byram you’ll look back in 2-3 seasons and it’ll be a massive mistake. I get why they didn’t deal him for Gauthier due to the window but that’s something that has potential to look real ugly if Byram never pops and Gauthier hits his ceiling.

I wonder could we get Shane Wright + Seattle's 1st for Byram?

It would be a risky move as there's no guarantee Wright figures it out as a legit 2C, but there's a lot of potential with him and then you get another 1st round pick that could be used to improve the team elsewhere.

I would’ve done the Gauthier trade in the offseason. But not in season if he can’t help us this year.

Gauthier or Wright doesn't help the Avs win the cup this year. They probably don't next year either, if they truly have cup aspirations.

It really is Lindholm or bust this deadline, then hope a real 2C shakes loose over the summer for their last contention year.

I dunno about that. It wouldn't be unheard of a top end college prospect to sign with his team in the playoffs and have a significant impact, just ask Cale Makar ;)

Or even Cole Caufield.

Same thing with Wright. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Wright earn a spot down the stretch and have an impact. Though neither would be the 2C solution most likely.

That being said... Let's say for example the Avs did trade Byram for Wright + 1st tomorrow... Avs could then turn around and flip that 1st + Ritchie + RyJo to Calgary for Lindholm. We'd get to keep our own 1st(Or use it somewhere else to go even more all in) and ger Lindholm still to head into the playoffs.

If we trade byram we better be all in to the max.

We would easily need an entire new bottom pairing.

Just listened to it, and flat-out said he said he didn't know this for sure. He is basing this on his opinion and rumors.
That’s the thing with Friedman. He speculates far more than most people think. Listen to the way ye words everything. A lot of “it wouldn’t surprise me if” and “many believe that” etc…

It's a hell of a dream, but forgive me if I'm not betting my money on it

If it were me and Richie + RyJo + 1st really would nab Lindholm, I'd rather just let that first be ours and keep both Byram/Girard for one more run with a proper 2C. Then this summer you trade [2X cup champion :naughty:] Byram for that future 2C.

It's crazy how much my despair or hope on this team hangs on them getting a real 2C. They get one at the deadline I'm going to become the biggest cheerleader on this board.

How much more developed is Gauthier compared to Ritchie?
Significantly… Gauthier is NHL ready today and should, at minimum, be able to step into a 2nd line wing role. We can debate his merits at center… but he’s a high end prospect and ready. There’s an outside chance he steps in and is a first line level guy.

Meanwhile Ritchie doesn’t look close to NHL ready for any top 9 role.

Many believe is somewhat credible reporting though as it alludes to sources with familiarity.

The issue with waiting on a Byram deal is his value continues to diminish if he doesn't turn his year around, and being on IR doesn't help right now either.

Also keep in mind, I don't think Ritchie + RyJo + OUR 1st gets it done for Lindholm. Given our 1st right now is about 25th overall. But Seattle's 1st instead being like 15th right now, that might be enough.

I personally think if the Avs had the chance to make a deal for something like Wright + SEA 1st between now and the deadline, they'd be silly not to do it. But I also get that keeping this Defense together for one more run could be worth it as well especially if they can solve the 2C problem. But I'm not convinced they can, without using Byram.

I can’t recall the last time Friedman broke anything Avs related… I’m sure he has, just been a while. On the big stuff he hasn’t been right in a long time. Lebrun though… that’s the guy who has Avs connections for sure. If he says it, it is probably correct.

The Aves should have made that trade but I’m also saying this now after Bo’s struggles this season

But if the Aves can turn Bo+ into Tage like being reported, I’m ok with that

If we trade byram we better be all in to the max.

We would easily need an entire new bottom pairing.

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Johnson - ????

With Malinski and Jones as your 7-8 Dmen. I'd say targeting a RD would be a good idea at that point for sure.

The forwards fwiw at that point would be:

Nuke - Mack - Mikko
Landy* - Lindholm - Lehky
Wood - Colton - Drouin
Cogs - Olofsson - LOC

With Wright and Kovalenko possibly fighting for a spot, and Kiviranta as the extra forward still.

I didn't think we were legit going to trade Byram, but when Friedland confirms it, I have to believe it.

I hope the return is good.

Definitely not the worst route to go, I'll admit.

I've been on the record saying I'd trade Byram for a rental Lindholm at this point, at least this way you get Wright to plug in after Lindholm walks. And if Wright can figure it out at center the 2C problem is solved both this year and going forward.
