McTavish was also coming off a very unique year. He played in the olympics where he had to deal with all the covid stuff, same with the world jrs in the winter. He then went onto play through an entire OHL playoff run and then the mem cup. After that he played in a late summer world jr and then came to the rookie tournament. With all that said, I doubt rest would do him much good. He played through the entire season and looked more confident as the season went on. His production may have taken a hit but he had experienced the ups and down of the season and I think hes better off for it. I doubt his calder hopes would've improved by having him sit out. He was on a team that gave up on the year by November.McTavish last year had 43 points in 80 games. Only 17 of those came in the last 40, and he was scoreless in 27 of the 40. His massive falloff in play erased his Calder hopes. Resting a couple games may well have kept them alive.
As a 17 year paying consumer, I’m fine with resting an 18 year old. It’s not like they’re resting Zegras and Terry, they’re resting a kid An 18 year old wouldn’t be playing in the NFL, and would likely be undrafted, cut, or be receiving minimal minutes in the NBA.
Also - there’s not a strict plan, and the goal is to make sure he can “be a horse in the second half of the season” - THAT is how he gets a Calder.
You may be fine with it, but theres plenty of fans that won't be.
This is the type of thing this type of management breeds. Could you imagine someone living in Columbus that's a ducks fan and pays for front row seats to see the new big star? only to have him sit in the press box. Its a shameful practice that should never be brought to the NHL. Its even more shameful for the home fans who had to watch an ECHL team play for their team for 41 games last year.
